I loved Myst I-IV and could never play Uru or Myst V because these games kept crashing up on me right in the beginning.
Now that I had the chance to watch URU here on YT - and thanks for the upload - I'm no longer sad. It looks kind of boring, I didn't understand half of what was going on.
And besides, it looks like they recycled lots of graphics and puzzles from previous games.
Uru was fantastic, especially if you were lucky enough to play it online.
Unfortunately, resolution wasn't high enough to be able to read a lot of the material, and scomarty didn't explain a lot of what was going on. It's far from boring, IMO, but I can understand being a little lost if you don't already know what's going on.
Nothing was recycled from previous games as far as I'm aware.
I guess that's the reason why I prefer commentary Let's Plays. They give you a lot more information on things you aren't aware of when you never played the game you're watching .-)
Plus the playing character was absolutely needless. Although it added at least a tiny bit of fun to see him transparent or disappear randomly. They should have stuck to the first person gameplay. Didn't they because URU was supposed to become big on the web (which it never did)?
Uru was intended for online play, yes. Ubisoft cancelled the first launch before it even happened. Fans set up their own "shards" to play on, later supported by an official Cyan shard. Then Gametap picked up Uru, and it finally officially opened.
It lasted about a year on Gametap before Gametap decided to cancel.
Now Cyan's working on other things, like Myst on the iPhone. But they intend to open-source the client and server code, at the very least. Uru could become the first open-source MMO.

Scomarty,
Thank you very much for posting this game walkthrough. There were two puzzles that I couldn't get no matter what I read through and traversed.
Having commentary would've been awesome. Maybe next time :)
Thanks again!!!

Were they the creatures from Myst V?

Yes, those are the Bahro, who you see throughout Myst V. Myst V was more of a sequel to Uru than a continuation of Myst I-IV.
