Also, for those of you asking about what the Museum's plans are for the 1201...no one knows. She is hidden in the back of the restoration shop behind the museum. I have a terrible feeling that we won't see her return to service as there was a notice on the Daily Commercial News about proposed plans for the museum to build a 50 million dollar expo hall for the excess inventory of artifacts (e.g. 1201).
This marvelous machine was converted from coal to oil during her rebuild in the 1970's. I recall riding in a heavyweight coach pulled by this classy engine in 1981 from Ottawa to North Bay, at speeds up to 110 km/h. An unforgettable trip.
Thanks for that input.. you know more about her than I do. I just wish there was money to re-furbish whatever is needed to have her back out running again ! There can't be that much wrong to be re-certified again, but I don't know. She sure seemed like a horse that loved to run !
The pleasure is mine. This engine is owned by a museum in Ottawa ( the federal government ) and the last rebuild around 1991 was mysteriously halted after most of the work was completed. Fortunately, she has always been stored indoors, so there is hope.
No these excursions were carried out by the Museum of Science and Technology in Ottawa. Most passenger cars used in these excursions and the main ones from the museum up to wakefield, PQ (same line the Hull Chelsea Wakefield 909 excursions run today) belonged to The Bytown Railway Society (see Branchline).
The VIA cars were rented out to Bytown directly from VIA Rail for each particular excursion (depending on ticket sales, etc).
Thanks for the comments and information. I can't confirm that they were running her with oil or not, at the time. As far as I know, she's back under wraps at the museum of Science and Technology in Ottawa. I think she became due for boiler work, re-certification, etc., and nobody has come up with the funds to pay for it. I could be wrong, but that's what I heard quite a few years ago.
Last I heard it was a cracked boiler that is currently not in the books to fix at the moment.
And if I'm not mistaken, this was an excursion on CN's Beachburg Subdivision from Ottawa to Pembroke in the late 80's. I recognized the Foresters Falls station name sign in the video.
Thanks for the nice comment. The audio and vid. wasn't the greatest, considering a borrowed camera ( at the time ). I'm still trying to catch-up ( since then ! )
I spent the first half of my childhood on these excursions with my Dad. Not sure which one this is but he likely was the one who arranged the rentals of those via rail cars.
All I remember from these excursions is losing my soother in the club car and getting scared to death on the way to Wakefield in the tunnel under Dows lake.
That could very well be. I didn't put a date on the tape ( stupidly ) as you always think you'll remember..WRONG! 1988 sounds about right, give or take 1-2 years.
I'm surprised nobody posted film on this engine. My footage wasn't MGM quality by any means, and I was using a semi-crappy borrowed camera at the time! Maybe video cameras were not as common then... I didn't own my first one either. Thanks for your comments!
What beautiful vintage railway carriages. LRC trains just don't cut it.

Those light pacifics were some of the very last CP ordered or built themselves. When they were retired they were almost brand new.
Also, very elated to see she still had her original whistle and appears not to be converted to an oil burning engine.
Witnessed the end of steam on both the CP and CN as I lived in Montreal where both railways finished out steam operations.
Very moving video!
