I was shociked when I head Iowa beat NY to marriage. Hopefully, and I feel we will win it here, NY will keep up our progressive streak with being state number 6 to allow marriage and the 2nd (?) to do so without judicial intervention! My fingers are crossed!
I am going to school here in Iowa and was never prouder of my temporary home state as the day I read that ruling. I sat up almost all night online with two of my best friends, a gay couple who live near SF, watching the votes come in on Prop 8 and we were all devastated it passed. Iowa's Supreme Court decision to allow gay marriage after prop 8 passed in CA was a little surprising but Iowa does tend to be surprisingly progressive, love it! Take care, we'll all get there, hopefully soon!
Was there for a whole year as an exchange student from Germany. Had my coming out there ... I was scared & quite unsure how it would end up. Afterall it is rather a rural state. But I was wrong! Luckily! My host family & the people I told were very supportive. Thank you so much for your support everyone and your openness.
I AM SOOOO PROUD OF YOU ALL AND IOWA.
THANK YOU
P.S. Underlines Iowa's very impressive and progressive history. :) Hope Germany will also get there soon.
Iowa has been way, way ahead of both U.S. and California both during statehood and before as a territory, when deciding on issues of equal protection. It is somewhat worrisome how history suggests we may again have a long, long wait ahead of us before California and U.S. catch up to Iowa on this issue as well.
Iowa's miscegination law lasted for 13 years, and was repealed in 1851. California's miscegenation law began in 1850 and lasted nearly 100 years.
Keep your head up, CA will eventually come to its senses and ensure that all families are equal. Families like yours are in my thoughts and I wish you the best.
Hi from up north in Canada, where legal gay marriage has been the law for over 3 years from the Atlantic to the Pacific.
I found myself in New York City the day Prop 8 did not get repealed and was in the rally starting on Christopher St and 7th Avenue. We are all supporting you to make this a better world. Let's start with our continent and then the rest of the world!
Every state will get there soon and I can't wait for the day when that come and this nation will live out the true meaning of its greed. That all humans are created equal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is for depfox, there are some haters and angry people out there who will say all kind of bad things about you and your family. For example God will this and that, and that you are this and that. Don't listen to them and I hope you don't l'et that border you. Keep being the best person you can be for your family and for others out there and enjoy your life.
Im sory that you think of gay people in the same sense. I am a gay Cristian who is raising a family with love and with pride. I come from a Catholic family with values and the understanding that with God's help all things are posible. I think people need to remove there glases and see the truth where it lies. The little girl who was just taken and killed her in Ca was by a priest who happend to be in suport of the ban on gay marriages here. I wonder what gods opinions are on that?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
We know what God's opinion about homosexuality - God hates that kind of sex which is against the nature, and you will bring a curse on you and your "family".

please go to fuck off to ur fucking church and ask ur god to fuck ur arse imbecille!!!! i am sure u will be a better person with ur arse fucked by fucking god!!!!
To logically follow your argument here: you would otherwise be OK with gay marriage as long as you had some assurance that it would not lead to marriage rights for pedophiles and people into necrophilia?
If that is the case, why don't you just leave gay marriage alone and put your time and energy into lobbing against pedophile and necrophilia marriage?
Oh, never mind. I just realized they're too busy keeping gays from getting married and protecting fetuses. Surely they can't be bothered with annoying things like the fact that 1 in 5 American children living in poverty.
California here...I'm so happy for gay people everywhere. I'm a little embarrassed that Iowa could enact such forward thinking legislation but my own state - one of the presumably most liberal states in the land, could not. Thanks for being a shining beacon for humanity. You are not just Human Beings you're Humans Doing . -- ANT
never understood the ban on gay marriage, I mean doesn't it only hurt marriage to not allow honest loving people the right to be married? It makes it into something that discriminates, and that hurts marriage. Marriage is about love, not what bigots define as love. Great video though!!! :)
Obviously, you did not read the decision of the court, or you do not comprehend simple English.
The Supreme Court of Iowa struck down a law that was UNCONSTITUTIONAL. They did not "violate the constitutions[sic] in the process". They spelled it all out in their decision, with references to the CONSTITUTION that provided them with their reason for the verdict.
Until you read the decision, and understand it, you are doing nothing but bloviating bigoted nonsense.
I'm from Iowa and I'm a heterosexual who didn't get ANYTHING stolen from them. I get to see so many of my friends happy. Also I think you underestimate the support that gay and lesbian couples have here in Iowa. Let the people live their lives go find something better to do for yourself.
The thing here is.......They compare themselves to the Jews in WWll or the Blacks during Civil War, but deep down it's them wanting us to accept their sexual deviousness......what's next? Dogs? Donkeys? God will get us for allowing this......He didn't destroy Soddom and Gamhorah for it's love to other people. Loving one another is fine but this is downright abominable. God Have mercy On Us
The fact of the matter is that the Supreme Court did not make a new law. They struck down an unconstitutional law that was added in 1998. Read the decision of the court. They spelled it out and gave references to where they got their information, what the judicial branches duties are, and how they reached their verdict. It's written so that even bigots can understand it if they think REAL hard.
derrike 50, comparing two people of the same sex who want to marry to farm animals is beyond ignorance. Try becoming a member of the human race and loving God's creations.
I'm not from a country who alows people to marry the people they love, in Portugal unfortaly we can't marry, gay people doesn't have that right yet, but I so happy that this kind of news that you can't imagine, and I'll be more happy when in California you can finanlly have again your rights. Love you all my friends, please continue to make this wonderful videos, because you are an inspirantion to all.
We're happy of course about the Iowa Supreme Court ruling. But, we want to share the happiness. When you and everyone in this country can marry the one they love, we can then truly celebrate.
Discrimination corrupts children, not honesty and love. Funny how gay marriage, or homosexuality in general brings out so many weak minded individuals. You have to be so insecure in the first place to believe homosexuality affects you, or that gay relationships/marriage affects straight marriages.
A victory indeed!! It sends a message loud and clear coming from a smaller State like Iowa to the other States across the country. I think there are some people who expected Marriage Equality to be accepted in California, New York, maybe Florida and not the other States. Kudos to the people of Iowa!
