My dear fellow, the British National Anthem was played in the occasion of the New Year's Eve concert in Lucca (Italy) and it was not expected nor announced in the programme. It was my choice (as concuductor) to perform it as "official end of the concert" as my personal gift to a Nation I personally like very much. But the audience was almost completely Italian so no mystery nobody was standing...Furthermore nobody expected the Anthem to be played, so...

@PUCCINIMUSICK I understand the point you are trying to make....but...are you telling me that because they are Italian they don't recognize the British anthem? I suppose that's possible, but it would surprise me. It would not surprise me that most Americans and most British would not recognize the Italian anthem, but I would think most Europeans would recognize the tune...

@PUCCINIMUSICK However, I'm quite sure that if an announcement had been made, informing them that your national anthem was about to be played, surely they would have stood. Therefore I am happy to give them the benefit of the doubt. If you were to tell me that indeed they did recognize it as the UK anthem and still saw no reason to stand, I would be rather put off.

Unfortunately not quite true. We still have Dukes, Marquesses, Earls, Viscounts, Barons, Baronets, then several ranks of knighthood. Theses titled persons still own one third of the land in the United Kingdom, including huge areas of London (the Duke of Westminster most of the West End, the Duke of Bedford Russell Square etc, Earl Cadogan Sloane Square, Duke of Cornwall aka The Prince of Wales Oval Cricket Ground and most of Kennington). The list goes on.....would you like more?

ds1868 - lol, yes we have ranks of aristocracy still but they mean absolutely nothing. A few have inherited great wealth - so what? Most of them haven't. If you work hard and have talent anyone can succeed in Britain. Those that claim that they are at a disadvantage because they come from a working class background are losers.
