I dont get how getting ON mars is possible with the giant storms,sand storms, and the temp being -100 degree's. This is great, but not realistic. At the closest point it takes 6 months to travel to mars. Mars is only this close ones within 26 months. If we want a small base or a solid place to operate, we should already work on it very hard from now on, and leave in 2012, so we can have something decent in 2036 or so. Stay with both your feet on the ground people!

It's such a deluded dream. If they can build a big glass dome, why not do it on earth to protect cities from upcoming catastrophes? The cost of flying a single person to Mars is more than most people will earn in their lifetimes. If we can't look after a ready-made biosphere, WHAT ON EARTH chance do we have to create it from scratch? Excuse the pun.

I dont get how getting ON mars is possible with the giant storms,sand storms, and the temp being -100 degree's. Getting a space station for mars orbit, or getting to mar's moon is far more likely, because there is no storms, and the temperchure is -0 to -5 degree's which is much more easy to prepair for.

We are centuries away from having the technology to do any of that. Until then, there is no viable reason to attempt travel to Mars. "Because it's there" isn't sufficient reason when we have so many monumental problems on THIS planet. It's just another dead rock in space. Maybe we should figure out how to take care of this planet before we try our luck with another? Not only should we not send people Mars, but we should stop sending probes. The resources are need here.

im guessing because of lower gravity their children will be taller but weaker since there is not too much pressure on the mussles. also more blood will go towards the brain during the day so they will probably become smarter.. just a guess though and since most of their foods and exercise and everything will be healthy and perfect there is a very likely chance they will become more smarter than common humans. just have to see what effect the difference in magnetic field and radiation will have

We will travel into space only IF we live that long. We are using up everything. We have to learn to be self-sufficient. How will you live on Mars if you use up everything? You can't keep getting supplies from home to populate the galaxy. Are you going to turn the earth into a green house? Are you going to grow all the food on it? What happens if the earth is destroyed? Silly people. If we only learn to use what is here efficiently. We will have everything we need for as long as we need it.

@johnnnyreb51 Dont be so nihilistic. Human have only harvested about a tenth of a percent of the resources on Earth. We produce so much food that nearly 30% of it is thrown away. Yes we do use alot of resources but not that much. You must be referring to fossil fuels. Well that wont be much longer. An automated base on Luna can easily harvest vast quantities of Helium-3 which CERN states is a much more viable fuel for fusion reactions. But wed still use oil to produce plastics.

Oh and I forgot to mention... we dont need 5 elements, we only need 3. They are: water, electricity and metal. Water for drinking and bathing. Electricity for light and power. Metal for shelter. If we want to TERRAFORM(note the emphasis on terraform) mars then we need 5 elements, and belive me when I tell you that terraforming is a tedious task.

@RedGyser No, Mars needs global warming. You are thinking about venus. Mars was most likely hit by a planet killing asteroid or something that knocked its atmosphere off, which any planet is vulnerable to.
More reason to colonize Mars really. It's death just shows the mortality of Earth as well. We should master the tech to go to any heavenly body for self defense, and colonize another world for a backup.

This is great, but not realistic. At the closest point it takes 6 months to travel to mars. Mars is only this close ones within 26 months. If we want a small base or a solid place to operate, we should already work on it very hard from now on, and leave in 2012, so we can have something decent in 2036 or so. Stay with both your feet on the ground people!
