  • modualr engines were just made to be boosted, they shoulda put some boost to them years ago. They run so much smoother with boost then a in-block cam engine. Its just a fact. But i have to say turbo 5.0's and turbo ls1s with the rite cam get it too, but the modualar engines, especially DOHC's just get it alot more.

    The giant air-flowing heads, on a smaller block/engine, is the best setup to boost. Its like the v-tech/honda of U.S. They will still set you in the seat all day long with awsome MPG

  • @Ninesecsnake Why turbos? I have 2003 GT and I would like to add a supercharger to it. I need to rebuild the engine, it has 150k miles on it and I want a forged bottom end. A speed shop recommended using a turbo but my problem is 1) isn't there a lot of heat generated from all that plumbing and 2) isn't turbo lag a problem? I like your setup though, it's clean as shit. What do you get on a dyno?

    A small turbo will not give as much turbo lag and if you have a Sequential TT (Twin Turbo) setup you'll have basically very little no no turbo lag at all. Not as much heat as you think is generated, if there was not as many people would go the turbo route, a lot of people go the turbo route isntead of a Supercharger. Sc's are good but it takes HP to make Hp. With a turbo you dont have that.

  • That only applies when you want to make say 800hp and only loose only 80 hp due to manifold back pressure. But when you make 2000hp with a turbo vs 1800hp with a supercharger the increased drivability of the super charger will give better real world performance.

    Power is nothing without control!!!!!

    How many 2000WHP or even BHP cars do you see driving around the street???? Ive never seen any, and I live in the town with the worlds largest auto auction. Ive seen just about ever car, but with even 1800BHP drivibality is a concern. But you can make 2000WHP with a sequential TT setup and have it be driviable. Throttle control plays a huge roll when having even 800BHP let alone 1800BHP or more. Tires are another, even 600BHP can have shitty drivability traits.

  • I've heard the argument about giving up hp to get hp but mine is a street car, losing 20 horses to turn the sc is no biggie - but you are right, when I changed to under pullies i shit, it made a BIG difference. I had a turbocharged car in the mid-80's, hated it. I hated waiting for it too cool down and probably led to it's quick demise at 100k. It was a $1500 part then.

  • Yeah I'm, not saying turbo cars are the way to go, I'm just staing why people might go the turbo route. Personally I'd rather have a SC under my hood then a turbo for the most part. There's a reason why Rail cars and funny cars that make 8000WHP use SC's instead of a TT setup. As long as your making more Hp then you take away it's alright in my book.

  • Turbo lag, also turbo's do not produce the torque that a super charger needs in a methanol injected engin (A diesel is another story though) Also with the amount of fuel that is not being burnt by the engine it's just going to lag the turbo and re-introduce that none burn fuel into the carb causing it to be even more rich which means even less power. Also you wouldnt not be able to run open header like they do, so the amount of back pressure would be enormouse. There's actually several reasons

  • not all turbos have blow off valves. Its actually better not have one. It robs some horsepower.

  • it doesnt rob horse power, it saves the turbo from surge coming back to the inlet when the throtle is not on!

  • thats not completly right the reason you would use a BOV is to release unused pressure made by the turbo so it doesnt back feed and ruin the turbo.... correct me if im wrong somebody

  • open downpipes and light revs, you wont hear any BOV. You can clearly see them on each side of the throttle body with anodized black tops. I would know, since he built this car in our back shop and I race with him every weekend. This car was also featured in 5.0 magazine...

  • Definitely a really,really tight squeeze. A 5.4/ 4.6 motor is approximately the same size as a big Block Ford ( 427-428-429-460) not including turbos!!!

    Lots of cutting,hacking ,welding and modifying but well worth it !

  • ur thinking about conventional cams... most ford motors use roller cams, they reduce friction, and are more efficient, which is why the mustang has always had them... (not dual though)

  • Just got my tumbleport heads and can't wait to start building them up a bit. I think I will go a size larger on the valves in stainless and clean up the ports a bit. This isn't much, but it's a start instead of just talking about doing something.

  • It was originally out of a 99, but it now has a new NVH block and 04 ported navi-heads

The best the best thing about this car is that it's a total sleeper minus a two step cowl hood, and sometimes he drives around w the parachute on. I wonder what John Colleti thinks of this bad girl?

  • It has been done multiple times on 03/04 cobras and the setup works,However the stock eaton blower tends to be the bottleneck in the system.I havent seen any with aftermarket blowers and turbos.For max horsepower just running a turbo setup is always the best way to go imo,a supercharger can only flow so much air.

  • Um. Im gonna have to agree. You can run both, but unless you have an extremely well built motor as well as crank, you will over pressurize the air and the motor will let loose on you. Bad idea

  • Also a non-centrifugal supercharger puts out linear boost while a paxton type or turbo has an exponential output. Don't forget that the resistance to airflow in the engine also increases exponentially. so I think the increase in manifold pressure from a turbo wouldn't necessarily convert directly into higher static cylinder pressure.

  • A turbo only moving air wouldn't explode. as far as the piston physics go the piston doesn't pump the turbo. a turbocharged engine is essentially a jet engine in which the piston is an in-direct transmission method to convert combustion pressure into mechanical motion

  • no sir. i have a 2003. there is a guy with a lightning 5.4 2V in his 2000 crown vic.look up quickcrownvic on here. they are basically the same size as a 4.6 just a little bit taller. and since i would just get a regular 2V triton from a truck, i could use a 4.6 manifold with an adaptor and fit it under the stock hood.

  • thats a good swap too. i thought about that, but i realized its easier and not even really more expensive to just put in a 5.4 SOHC. i heard its a simple swap and all the sensors are the same so you can use the same harness. the DOHC 4.6 on the other hand would probably require some sort of frankenstein harness mess that i personally couldnt do, but you may have skills to do.
