If you want to get this look right, use pomade, wax, brylcreem, vaseline or something similar that was used back in the day. Gel will give you helmet hair.

@999charlieboy No, you're not, I finaly started doing my hair like this some weeks ago, also with Brylcreem, but sometimes I think I'll try some pomade and vaseline, Brylcreem sometimes doesn't hold that strong. This look should come back into fashion, most men's hair looks like shit.

I've admired this hair style ever since MadMen started. so, Decided I needed a more grown up haircut, so got rid of the bedhead look I had since the 90s - got it off the ears, cleared the neck, and got it parted on the side for the first time ever . But I'm not into gel as it makes hair hard like it's plastic - instead, my barber recommended I use original brylcreem. It works fantastic and keeps my hair soft, pliable, shiny and wet looking all day. A little greasy, but love the look.

It's been in Esquire and GQ magazine loads as the cool hairstyle for men plus it's all over the catwalks. Whether the average Joe in the street is going to take to it is another matter... but maybe that's part of the appeal of this look the 2nd time round?

@hummiemd tell the barber tight on the sides, long on top. I have the same style hair and I go to my barbers twice a month to keep it that way. Also, they mentioned that they use gel. Gel is ok but doesn't usually give a nice shine. For Mad Men they used "Big Sexy" brand gel/spray/whatever the hell it is. I use Murphys Pomade (aka grease) and it shines and holds for a couple days.
