Nice router jig Chris. Just a note to prospective builders...check your router base for the mounting holes. I was laying one of these out and the base on my Bosch Colt Router just happens to mount in the same location where the steel rods insert, thus I made the base 4.5" wide and moved the rods out .25" (still in .5" from each side).
I would be tempted to use a 'machinists' vice' on the table to hold the workpieces still. But this is a good idea and would be good in 'Tufnol' (Canvas laminations, soaked and glued with animal glue under heat and pressure and rolled out into sheets of varying thicknesses.)
You're right about UHMW. I was an R&D machinist for 13 years and we used it but it gives so much that it's hard to machine cleanly. Delrin is expensive. Polycarb is good. Another option is phenloic plywood but you would probably have to use threaded inserts. Aluminum works great but it can stain the wood so you would have to cover the bottom with PVC tape or something.
After making this I would suggest using Polycarconate (not Acrylic/plexi) , Delrin or even a nice hardwood over UHMW for this base. I don't like the way UHMW machines. It really doesn't tap very well and even drilling and hole sawing it can be a tad difficult as you can see in the video. Just my opinion on how to make it easier for you all.
nice work man. My uncle has a bridgeport. Maybe i'll make one.
