No problem going down even with 2WD. Just make sure to take the main road starting from the top, instead of a smaller spur that begins slightly to the north. You can check it all out ahead of time using Google Earth.
The first 3 miles going down are steep. Your Forester, lacking low range gearing, is going to pick up alot of speed unless you ride the brakes - so stop when you can every 1/4 mile or so to let the brakes cool a bit. This way you can really enjoy the awesome views, too!
I'm thinking about taking this road down to bishop in a AWD subaru forester this summer (2010). Shouldn't be a problem right?
