and Cuba's health care system is NOT great. They face severe shortages on pharmaceuticals and medical machines. Cubans are often seen begging outside pharmacies for tourists (which are fully stocked) and the country has experienced outbreaks of previously eradicated diseases like scabies and TB.

Education is free, but students of all ages are required to attend military training and labor camps. So they're not exactly "free."

what blockade? the U.S. transacted $710 million with Cuba in 2008, and has transacted more than $2 BILLION worth of business with Cuba in the last eight years. Currently the U.S. is Cuba's biggest food supplier and 4th biggest import partner. The U.S. has been Cuba's biggest donor of humanitarian aid including medicine and medical supplies for decades..Want to help the Cuban people? get rid of Castro.

Check out the Torricelli Act (1992). US trade is restricted to a narrow range of goods, which must be paid for in cash. Cuba can't access credit from the IMF etc because they're US-controlled. Maritime navigation controls prevent any vessel visiting Cuba from going to the US for 90 days afterwards. Cuba can't use US dollars in international trade. They can't buy goods (eg medical equipment) with US components.

Cuba DID offer compensation for US assets, in the form of 20-year bonds paying a reasonable coupon.  However, since the US government was hellbent on destroying the Revoultion even before Fidel appealed to the USSR for support, the offer was abruptly declined by the US government (acting "on behalf" of the asset-holders).
