  • Damn good tutorial. Im going to check out your other videos right now. If you have a manual for the 2007 XR650L or similar, then I would REALLY appreciate it my friend. I just got it and its a lot more involved than working on my old YZ125! DoubleRedRolex@gmail.com

  • Hi BigRayH.

I could use the procedure for doing a top end piston replacement on my 2005 XR650L.

    It would be much apreciated.

    Thanks, JIM

  • BigRayH - Dude great job, one of the better tutorial I've seen in a long time.

  • Thanks man. I needed help with this for a '79 xl185s.

  • so do you adjust both intake and exhaust valves at the T line at the same time? when cracking the the crank nut counter clockwise do i do so until i hit the T or do i have to insure im on the compression stroke?

  • thanks for the info saved me a bunch

  • Awesome vid very helpful. If your still offering a xr650l Manual that would be awesome. Andy.Fidler@yahoo.com

  • Excellent Video, You made it really easy to understand, Thanks so much!

  • Awesome video. Have a KZ LTD 440. Answered all my questions.

Plan on rebuilding a card any time soon?

  • xr650l manual. forrest.j7788@student.sanjac.edu

  • also i notice yours was clean where valve adjustments were. mine had oil in there is that a problem?

  • Hey man i have an xr250r and it wont idle or sit at constant revs it get weak and dies. runs well under load but not as i said. i have cleaned carb. replaced plug and air filter. still does it. any ideas for me? have been told could be valve clearances or rings. rekn u could do a vid for rings if u have time?

  • I can't wait for the 2012 XR650L to come out this July!

  • @tagadvance Yeah a new XR650L would be awesome but a street legal 2012 XR650R would be even better! BUT I can only dream, since Honda stopped producing 650R's in 2007. :- (

  • @BigRayH Buy an R already tagged! I just did and I am so stoked!

  • Nice video man. I appreciate the offer with the shop manuals. I've got a library of shop manuals of past bikes, cars and trucks sitting in my garage collecting dust. Too lazy to offer to scan and distribute. Maybe I'll ebay....

  • THANK YOU!!! This helped me alot! Im restoring a 1978 Honda XL 350, Its my first bike. :)

  • That video took the intimidation factor out of doing that job quite effectively. It's on my list of things to do for spring.

  • @verucht Glad I could help!

  • How about a tutorial on changing a clutch on the 650L. No one on You Tube has a decent one.

  • how often do you need to check them? i mean i thought u dont have to with those engines

  • @hondasniper250 I think the manual states that the valves need to be checked every 600 miles or 1000 kilometers, but in the riding season I try to check once a month now. There have been times when I have ridden for months and every time I went to check them they were within spec. The process is only 15-20 minutes or less once you get the hang of it. The only thing to really worry about it tearing up the aluminum valve covers, but a good properly fitting socket should fix that. Thanks!!!!

  • ....than you shouldn't be touching your engine!

  • very good video .

  • I'm about to do my 03 XR400 and it looks like it will work the same. About the TDC, wont you hit the TDC mark on both the exhaust and compresion stroke? I belive that mark will show on both strokes, you want the compression stroke... any thoughts?

  • Thanx...help out bunches!!!

  • @1bigtwalker1 No prob, buddy!

  • great video,very helpful,tanx

  • @KillMurtMaim Who doesn't know how to remove plastics and seat?

  • You miss something very important... for adjusting the right exhaust valve, its not like the others!!

  • @brucenash What did I miss?

  • @BigRayH you have to release the right exhaust valvle from the descompressor. check thos out

  • The auto decompressor will slightly open the RH exhaust valve at cranking speeds to lower the compression and make it easier for the starter motor to crank the engine. If you are turning the crank CCW with the nut on the end of it, you can hear a CLICK as it approaches TDC. That CLICK is the autodecompressor releasing the RH exhaust valve.

  • @brucenash Um, When you are rotating the engine, you get to the Top of the Compression stroke (TDC of Compression), That is where you adjust the valves. The XR650L has an auto decomp, when you rotate in the right direction and pass that specific mark, Which I did, everything is ok to be adjusted. I'm 99.9% positive everything was done right.

  • appreciate it, thx for posting

  • Big Ray you're a pimp. I'm watching vids on thistopic right now trying to psyche myself up for doing the valves on my 81' CB900F. Like others said before, very helpful video, great steady hand and excellent explanations of the process. Thanks man.

  • @huckersteve haha, Thanks Steve. I am gonna start making some more vids one of these days, but always so busy. The bike in this video is a XR650L and i actually sold it. I just bought a XR650R a week ago and as soon as I get that thing worked out and street legal I will make more vids.

