i believe the laughter was more about the fact that they had all just oood and ahhd at the announcement rather than laughing at catholics or anyone else...
I blog from Northern Italy, and I just posted our experience watching the Groundbreaking for the Rome Italy Temple. Read it here: casteluzzo DOT blogspot DOT com
Also, seeing as Rome is a city of superlative architecture... I sincerely hope that the LDS Church doesn't just plop down one of their cookie-cutter temples and call it a day. I want unique and beautiful architecture!
@Doliath Dont worry brother I am sure it well but just as good as the Salt Lake Temple but its not the look that counts it's the work that counts the work inside the temple
I think having a Temple built in Rome is fascinating! I can't wait to see it completed! I was thrilled to hear President Monson announce this in Conference!
Boy,momo's don't stop at nothin do they. Isnt one "temple" enough? Do they really think theyre gonna convert the devout Catholics? Aint gonna happen I assure you. Besides, what do they know about the history of art, the papacy, and the history and culture of Italy!
I swear first they were trying to take out the crucifix from Italian public schools (which got the Pope angry and didn't work), now this? But don't worry, Rome is the Eternal City, and hopefully all present Italian Mormons will look at the ugly truth about Mormonism and revert to the beautiful Roman Catholic Church.
@Jubjub1878 Mormons won't convert Catholics, the Spirit of God will. Mormons will carry the message to them. Already the Spirit is speaking to those who are ready.
Do you think a temple is enough for millions of people in the entire world? Do you know how much money would cost to people everywhere to go to one single temple? We don't build temples to convert others, we build temples for ourselves. i was so happy to have a temple in Rome, not because is somehow" related" to the catholic church (I think none of the LDS thought about it), but because is closer than the Swiss temple...
it just continues....do you see the hypocrisy here? Catholics voted for Romney as Gov and many for Rep nominee and you guys turn this around and attack the Pope and Roman Catholics just due to their faith? How would you feel if we attacked Pres Monson, who is a fine and decent man??? The rhetoric above is sad, if anyone should know how Catholics have been mistreated it should be Mormons, but this has become a forum for denigration
@cemiami - if anyone is attacking the Pope and Catholics here, they are wrong. As much as the LDS people have been persecuted, we should know how stupid and wrong it is to attack or denigrate other religions. I share your indignation. Shame on any of you (LDS or not) who choose to attack any other religion.
@cemiami No one is attacking the pope or Roman Catholicism. I am an Italian LDS. Catholics are just as welcome as LDS in Italy. No one is taking away the fact that Italy is a Catholic nation. Catholics, in my view, are hurting themselves by embracing secularism at every turn.
Only the Church stood squarely across the path of Hitler's campaign for suppressing truth. I never had any special interest in the Church before, but now I feel a great affection and admiration because the Church alone has had the courage and persistence to stand for intellectual truth and moral freedom. I am forced thus to confess that what I once despised I now praise unreservedly. - Albert Einstein
Don't believe every conspiracy theory you hear because it sounds cool... :)~
As a Mormon I don't have any anti-Catholic sentiments. Catholics and Mormons get along fine as far as I am concerned. They cooperate over inter-faith and humanitarian issues, they supported each other over Prop 8, and the Catholic Church in Utah has excellent relationship with the LDS Church. Bad things exist in the history of all religions.
We build temples in various locations in order to serve our growing membership in those areas. It is not a statement for or against the Catholic Church.
Actually God and Jesus did somthing about it, they restored the true Church of Christ on the earth again (With the help of Joseph Smith). I know Mormons and Satans can't do much about the Catholic church, but it doesn't matter both no the church is not true, so they don't bother with it!
The Vatican is it's own city-state! So it is pretty much it's own country in the middle of Rome! So why should the Vatican have any say in what happens in Rome?
Why do I really care how many Mormons attend the Temple in Italy? Oh, and hey face it there are tons of Mormons in Italy! That is why the Church is building a Temple there. Only areas with a high amount of Church Members get Temples. Guess the Pope freakin' out that the True Church of Christ is becoming more established in Rome.
What I think LukeAir is that you are a typical Mormon bigot, that whereas the LDS feigns association with the Catholic Church (and with other evangelicals, which have even bigger issues with LDS), the reality is another. Your buddy Mitt was elected Gov of the state w/ more Catholics per capita than any other state you moron...because they viewed him as good man, not like you to attacks Catholics for their faith
Really, for some reason I doubt that. If you have so much money why is so much of the Catholic Church's debt increasingly being packaged and sold as bonds.
"Debt" has to be broken down as certain Archdioceses have issues, at a local or national level, for example mine in South Florida but the Vatican remains the largest property holder in the world and the provider of more humanitarian assistance on a daily level, per capita, than any other nation state
Please Mormons don't reject the Bible! Your just saying that because the mormon church follows the bible more than your church does. There is a video called "Does Mormonism comply with Biblical Doctrine?" you should watch it!
Yep, to bad the Catholic Church is not as fair as the LDS Church. We let the Catholics have a cathedral in Salt Lake City, but the Pope has to pee his pants about a temple in Rome.
The Pope has to "pee in his pants"??? What are you, like 12 years old? Go back to Dan Brown books and Ron Howard movies....
Benedict XVI is a man of courage, honor and wisdom. Did you even watch his trip to America last year, your church sent out two Elders to meet him, amongst other religious groups...
Pres Bush received him and feted him in an amazing way, as did our Jewish brothers and sisters in NYC when he went to a synagogue.
Well I would bet that the 22,000 Mormons in Italy would attend it. Anyways, Temples are really not meant to be tourist attractions, like St. Peter's & The Sistine Chapel. Also unlike the Catholic Church we can afford to build plenty of Temples, so people don't have to go all the way to Salt Lake City to go to one.
You might want to get your figures right, there are 1 billion Catholics worldwide and Churches are being built ever day in South Asia, Africa and even in the Middle East. (see Qatar, first Christian Church on the Arabian Peninsula)
Sure, there are tourists that flock to St Peter's Basilica but masses, funerals, ceremonies have been held there 1800 years before even Joseph Smith was born....
11We claim the privitege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where or what they may.
You have a church in our city too (more than one church). We don't complain about that. As to which church is true, that is a matter of opinion I guess.
I am so happy for the people in Rome, Italy. It is about time they got a temple! Just like it was prophesied that the gospel would be known around the world. Each temple has it's own unique beauty. I can't wait to see how this one will turn out!!

There were a few mean rhetoric coming from a non-Mormon which I have deleted. I don't see any bigotry coming from the Mormon side though.
