@ANinja11 Correct. According to an issue of Japanese magazine Gamest, this 1984 arcade fighting game was Data East's largest objection against Capcom in court about the 1993 Fighter's History arcade. Data East said Karate Champ was the true originator of the competitive fighting game genre, which predated the original Street Fighter (1987) by three years.
This is a really great game in so many ways. If you have ever taken martial arts its about as close as you can get to the feel with it still being a game.
The best fighting game EVER. True martial artist's appreciated the way you had to craft a point using technique and timing. Not just battering random button to make people fire lightning out of their arses or whatever!!!!!
In court between Data East and Capcom about Fighter's History, Data East's largest complaint against Capcom was that their 1984 Karate Champ arcade was the one that started it all in popularizing the fighting game genre. It later caused Konami to create the 1985 Yie Ar Kung-Fu arcade, which is the basis for modern fighting games. In 1987, Capcom created Street Fighter 1, which is like Yie Ar Kung-Fu on crack, with Ryu and Ken resembling Karate Champ's white and red karate men.
@Stimchi It also appeared in Ferris Bueller's Day Off, along with a sound effect of Pac-Man dying without the Pac-Man arcade being seen, and another that's probably the 1983 Mario Bros.
i used to play this on the NES before street fighter 2 came out and made believe that the guy in red was ken and the guy in white was ryu. i also loved making fun of the referee (he needed a haircut).
the trick as far as i could figure was to keep blocking until the other guy did a move you knew the response to, like if he did a high punch you could block and then do a foot sweep.
both games are corrected cited as primary influences on the entire modern fighting genre. sega however produced a combo-control style duel fighting game in '75 called heavyweight champ, which likely influenced Data East with Karate Champ & Shanghai Kid, which both influenced Yie Ar Kung Fu. This would be the last popular duel-type fighting game until SF, as 85-89 saw the arcades dominated by side-scrolling fighters (i.e. double dragon) and the cresting popularity of motor racing games
...what he said is prolly true. But then again [im a SF fanboy, so no disrespect intended]most of the "original" characters in SF2' were inspired by movies, pro atheletes, and characters from FIST OF THE NORTH STAR manga series. If you read FOTNS youll see it, alot. Mostly from the ancellary badguys who are about to get owned, fatality style.
Yes this game is more inspired by traditional martial art customs then anime, manga, cinema or celebrities. No inspiration aesthetic-wise but this established the control style. Although they both bear Mas Oyama inspired characters like almost any fighter with Japanese style martial art characters.
This is a great game! I remember playing it back in the day and being able to spend up to an hour on a single quarter. The trick is to time your front kick just right. That was my super simple default move that got me out of a lot of trouble.
it will be very nise if they do it in 3D! with the same basic muves in game pad's sticks of the consoles!!And mybe to add some ather muves in the buton's. wat to you think guys?
I've never seen is version anywhere.
