@RonaldBarone Yes, she was a mezzo. I really recommend her Anna Bolena duet with Callas, where she sings Giovanna Seymour, if you haven't listened to it.

4 >> Interviewer: "a particular memory, I don't know ? When have you seen her for the very last time? "
Giulietta Simionato: "The last time I saw her was when she was here in Rome to go filming [Medea] with Pasolini: both at the arrival and departure we were together 2-3 hours at the Grand Hotel, talking and talking, and mostly she talked herself, and she told me everything as ever because she confided in me, and she accepted everythin from me: advice, reproach, complements... >>
Interviewer: "A great soprano like Giulietta Simionato is still moved after having learned the news of MariaCallas's disapperance (death). Were you very close friends?"
Giulietta Simionato: "First of all, I have to clarify that saying I am moved is too little: I am broken-hearted. And I really struggle (I am very emotional ) to retain my tears, but ... I have to say a few words to remember Maria and I could have expected anything today but being here inthis very moment >>

From what I understood Simionato said: "I met Callas in the 40's in Venice where she sang Tristan and Isolde. I knew her well. She was a fragile woman despite the image of a lioness or tigress. The last time I saw her was in Rome when she was doing a production for Pasolini (must refer to the movie version of Medea). Callas, Simionato, Tebaldi, Nilsson, Sills, Pavoratti. There are no good singers on earth anymore!!!
She said that Callas was a musical phenomenon and that she knew her well, contrary to popular belief. That's all I understood. Italian is a beautiful language, I love how it sounds!
RIP, Maria Callas and Giulietta Simionato. God rest your souls.
See... thats how a elegant woman talks about another colleague ... Giulietta Simionato is sad, down, but still someone with class and respect for someone she admired ....
Giulietta Simionato I like you, but after this you really won my full respect
Thank you so much, Onegin, for this treasure. I know Italian and I understood without problems what Giulietta said on Maria, she was undoubtedly on the edge of tears. Giulietta is so sweet, I admire her now even more than I did before, both as an artist (just to think about her Azucena and Ulrica!), and as a woman!
§1. (...)To say I am moved [by the death of Maria] is very little. I am broken-hearted. I try hard to hold back my tears!
Maria is not there. It is a nightmare. We met when she was doing Isolde and I my first Mignon. Then she did Puritani causing [the world] to call her vocal and musical phenomenon ...which she Was as everybody knows. We loved and appreciated one another against the disbelief of the envious who maintained she couldn't be friends with anyone... I knew her really well.
§2. She was a vulnerable woman. And yet an element in her character could make her look like a lioness or a tiger, as they said. A woman of formidable personality who had indeed something new to say in Opera! What else shall one say. One can talk infinitely about Maria. (...) The last time we met was when came to Rome for her Pasolini Film. We spoke for hours at the hotel. She spoke mostly because she always confided in me. She also accepted everything from me: advise, critic, compliments...
§3. She called me "unique". I asked "unique" in what sense!? She responded, "In so many ways! You are the only person who understands me, who is close to me and does so much good to my heart!"
I wish this clip contained English captions for what Ms. Simionato talked in the interview. With no knowledge of Italian, I was unable to comprehend what she said there.
Many thanks.I remember the BBC News TV announcement.Victoria de los Angeles was 'phoned at her Barcelona home by a reporter from Paris in the afternoon."Madam de los Angeles,Callas is dead. What do you have to say?"He heard a gasp, followed by sobbing and her 'phone fell to the floor.Later she replaced the handset without speaking.
Actually it's Cossotto which was cruel for the poor Callas faint in Norma at Paris Opera in 1965. But there has never been rivalry between Callas and Cossotto and even less with Simionato which was a great friend since the beginning.
Grazie ancora.
Oh...Onegin, you sent this in. Duh! Sorry, I didn't even look to see. Thank you so much for this treat. It's wonderful to hear Simionato speaking with affection on her friendship with Callas. Two great artists who gave us great performances.

Giulietta Simionato and La Divina were not good friends!
She always tried to outsing Callas.
Her notes were stronger, although Callas never made a battle with her.
