You would be gutted if you need a pee just before takeoff, having to wait all that time. The other benefit is for pre-mature ejaculators who will be able to successfully join the mile high club and still finish in time for the in-flight meal :-).
"Ladies and gentlemen, please fasten your seatbelts as we are preparing for take off..." (30 secs later) "We have reached cruising altitude, you can now remove your seatbelts, I will start throwing oreos..." (30 secs later) "Ladies and gentlemen we are now preparing for landing, please fasten your seatbelts once again..."
@dipu94321 This flight is just one leg of a journey that takes a circular route around the Orkney Islands, then repeats it in the opposite direction. It joins all the islands (with airstrips) to Kirkwall just so happens that two of them are only a mile or so apart.
And yes, the sea in this area is often extremely rough as well as tidal flows faster than many boats.
@dipu94321 If you had half a brain cell, you would have noticed this flight is between islands. And air travel is a lifeline for islanders, and you can't take a boat because the sea currents are so bad aroubd there that you might wash up in Fiji.
Hey, if nothing else, this is one route where you're guaranteed to not get on board, taxi, then park and wait out a ground stop due to the weather at the destination.
This flight probably costs about 8 US Dollars, 10 if you would like an oreo and a canned soda for the flight. could you imagine being a pilot flying this route trying to log 1000 hours for your full commercial pilots liscence -.-
This is the long-haul version of the flight as the pilot has to fly around the airport. Watch the vid with the alternative route starting and landing on the opposite ends of the runway! It's even shorter.
No, it's definately a BN-2B-26, G-BLNJ to be specific. Even without the video I'd recognise the sound of the twin Lycoming engines! A plane spotter? No, let's just say decades of family involvement in this service...
Nice. My Great Grandfather had a farm on South Ronaldsay Island in Widewall. We visited there once. Took the ferry from John O Groats to Stromness. Very nice place, Orkney. I would like to play some midnight golf just once....
I doubt flying an Islander for 2 minutes is going to starve the world of fuel.
Also, people who need to go between the two islands have no other way except plane or boat, but a plane is needed when the weather is too bad for a ferry to cross. People need to live, food etc gets transported on the plane, so I've heard, so do you judge people food just to save a drip of fuel?
i've flown many times on the Islander and it's the only plane I'd ever trust. just listen to that twin thrum at 55 seconds, and see the way the pilot can control everything so (apparently) effortlessly. i was on the plane from Stronsay in 1995 when one of the engines failed just after take off and the wee plane got a full load of weel fed folk safely back to Kirkwall. Respect Davie Miller.
I luv loganair, they are probably the most unique british airline, they are owned by BA=funding and they operate Twin Otters from a beach daily (only one in the world) , do the shortest flight in Islanders, and also Link all the main cities of scotland together fairly impressive
i live here on westray, (the neighbouring island to papay) and it is absolutely POINTLESS getting a bridge when u can quite easily take a boat journey, or plaine crossing that takes all of 5 minutes!
Orkney (not 'it') is in Scotland, but doesn't 'belong' to the mainland. I know my facts, peedie man, because I live here in Orkney, not middle England. Just like Staffordshire is different to, say, the Isle of Man; Orkney & Shetland are different to Scotland, the Mainland. That's what I meant.

even better, build a bridge between the two islands. Or a tunnel. Put a $50 toll to make up for airplane. You'll still earn about the same or maybe more.
there aren't enough people living on the two islands to justify the huge expense of a bridge and if there were - no one would pay $50 (£25) when the flight between the two currently costs about half that
