I just bought an '87, $700. You guys who know a lot about these Turbo Coupes, please send me some info. It only seemed to be doing about 5 psi boost, but it wouldn't really pull past 4500 rpm (air filter plugged bad, it was 1* outside, the car had been sitting for months). How do you adjust or fix this stuff?
Hey i just picked a TC up for 500 as well and mine was doing the same thing.... cut the cat off!! TRUST ME IF THAT THING IS CLOGGED IT WILL BE NIGHT AND DAY WHEN YOU TAKE THAT SUCKER OFF.. best of luck
I know nothing about these cars, but there's one for sale locally and got interested. How do you change the boost pressure? Sounds simple to run 14s, how about 13s?
@gumper1986 If it's a good running 87-88 5 spd all it will take is a cone filter 17 psi boost and an open exhaust. it ran 14.80@91 with a good launch 2.0 60 ft on street tires.

i love t-birds there the best. yours is fast. ive got an 85' 302 and a 67'with a 390 love them both to death. shows how ford has always been forward thinking. just look at the later model sc birds...smokkin
The problem I see is that after about 13 psi, all you are doing is heating up the air. Plus the stock IHI is not very happy with anything past 15 psi for sustained periods of time. The compressor wheel likes to explode... it's just a matter of when. I keep mine at 13 in the interests of reliability, but an older T3 in a large ratio can do 15 psi all day long, and will be more effective at higher boost levels up to 25 psi. Plus the air will be denser, and allow for more power. Good job anyway!!!
You have fun with your 13 psi. I know for a fact that the IHI is good for much more boost. It made more power on 20 psi than it did on 17 psi and it still had the stock intercooler. 15 psi is stock! My IHI was at almost 200k miles and working perfect when I took it off. Almost 100k of that was when it was running 20 psi. At 13 psi you would be very lucky to break into the 16.s with a bunch of other mods. You won't scatter a compressor wheel on an IHI even if you wire the waste gate shut.
thats not bad for a stock motor at 3700 lbs on the car. im getting ready to drop a 2.3t outta a TC in my 2300 lb ranger. this gives me a good estimate at what mine will run
@boostbird Whats so funny is i had an 88 Turbo coupe (stock) and i raced my buddys impala and spanked him. Then one day i was playing with buttons and stuff and turned my primium button off. I had no idea that lowered my boost. Then he was beating me and laughing at me. Then i started looking at my boost gauge and noticed it was only going to 9 instead of 15. then i flipped it back to primium and all was right in the world.
Thanks for the good words. The exhaust was just an open 3" downpipe nothing more. There is no way you can make an 8-1 compression turbo motor of any kind have that fart can sound.
i got a 3.8 V6 my cousins getting my grandmas old 88 he thniks it will beat my 350 big block cutlass stock, lol i read this,
"Stock IHI turbo, ported stock exhaust manifold and intake manifold. .450 220/218 cam, stock head 3" open downpipe ,cold air intake, stock intercooler. It just took a bunch of messing with mostly stock stuff 20 psi boost and some extra fuel pressure. It was not easy"
true those motors arnt bad but unless you do something like that your a 16secer,my cutlass stocks 13.7
First of all, a 350 is a small block, not a big block. Second of all, what year is your Cutlass? Unless it's a '70 Cutlass with the 300hp 350 and a 4 speed and sticky tires and a few extra mods, it won't come close to 13.7. I'm guessing you have a mid to late '70s or '80s Cutlass 350, which will be hard pressed to break 16.5 in the 1/4 mile.

@boostbird How did you up the boost on it? I have an 86 SVO an recently installed a front mounted intercooler but I need more boost to get better performance. I am new with the turbocharging scene.....

It had many stock parts but no it was nowhere near a stock car. these cars ran in the mid to low 16 second range bone stock.

So this car is completely stock?

Damn, what mods did you have to get it to run 13's? I'm looking to get an 88 TC, it has the t3, increased boost, CAI, and 3 inch turbo back.
I thought these things ran 16's stock.
