I feel you have to think things more in deep. The cost Japan have been spending for its protection was not small, although it did not show up as weapon. It was USA who feared Japanese technology and wished keep eyes on it as "ally". Japan knew it and accepted the role to control world by economy, the other and stronger method of national security. Even China can't attack Japan since materials and parts they are buying are ones only Japan can produce. Got it?

This is what we need in the UK - to replace our shambolic rail system we have now. Not just from London to Birmingham as Cameron has approved, but connecting with HS1 to link up Europe with Scotland and all parts of the UK which is more worthwhile. Trouble is, it would cost a lot to go on and people would just still use cars and cause more traffic jams. UK rail travel is such a ripoff compared to the rest of Europe and indeed the world.

How does this compare to the UK, say between London and Glasgow, about 400 miles. I know the rail time is 4hrs 20min and by air, 3 hours including travelling to the city centres and the air fare is £101 plus taxi to Glasgow City(another 20 pounds) plus whatever it costs to get from London to Heathrow.

@commfg23 dude that's the magic, that's why the fare is affordable. yes, bullet train on conventional rail track. It shares the station and maintenance cost with ordinary trains.

@commfg23 leaving out really extreme terrain and weather condition, I think it basically works well on most terrain like most trains. It still needs its own separate track with gentler curves though, due to its constantly high speed during the course.
