He wanted to make a game that made people feel the same way he felt listening to the song.

Except songs with English words are common in Japan.

The dumb thing is that The Mother OST had half of the songs in English, yet it was a Japan only soundtrack. And there are absolutely no songs with Japanese words in them in the entire soundtrack, meaning half of the songs were English, and the other half were instrumental only.

It's because everything in MOTHER was meticulously conceived by the great master Shigesato Itoi to be extremely touching. The emotionally deep plot and the way the player identifies himself with the main character(s) result in the inexplicable feelings of "want to cry / strangely love / fragility / emptiness" that permeate anyone who's played (and finished) Earthbound.
