Michael MacDonald saved the Doobie Brothers from extinction in 1975. The Doobie Brothers were going the way of the Beatles did incalling it quits with Tom Johnston's serious health crisis and the touring taking it's toll on the band. Tiran Porter got tired of touring with them and quit in 1993. He never returned to the Doobie Brothers since..
By late 1975, touring was beginning to take its toll on the band, especially leader Tom Johnston. Things became worse during touring in support of "Stampede" when he was diagnosed with stomach ulcers. His condition worsened and several shows had to be canceled. With Johnston forced to reduce his involvement with the band, the other members considered just calling it quits
@BBQFanNo1 Micheal McDonald was added because Tom Johnston decided to leave the band because he was tired of the touring by 1975. Tiran Porter decided to leave them by the early 1990s because he was tired of the touring. People move on with life man. Even the Beatles got tired of being the Beatles together and broke up going their own personal ways and on with their own personal lives.
BBQFanNo1"
Ya, I'm fine with that, just don't think he was the right voice for the job. Too forced sounding.
@Rennovahtio Micheal McDonald stepping in saved Tom Johnston's life. Tom Johnston was dying and too much touring was killing him like it killed Elvis Presley and was killing the other Doobie Brothers member Tiran Porter by the early 1990s. People have to have a break from touring or they end up dead.
This song always makes we want to get away from my grey winter skies,it always lifts my spirit-way,way,way up high-up to the blue skies, beautiful girls, warm tropical waters,beaches-it is a Mona Lisa of imagery-a transport to another place, another time-"Beaches and the sea"-"Thats where I long to be"-Jump on the boat and sail"-to "Rio"-Have you ever seen,or been to, Rio, my friends?Perhaps you should check into it!(p.s.-nice job on the solo skunk-H.R.is proud of you)
@nseign Yeah, most of them. bought a book with Takin' it to the Streets chords 30 some years ago. Played this tune with a little combo, the 5/4 part is cool.......Book Doesn't have them all but has most of the tune, you can figure out the rest. send me a mailing address and i'll get something to ya....... remember , not supposed to use this kinda stuff for commercial purposes, only to educate yourself....................................
@BBQFanNo1 because smacking me will help me appreciate the doobie brothers? I don't think it's going to work. You gotta hit me harder than that, I need some brain damage and maybe I'll be retarded enough to start liking the chorus.
And why do you gotta be an internet tough guy? you sound like you're old, why don't you act your age. I think all that BBQ de-greasing got to your head. You start liking hill billy music and make outrageous claims like i don't like jazz.
The fact that a Hip-Hop producer (in this case Madlib) just needs a small portion of a Doobie Brothers joint to create one of the dopest beats I've ever heard is a major proof that music is a universal language.
@BBQFanNo1 Come on now. A lot of Rap/Hip-Hop music is pretty decent. It's not fair to talk down on all of it. Run-DMC and Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five are Hall of Famers.
@BBQFanNo1 Yeah it's good music but I can tell by your comments that for some strange reason you have no respect for "Rock/Soul" music. You made comments like "...they outgrew it because they knew there was more important things in life", really, like what? It's all music and there are different styles and sounds of music, there's nothing to "outgrow", it's all about what YOU like. I would say "they" just got bored with one style of music and needed a change, not that they "outgrew" it.
@455Transam I apologize if there was anything posted in the wrong context or disrespectful. I understand what you mean. I have played bass since 1970. I was strictly Rock & Roll,Etc and nothing else up to 1969. I was not even open minded to anything else in Music. Then shortly after by mid 1970 I expanded my interests into every different variety styles of Music along with Rock Music.
@BBQFanNo1 Yes, it is my taste and my business, never said everyone had to think like me.
I'm giving my opinion like everyone else.
I LOVE Chicago with Terry Kath, I "Like" them without him, but without him they're just another "Pop" band, again my opinion but I know I'm not alone on that one.
@BBQFanNo1 ......Are you SERIOIUS?? PABLO CRUISE!!?? REALLY??!! LOL!!!!!
Get off your High Horse BBQBOY, everyone is entitled to their own opinion and YOU telling people not to complain about post Tom Johnston Doobies isn't cool either.
I never said I didn't like the McDonald Doobies, I do, and some of my fav Doobie tunes are "Echos of Love" and "It Keeps You Runnin" but I like the Johnston "Rock Soul" years more.
When this album was first released, a lot of people (especially Doobie Brothers fans) were shocked. The band had gone off in a completely different direction, and few (if any) people saw it coming. They lost a lot of fans, but they gained a lot too. On it's own merits, it's an awesome album, and I consider it as one of my all time favorites.
The Doobies were one of the most versatile bands of all time, I didn't care for the McDonald time but some serious gems did come out of it. This is pure class , And they always did have a taste of Jazz influnce along with rock and country.
This is just wonderful. I suspect it's a Michael Mcdonald influence that made this sound so jazz.
I got into Doobies on the back of this album and "Livin' on the Faultline". Much of their other material is a bit country rock for me, still brilliantly played but without the rich harmonic structure. Oh well, to each his own.
@Moggggpiano I agree. Much of their earlier comps were that. Cotton Mouth from Toulousse Street 1972 was my favorite pre Micheal McDonald Doobie Brothers because of the Memphis-New Orleans Horns Section. You got to have that plus Funky Soul Sound. The Bass is the key to any style of Music.

Adding McDonald's voice to the band changed it for the worse.
I always picture a singing bull moose when I hear his voice.
This is still a HOT album!
