  • Boy I wish the US would do this. I think it would be incredible to see some new Pennsy locomotives or some Rio Grande Locomotives.

  • Very nice !

  • nice video but the A4s still do it for me

  • one of the best things to come out of a shed. and by the way this may nt be the youngest steam trains in years to come, as they are plans to rebuild a clan loco (small version of a brittiania). they plan to build the last one again as there isnt a clan left in preservation

    nice vid

  • @bwarrrrk the a1 trust are looking in to building a gresley p2 so as well as seeing a clan we could see another extint class brought back to life if they go ahead with it

  • @TheSteamdriver a p2 as well :-O *faints* that i want to see if this goes ahead :-D

  • @bwarrrrk that would be interesting but if they did get the go ahead it would be a while before it's finished

  • No, Tornado is an a1 pacific, a pacific is a 4-6-2, and what is Tornado? Peppercorn was the designer, so i could have said a1 Peppercorn but there is nothing wrong with saying a1 pacific, thats just as 'right' as saying a1 Peppercorn.

  • Just a slight error in your desc, Tornado is an A1 Peppercorn, not an A1 Pacific.

  • steamvids is wright m8

  • What's this fired with? I see mention of a stoker - is it oil, wood, coal? Wonder if anyone has given thought to using a steam engine to replace the diesel engine in the diesel-electric types and if that would yield the same track horsepower as a diesel. I would absolutely love to see the steam era come back and have those in the middle east have a lot of black goo and no one that wants it.

  • Nevermind I looked it up and it is coal fired yet all the vids I've seen of it running it has like zero black smoke from the stack - someone has obviously figured out how to make coal run a lot cleaner than the old steamers.

  • Its all about technique. The fireman can make it run dirty, or clean. Black smoke is caused by too much fuel, the black is actually unburnt fuel. If the fireman is good, he can have just enough fuel going in to keep the stack clean. Another reason might be that its so cold there, the steam just covers up any black. When summer comes and it warms up, the steam will not be so prevalent.

  • @rhblakeman it's coal fired, back in the early day of trains we used coke to fire the steam engines coke is like a ground up powerdery version of coal I think if anybody knows better just say and when I say coke I don't mean the drug or drink. as oil fireing I belive you don't need a stoker/fireman for a oil fired engine again if anybody knows better just say. and the original a1s were coal fired so wouldn't she be any differant. and as far as I know us brits have NEVER coal fired a steam train

  • sweet engine! when the electric grid goes bust, this engine will be one they can use!

  • Great video and good to new steam

  • Just booked my trip - Kings Cross to York in September with my old man. Can't wait!!

  • YAY!

  • is amazing! it's like to bring to life an extinct species

  • is completely new, or rebuilt from a scrap? anyway, very nice work!

  • brand spanking new baby! the first step to maybe having a brand new one in the US too!

  • I'll second that!!

  • You are 1 very lucky person 5* well done

  • What, no power reverse, mechanical stoker (and probably no sanders), oh well, at least you all still know how to build one from scratch-Hearty congratulations from a jealous Yank! Absolutely magnificent, especially the at speed videos thru Durham!

  • She has sanders, but mechanical stokers and power reversers are the wimps way of doing it ;-)

Us brits know how to do it propably :-)

  • You all just dont know how to build a steam engine big enough to need a stoker! lol :) But seriously, thats one hell of a job guys. Very nice

  • WELL DONE GUYS! after all the years of hard work.Tornado is a true credit to you.A fine example of what can be done with true determination.

  • simply stunning

  • Great little video this, I loved every second of it, thanks for posting the video

  • u r so lucky i got a cab tour but not a cab ride when i saw her @ gcr.

  • It will be down the GCR tommorrow. (the 20th of august)

  • Can I ask why it has 2 whistles? I saw the one beside the cab, any ideas when it's being taken to the GCR?

  • Goes sometime week begining 18th. I've heard the 19th from 1 person but 20th from another so could be leaving darlington on 19th-arriving gcr 20th i don't know. The lner whistle (high picthed one) is the original (from one of the original a1's i think, and the chime is borrowed from a A4 (not sure which one). They are making a chime for her though so it will still have two- just makes her different. Could be quite confusing-you hear one whistle-she comes round the corner and you here the 2nd!!!

  • So awesome. Thanks to everyone who's putting up videos of this run, keep them coming!

  • Just plain MAGIC,,,, who would have thought this would happen 20 years ago

  • Just - beautiful. Great vid and what a subject.

  • Also a great video by the way!

  • Are there two whistles on Tornado? I see a second whistle pull but didn't know they had another one.

  • yes there is 2 whistles on Tornado, at 2mins 47 you can hear it, it located behind the smoke deflector, its off an A4, i dont know which one, the guy in orange jacket in this video owns it.

  • Thanks for capturing a historic moment. A return journey too! Every good wish to Tornado for the future - many years since I did 90 mph behind a steam loco - but I'll be there when she does.

  • Thats me driving!!!!!!!!!

  • What an honour! I think I'd be too afraid after all that work effort and money!

  • Perhaps this is a dumb question since you were only moving slowly, but how did it feel (being a completely new loco that is)?

  • everything is tight on it, at 1min 31 you can hear a judder as the reverser is wound into forward gear, it rides supurbly because of the roller bearings fitted, it also make a strange groaning sound because everything its tight ie motion etc, also the loco when its moved has a strange newish smell, its difficult to describe really what kind of smell it is, bit like a new car really.
