@kalijasin First of all attacking me by name calling is the first sign of ignorance on your part as you obviously do not have anything of merit to say. Second, if you look at my response it is in response to your first reply to my post (hoping you can keep up with that). I was referring to THOSE people you mentioned that would not interpret certain things because of their religion; THEY need to get a new profession. Perhaps you should read things more than once to make sure you understand.
@stefluvs2sign1 You clearly do not understand English then. You addressed me and then said "you". That's me, not them. If you want to refer to them then you need to use the third person.
My signing is very different because I have seizures. My arms and hands get stiff. Sometimes my brain freezes too. And I tend to sign backwards a lot because that. I sign like the sign for grade when I meant to sign the sign for graduate. And I get treated very differently because of this by both deaf people and Interpreters. I get heavily oppressed equally by both Interpreters and deaf people.
Totally agree, very nice blog. I'm studying an interpreting major and when I do become certified, I can certainly say I won't filter any words or signs for that matter. Interpreters simply act as a mouth for the deaf and hands for the hearing, not a brain for either party.
I've been an interpreter for over 30 years. I would not be doing my job if I left anything out. An interpreter must think ahead and decide if they can do t he job or not. If not, then do not take the job. If you are in a situation where you are forced to do something, i.e. you work for a school or something, remember that your values are not what are at stake here. It is a student's right to know. It is NEVER our right to censor. EVER.
@bearbenami Its different for Deaf with hearing aids. Interpreters act like Hearing aids make us hearing and they get lazy in their interpreting. I have seen even the best do this.
I loved your Vlog. It was very blunt, and to the point. And I agree, too. I think more of an emphasis should be placed on Interpreting everything during Interpreter Training Programs. Even though that was told to us in our ITP, it wasn't stressed on.
I totally agree...anyone ever hear about the butterfly effect? One small change can have a HUGE affect in life. That goes in turn to what the interpeter tells others what we say...they usually add more in detail or change what you say to something more understandable to others, and usually that changes the whole message to mean something else, which is WRONG. I also had another issue with a terp in back in H.S. who wouldn't let me cheat...that wasn't their job as well! Just do your job!!!
@fourtwentier They can't say word for word in English what you sign. Transliteration does not work like that. However, they can't change the context either. Changing the context would be distorting the message or lying.
I met an interpreter that would not even sign the word shit or damn...seriously? Either get a new profession or only interpret at church services, weddings, and funerals the least likely places curse words will pop up.
@kalijasin then get a new profession PERIOD! They are not the interpreter's words or thoughts. It is the words and thoughts of your CLIENT. You JOB that you get PAID WELL TO DO is to interpret the message FAITHFULLY and NOT INTERJECT YOUR PERSONAL OPINIONS. By NOT SIGNING OR VOICING what the person intended bc of your religion is interjecting your personal opinion and AGAINST THE CPC. SEEK A NEW PROFESSION.
Well you know me Jenny and if a hearing person drops the F bomb I am totally signing or fingerspelling it depending on which is appropriate by the context and tone of voice...think it is one of my favorite words lol
i am an interpreting major at school and last year i went to a workshop and they talked about "filters": this means that whatever is heard or seen, you must interpret it and not put up personal filters and change the nature of what is being said. i think that many people don't realize how important this is...and really, it is a part of our job to produce in sign or voice, everything that is being relayed.
before this video i never saw it as oppression, thank you for opening my eyes to that
I would agree with this video by not able to receiving full communication for deaf and hard of hearing that would to provide the best resources to communicate fully what interpreter translate to other and need to provide much information as possible since it would to help fiil in the gap. Communiation is key in general society. Interpreter have to remember communication is about equality even interpreter didnt like it but it require full communication what been said, We deserve full comunication
@stefluvs2sign1 You dolt! I'm not an interpreter.

@stefluvs2sign1 some interpreters are christian or muslim or jew. Thus, the reason they dont like interpreting those words.
