The reason why the train traveled at a low speed is due to the fact that the train was arriving at Union Station, the terminus for both the Metro Red Line and the Metro Purple Line. The horn heard at the beginning of the video was more than likely used to alert passengers at the next station that a train will soon be arriving. The latter train in the video that came from the opposite direction of the first train was due to the fact that it was comming from the at-grade railyard just past Union
@LosAngelesMetroRail That is actually wrong. Yes the have a speed restriction, but usuage of the horns were disallowed due to them being too disruptive (loud) so this is probably due to someone walking on the edge or over the black and yellow safety lines.
It is fairly "safe" (e.g. crime-wise). The layout is fairly straight forward as far as ticketing and transfers go, however, I don't know where they serve that you would want to go.
It's totally safe. Just mind your business and don't wear flowery tourist shirts, have a camera hanging from your neck, and walk around everywhere with a map constantly in front of your face. Common sense stuff.
But I've NEVER had a problem on Gold or Blue lines, except an argument with a Ron Paul for President nutcase cult follower.
And if you ever have a problem on any public transit, just say "God bless you brother. Jesus saves." And that will turn any asshole back. On the Blue Line, it goes through Black residential areas, and you will have the occaisional preacher man spouting Jesus on the train. DON'T LAUGH at them. Just remain pleasant and mind your business.
its safe blue line takes u through compton which really aint that bad. The blue line ends in long beach though. the red line takes you from downtown to north hollywood
@svartmetall48 I visited LA last year for official business downtown. I'm not a local, and didn't feel scared at all on the red line. It took 9 minutes to get from my motel in Hollywood to downtown. For $5.00, you can ride buses and trains all day.
Maybe stopping and honking is a sign that it's coming out of service because there was an announcement when the train doors opened that said, "This is the last stop for this train. It's being taken out of service." Another reason it could have stopped and honked is because somebody might have been standing on the yellow line and that's not allowed.
hey goldeneagle2007 i think i might have the answer for that the reason the enginner may stop and honk the horn so the that passengers stand behind the yellow line so that the passengers to not fall past the line
I think the signal was maybe red becuase it is a 6 car train and they need to pull in all the way. also, the i think the anouncement said "this train will be out of service"
WMATA's Rohr 1000 Series went through a mid-life overhaul in the 1990s by Breda (who built LACMTA's A650 cars) and were refitted with the same General Electric (GE) traction motors as the LACMTA red and purple line cars.
Yeah. It runs directly underneath (parallel underground) LAUPT's tracks and then curves west to either Wilshire/Western (Purple Line) or North Hollywood (Red Line)

How safe would you say it is to take the Red and Blue lines in LA for a tourist who doesn't know the local area?

I think the Red & Blue lines are safe. They're patroled by the L.A. County Sheriff's Dept. There's always a cop nearby. Cameras everywhere.

Why did that train take so long just to pull into the platform?
murjax 4 years ago
Well, I don't know why he stopped and honked, but I know that they have a speed restriction approaching Union Station.

@goldeneagle2007 there was maybe another train at the end

if you've been to brooklyn or more specifically, Atlantic Ave. on the B/Q platform, you'll know.
YouAreABunghole 2 months ago
@YouAreABunghole Atlantic Ave is used by 6 different routes. Are you suggesting that this occurs due to traffic with the other trains on that line?
murjax 2 months ago
@murjax
the Brighton line platform is used by two lines, look at any southbound train of B/Q and you'll see what I mean.

wow the cars sound like the ones from the DC Metro

Half of their cars are CAF and Rohr and they all sound very much like LA's.
