I first heard this played on British Forces radio in Egypt in 1954. 3 Inf Div and 615 S.M.P.S. A magic moment when the music cut through the heat heavy desert air. Sublime echoes of Bach.
This saxophone blends well with the trumpet ... it is maybe slower around that horn and so the player focuses more on tone and dare I say ... interesting ideas and ways through the chords ... the style that Chet claimed as his own. Too much jazz is based upon the faster / louder / higher / sequence and valve technique school school ... an art in itself no doubt BUT at some point the listener tires of individual virtuosity and wants to 'get into the music'
When Gerry Mulligan takes over in My Old Flame-He takes you to the very place where memories are made.If you cant 'get into' Carson City Stage YOU HAVE NO EAR FOR JAZZ!!
I love this version (slower than on "Live in California"). Gerry and Chet had complimentary styles. Feel free to post as many early "Gerry Mulligan Quartet" pieces as you wish. I'm a big fan. Thanks again for the post!
Why use piano when we've the skills of Baker and Mulligan?