  • Thanks guys, I enjoy messing with my bikes.

  • Good video

  • thanks bro!

  • Excellent work BigRay... very helpful... thanks

  • thanks ray..very helpful and very steady camera work

  • @bay2270 Thanks bay

  • thanks ray...it was very detailed...and the camera was steady..appreciate it very much

  • Awesome video Ray, answered a LOT of my questions. I will check out your other videos hopefully you can guide me through my own tune up procedure, even though I have a different bike

  • Thanks for the video. I definitely wanted to see this done before I did my own bike. Looks pretty simple and straightforward.

  • @HappyBirthdayBitches it is simple, but it can be screwed up, and will destroy your bike if you do, so attention to detail is key.

  • millisocket...jk! Dude, awesome video and ya really broke it down barney style.....big props!!!

  • @l07smitty Thx!!

  • Thanks for the video. Very nice, clear description. I also like how you started turning the locking nut in the wrong direction and then casually changed directions. :-)

  • Great Vid ! very well done!

  • @ralphy199 Thanks

  • liked your video very much! useful and informative.. learnt something new today. By the way, i would like to do valve clearance on a cb400 superfour which has an inline-4 engine.. will the valve clearance be the same or more complicated?

  • what about 88 xr 600

  • @robertstott1 Valve adjustment is the same or very similar to the 650L. Shouldnt be a problem

  • mmm makes me think about gettin a xr650, same style engine as a honda 400ex. my ex has a hot cam and pulls nicely weighin 375 pounds , w. the same cam in that bike would be nice eh, dual exhaust is super torquie love it

  • @primomachino Yeah you really cant beat the XR, the only downfall to the XR is the weight.

  • good stuff thanks

  • @clearskyblue Thanks, as soon as it gets warm, I can make more vids.

  • Nice bike, Ray.

  • @Polystigma01 Thanks

  • when u are adjusting your valves is it good to do an oil change? Drain the oil out first then valve change?

  • @BigJon930 Yes its fine to do both at the same time. Personally I would adjust the valves first and then Change the oils. But honestly either way should be fine.

  • if you cant remove the seat and tank on a bike you shoulndt start adjust valves..

  • @cabiii ??

  • good work mate

  • thx

  • nice video keep up the good work...hope u found that valve cover...

  • Great video, really learned a lot, thank you very much!!

  • Thanks for the vid Ray. I think I can handle it now.

  • Hey thanks for the vid. um I have a 2004 crf250r would it be kinda the same idea????

  • I would have to look inside to know for sure.

  • I'm confused to where exactly the feeling gauge goes, does it go under the locking nut? Then you tighten the screw then the nut, that doesn't make sense to me. Its for an XR200 but it looks the same, only 2 vavles.

  • The feeler gauge goes under the screw, tighten the screw to desired position (slight drag), then tighten the nut which will hold the screw in that position. Now when tightening the nut it could actually tighten the screw more than you want so until you have done it a few times it may not be perfect, so check measurement second and third time before you put the cap back on. NOTE: these are instructions for XR650L. I have not looked on the inside of a XR200 but it should be similar.

  • @BigRayH > Still not sure where to stick the feeler gauge, I loosen the locking nut till its right at the top of the screw, from that point where do I put the feeler gauge, is it ontop of the rocker arm that the screw meets, whats holding the screw there if thats the case? Do I have to loosen the screw to get the feeler gauge underneath it maybe? I was abit drunk when I was having ago...

  • Give me a bit, I'll make a short vid to try and explain it.

  • Great video, thanks for taking the time to make such a helpful video, really takes the mystery out of doing a valve adjustment

  • No prob, sams, Its crazy how something that is so minor can initially be very intimidating. Thanks for checking me out and commenting.

  • Yet another great video!

  • Excellent vid man! I´m about to do the valves on my xr650r, and this video gave me a few hints needed. thanks!

  • Thanks Dude, I love working on my bikes. I have 2 more bikes that I am slowly building to working order.

  • Thanks and best regards from Moscow !

  • Thanks bud,!!

  • Verry informative vid man!

    Keep it up!

  • thanks!

  • No Problem, dude, I love taking my bike apart and putting it back together.

  • I have a xr350, and the engine looks very similar, but when I start the engine cold there is a kind of slapping sound at higher RPMs, but the noise goes away once the engine warms up. Do you think that I just need an adjustment?

  • Well Centipeid, Just to let you know, I am not a Mechanic, but slapping noise could be lots of things, Piston, Cams, Valves. and other things.

It could be just cause the engine isn't warm. It is a thumper and they make lots of noise, you just have to figure out if its a normal noise or if something is wrong.

    Hope this helps a bit.
