Also, seeing as Rome is a city of superlative architecture... I sincerely hope that the LDS Church doesn't just plop down one of their cookie-cutter temples and call it a day. I want unique and beautiful architecture!

I think having a Temple built in Rome is fascinating! I can't wait to see it completed! I was thrilled to hear President Monson announce this in Conference!

I swear first they were trying to take out the crucifix from Italian public schools (which got the Pope angry and didn't work), now this? Do you think a temple is enough for millions of people in the entire world? Do you know how much money would cost to people everywhere to go to one single temple? We don't build temples to convert others, we build temples for ourselves. i was so happy to have a temple in Rome, not because is somehow" related" to the catholic church (I think none of the LDS thought about it), but because is closer than the Swiss temple...

@cemiami No one is attacking the pope or Roman Catholicism. I am an Italian LDS. Catholics are just as welcome as LDS in Italy. No one is taking away the fact that Italy is a Catholic nation. Catholics, in my view, are hurting themselves by embracing secularism at every turn.

As a Mormon I don't have any anti-Catholic sentiments. Catholics and Mormons get along fine as far as I am concerned. They cooperate over inter-faith and humanitarian issues, they supported each other over Prop 8, and the Catholic Church in Utah has excellent relationship with the LDS Church. Bad things exist in the history of all religions.

We build temples in various locations in order to serve our growing membership in those areas. It is not a statement for or against the Catholic Church.

Why do I really care how many Mormons attend the Temple in Italy? Oh, and hey face it there are tons of Mormons in Italy! That is why the Church is building a Temple there. Only areas with a high amount of Church Members get Temples. Guess the Pope freakin' out that the True Church of Christ is becoming more established in Rome.

"Debt" has to be broken down as certain Archdioceses have issues, at a local or national level, for example mine in South Florida but the Vatican remains the largest property holder in the world and the provider of more humanitarian assistance on a daily level, per capita, than any other nation state

Benedict XVI is a man of courage, honor and wisdom. Did you even watch his trip to America last year, your church sent out two Elders to meet him, amongst other religious groups...

Well I would bet that the 22,000 Mormons in Italy would attend it. Anyways, Temples are really not meant to be tourist attractions, like St. Peter's & The Sistine Chapel. Also unlike the Catholic Church we can afford to build plenty of Temples, so people don't have to go all the way to Salt Lake City to go to one.

You might want to get your figures right, there are 1 billion Catholics worldwide and Churches are being built ever day in South Asia, Africa and even in the Middle East. (see Qatar, first Christian Church on the Arabian Peninsula)

Sure, there are tourists that flock to St Peter's Basilica but masses, funerals, ceremonies have been held there 1800 years before even Joseph Smith was born....
