I tend to view that concept from a musical view point, naturally....and I'm sure John does too....hence rhythm. David Lynch certainly works in this kind of way with his films....many great film makers do.
@CannibalDeathPit You're exactly right. Rhythm in a film means the pace of the editing and how long the cuts take. In Halloween, John is saying that there is no consistency in the editing, or rhythm.
6:56 - 7:05 Pauline Kael, who called Dirty Harry a 'right-wing fantasy', which is nonsense, and Night of the Hunter 'one of the most frightening movies ever made.'
don's role as loomis really did make the movie. as the movie goes on don's explaination of him made it. don's treactions hroughout all the movies show through his fustractions showed how bad michael myers was. I notice as I got into this series don's role made it.
movies cannot be revolutionized much more at all. he did that with this movie. from a person who is a new film maker just beginning in the horror genre you realize how this movie was perfect in evert aspect.
If you like John Carpenter's scores check out my channel. I made a concept record that involves deconstructing Carpenter's scores and remixing Lil Waynes tracks with the deconstructed scores. It is super dark and heavy.
@TomFromJersey It almost looks like he's removing coveralls. The video might have started with him in costume as The Shape, and he's already removed the mask when this clip starts. So with that missing (if that's the case), the rest is out of context and looks strange.
Carpenters villian is masterfuly written, in anyone elses hands he would look clumsy and awkward and predictable but Myers gradually becomes so mad he ceases to become human. It's genuis concept and the closet re-birth scene where Myers suddenly rises up, tells you everything you need to know about Michael Myers.
Nothing will touch the original Halloween - come to think of it, even the first sequel, Halloween II - is better than most so-called "horror" movies of today.
Much of the audience effect of Halloween was that it was 1978, it isn't as scary now. I'm a huge fan but what I love is the effect of music to create mood and his use of the steadycam or glidecam which really brought the viewer into the actual scene.
It is a classic in so many respects. Often imitated, never close to duplicated.
@717mienbao I agree, it aint as scary now coz film trends have moved on but unfortunatley gotten worse. JC somhow came up with all the music for the film by himself which i just cant figre out. There were loads of POV shots used (Inspired by Black Christmas), the cameras where on a dollytrack and theres a mistake wher Lynda actually trips over it as she and bob are leaving for the bedroom and sealing ther doom.
He didn't overdo the supernatural aspect. At various points things occur that make you think this guy is somewhat superhuman, but somehow we can reflect & attribute them to pent up rage & anger overcoming what should be intolerable pain. Only at the end, when he gets shot 6 times, falls off the balcony, then gets up & runs off, does it become glaringly apparent. If Carpenter had established that superhuman trend early & continued with it indiscriminately the film would've been FAR less effective
I spent 8 years trying to reach him, and another 7 trying to keep him locked up. Because i realized, what was living behind that boys eyes, was purely and simply....evil.
I saw this in a theatre when it first came out and people really were screaming and yelling at the screen. One of the best movie-going experiences of my life. Alien is the only other one I can think of that got this kind of huge audience reaction.
@Yip3kiyayMotherFuker Oh you know, when she's limping towards her house, knocking on the door and you know the killer is getting closer and the kid looks out the window, yawning and totally bored and moves slowly to let her in. People are yelling, "Open the door! Ahhh! Open the door!" Or just screaming whenever anything unexpected happened. Never went to Halloween 2 though; sequels are disappointing about 98% of the time. Hard to recreate that now though; too many previews gives things away.
@chomsky88 I know. It unbelivable how much film gets worse as time goes on. You wer lucky to be there. Were you scared going home as they left it open ended
mindstormsabrewin.... Shut the hell up please. The remake was made to get away from John Carpenter-ness and change the way Halloween was. Rob wanted a "totally different experience" and he did that with Halloween. Don't bad mouth the movie because i love it
The remake of Halloween was awful because Myers' origins were OVER explained. The took away all the mystery of that guy buy turning him onto yet another abused kid who snaps. It's too easy and simplistic. The original film was mysterious and dreamlike. It was the first film to make the "perfect" suburbs a menacing place. The camera shots of the houses and streets alone carried a sense of dread and uncertainty. A brilliant film from a brilliant mind.
John Carpent is one those director's who will always make his own movies, he doesnt care about hollywood's rules he makes them for him and his fanbase. He knows who will watch and wanna see his movies
I'm always so pleased when Mark Kermode gets to interview someone.
He knows his stuff, asks good, probing questions, and is respectful to the artist without being a kiss-ass like that irritating prick from the actor's studio.
I wish AFI would silute him as directior, he deserves I mean he doesnt play by hollywood's rules when it come to his movies he makes them for him and does it the way he wants
John Carpenter one of the greatest American filmmakers big movies like fog escaping new york halloween and his masterpiece the thing unlike spielberg carpenter makes no concessions in his films his movies is real dark and not as stupid movies like et
Now days that deal he got for Halloween , he got the final and the other two guys had no final or creative input, Now days it would not happen, in horror every body wants to be a part of it,
Scream Queen is still being used in today. Jamie Lee Curtis also starred in Terror Train and Prom Night both released when the slasher genre is in its heyday.

This, The Thing & The Fog are three of the best films ever made, they don't age at all.
