@74jailbreaker I went to U of A 86 - 90. Saw a TON of good shows: Dire Straits, Robert Plant, The Cult, Billy Idol, Tom Petty, etc. Bands will start their tour in Tucson, then Phoenix - to work out the kinks in their shows before heading to LA.
These guys rock. I saw them twice in the 70's and they still put out high voltage rock. Ears ringing next day, beautiful. Buffalo Auditorium, the best. I love these guys...
I wish they would start playing this song again. That and Passage to Bangkok. I wonder if you could get them to play it if everybody in the stadium cheered for it. Definitely worth trying
People think Tom Sawyer is better than this? I don't understand... Tom Sawyer is good but it doesn't compare to this song. Definitely one of Rush's best short songs
I heard a story from a Rush fan who lived in Tucson. The last time Rush played a show in Tucson, someone in the audience threw a bottle that hit Geddy. After this incident Geddy said that Rush would never play another show in Tucson. Can anyone confirm this Tucson bottle throwing incident?
The studio version of this after listening to the other songs and feeling the story unfold as R U S H intends it has to be experienced before trying to appreciate it live.
if your a certain RUSH person,i'll say..... this shit is a time machine......2112 will always be my favorite album...not a week goes by without some rush.caress of steel -permanent waves.....is the best RUSH........................
Being a "youngster" living in Tucson, I'm kinda sad that they won't be coming here on the Time Machine Tour. I would have loved to be there, but I was some 10-20 years late :( My father saw them here -- TWICE!
@johnny wr Yes would open for Rush.Rush has much more expansive catalog of music.Anyway why would Rush even need to take anyone on tour with them? They dont cuz they dont need to.Its just a waste of time.Anybody going to see Rush wants only to see them.Thanx not pickin a fight.Just saying.
@crocodilewerewolf They looked into it for the Snakes and Arrows tour but Geddy said he couldn't sing it anymore. Too frickin high pitched for him now. And it is one of his highest pitched songs.
Geddy said in an interview that they always bring back a few old school songs for the fans on tour, and they started to rehearse this one for the Snakes and Arrows tour, but he said it just didn't feel right so they scrapped it for something else. They might bring it back again in the future, who knows. The hardest thing for these old songs is that Geddy can't scream like he used to, but he manages sometimes. They brought back Circumstances, after all, and I think they lowered the tone a bit.
@Vince1961 there is a live version on the Different Stages boxset released officially and they closed most of their 1977 shows with it so there are probably a dozen bootlegs with it aswell
I wish YES asked Rush to support them on their Tormato tour, at least it would have been interesting and Rush would have have gotten so much more exposure.
@tomitstube How we have moved away from the old to the new and how its not always better "we turn our gaze from castles in the distance, eyes cast down on the past of leat resistance"
Saw them on this tour, their first headlining tour 1977 at the old 'Paramount' in Portland Oregon. Still my favorite show and album. Saw the 'Time machine Tour' last week. They are at the top of their game.Still the greatest band on the planet!!!!
@michaelggood it's recorded off the soundboard so it was probably for radio broadcast, so they will have it in their archive somewhere whether they'll release it we shall have to wait and see, but i wouldnt hold your breath there are dozens of these soundboards not just from Rush that never see the light of day
Wow, great recording! Was this at TCC or Mchale? I saw them twice at TCC for the Grace Under Pressure tour and Power Windows. Best band in the world- new single Caravan is AWESOME! I am a diehard Rush fan and Farewell To Kings is my fave hands down!
Wow, that breakdown during the solo section was great! Wonder why they didn't put this version on the Different Stages release? Best guitar solo I've heard on this tune played live.
This is the very 1st Rush song I ever heard. I was in grade 9 and Rush was playing live on the Juno awards. I was a big fan of BTO until I watched Rush play this song. It has been a Love affair that has lasted 33 years.
No one else plays like Alex. His solos transport me to places I just never get to when listening to other guitarists.
Take this solo for example and those from songs such as Freewill, Limelight, Chemistry, The Trees, The Analogue Kid, YYZ, and Natural Science to name but a few. Who else plays like this?
Alex is sometimes weird and zany, sometimes daft, sometimes gentle, sometimes fiery, yet always artisitc and always musical.
A true artisan; Alex takes the biscuit as far as I'm concerned.
I've been listening to Rush for 30 years, and seen them almost 100 times. Every single time I put on an album, I hear something new in at least one song. It could be one note, one chord, a flam or grace note, but it's incredible that it never fails!
I know. I am in the same situation. Only I have only seen them 99 times. Actually, haven't seen them since 1986. Just didn't like their music from 1986-present. But that's what's so great about them. They are still my best band because you always hear something different everytime you hear them. Many say they are boring because they play live the same they play in studio. Obviously, like you they don't realize how improv they really are. Great Comment.
How cool to have this, I defnitly saw the shirts from this show in the halls of Sabino High, but didn't catch 'em 'til Moving Pictures & Signals. 2nd fave !
A masterclass in bass, drums & lead - take a listen to accuracy of Geddy Lee and Neil Peart on the drum & bass break halfway through - no wonder they are musicians musicians.

hey, ive been looking everywhere for this bootleg, all of the torrents have no seeders and all the megaupload links dont work. do you think you could put a download link in the description?
I remember when I was a kid watching the Juno Awards and they showed a clip of "A Farewell to Kings". Needless to say the Aerosmith albums got less rotation time after that. Rush became my favorite band largely based on that performance-they were completely different than anything I had ever seen.
Interesting what everyone's saying about playing more old stuff next time. I doubt it. The S & A was billed as the anniversary of Farewell to Kings (even had tshirts saying the same) yet played nothing of note from that album.
Agreed this is arguably the greatest cult classic by rush (doesn't make it on best ofs and doesn't get played live) yet everyone loves it.
well there working on a new album this autumn so they should be on tour the the anniversary of permanent waves maybe that will make a more "old school" setlist
Thanks alot for posting this. The 'Different Stages' version of this song is actually THE song that got me into Rush. I have this whole album right now, courtesy of Megaupload, and it is quite the album. I agree with earlier posts, they should bring back songs like this one. Imagine hearing this and Cinderella Man, parts of the Cygnus Books at a show, even In the End, Lakeside Park, or Anthem...I think I'd faint.
the roll the bones tour proved that ged can still sing anthem and i think it should always be an opener for them and hemispheres is definitely a must do its one of their greatest and of course la villa shud never be dropped and id love to see the WHOLE of xanadu
lol Yeah, I would too:) I was reading a Lifeson interview, and he said "The Camera Eye" and "A Farewell to Kings" were final cuts from the "S&A" setlist, so I'm guessing we should see those next tour.
What? My downloads are cd quality. I had to use a file downloading site for this album, I looked everywhere.
