  • Iles Medal 2005

    Established by John Henry Iles (Master 1932-1933) the Iles Medal is awarded annually in recognition of services to the brass band movement.

  • Paul Hindmarsh was introduced to music through the brass bands of the Salvation Army. A graduate of Birmingham University, he was much in demand during the late 1970’s and 1980’s as a tenor soloist, including Edinburgh and the BBC Proms, regular broadcasts and recordings. Since 1985 he has been a producer for the BBC in Manchester, working across a range of programmes for Radio 3.

  • Paul has also published many new editions of English music of the 20th Century, majoring in the music of Frank Bridge, Benjamin Britten and Wilfred Heaton. He maintains an active interest in many aspects of British music, including the brass band and is much in demand as producer, author and occasionally conductor. Paul spent three rewarding years as Musical Director of Besses o’ th’ Barn Band in the early 1990’s.

  • In 1994 he established The Brass Band Heritage Trust to “preserve the past, promote the present and foster the future” of the brass band movement in Britain. As part of its support for young brass players the BBHT managed the National Youth Brass Band Championships for six years. Since 1990, Paul has commissioned through BBC Radio 3 and the BBHT over thirty new works for brass band, including a number of major contest pieces.
