  • Yes, you're right. In classical music theory a chord is considered to have at least 3 notes. There is the root note and its fifth interval played togheter which in rock is called "power chord" XD Rock, metal and stuff got distorsion, and a 3note chord doesen't sound nice when it's amplified,in most cases. But Alexi is a converted metalhead(he studied classical music before, obsvious, his first instrument was a violin, and he would agree with you too). That's why he call them chords :D

  • @SlayerKillingFields He didn't study classical music, he just listened to it. He calls them chords because he doesn't know anything about music theory just what he plays. I still think he has amazing solos (on his recordings. He was the guy that got me into my "shredding" phase but the more I hear him talk and play its kinda like ehhhh. Put him side by side with Andy Timmons and see who rips live. Anyone can sound good on a record.

  • @evilpoptartz7 yeah metal music is not necessarily based off of music theory in a normal sense. it's basically doing whatever, with whatever scales, and whatever chords you want. you can break a lot of rules. you can change from minor to phrygian in a snap if you want, you can play minor intervals when they should be major, etc. the routes of the chords are from the scale you're in, but no one stays COMPLETELY tonal anymore. so no REAL knowledge of music theory is needed to play metal.

  • @TheMetalHeaD256 tell that to dave murrey and ull get slap in the face

  • @emilio124567 nah, he'd agree with me. Maiden always stayed within a scale. i'm talking about modern day metal. and i'm not saying any of that stuff is a bad thing.

  • @TheMetalHeaD256 if ur talking about stuff like cryptosy modern necrophagist obscura and NIle ill have then ur kinda wrong these is really technical stuff

if ur talking about black veil brides and a7x their not metal their fing posers that dress like little girls and have very small talent

if ur talking about kreator and exodus and thrashmetal well thats most riff based but still the solos follow a basic key or some sorta formatstill kinda techincal but mroe lets kick asstype

  • @evilpoptartz7 i mean just look at Slayer... need more be said? hahaha. and yeah i definitely agree with you. Alexi can't play too good live because he's stoned and drunk out of his mind. he's the modern-day Dave Mustaine.

  • @TheMetalHeaD256 wowowowowo i swa him live 3 weeks ago im sorry but if a 10 minutose solo between him and warman isnt good then u tell me

bbtw most of the amps were failing and he stilled playd awsom

  • @emilio124567 ok, i've been proven wrong i guess. but in a lot of his performances on youtube i've seen him screw up. it may always be that it sucks playing guitar and singing at the same time... i've discovered that recently. it is hard as shit. he might not have had trouble during a solo for that reason: he can focus on his instrument alone.

so yeah that proves me wrong. thanks for telling me.

  • @TheMetalHeaD256 to actually judge him u have to atleast see him live to understand how good this guy is

and btw in most live preformance theirs always gonna be diffs betweem the recording that doesnt mean he screws up also remeber that the sound in a recording is diff live so that could be it but this guy is total guitar god

  • @evilpoptartz7 he know much more then you think about music theory...but he doesnt give a shit about the way he calls them

  • @SlayerKillingFields alot of metalheads actually study classical musica take cliff burton rhandy roads or chris brodrick well atleast great musicians do

  • Those are intervals not chords

  • what dvd are these videos in?

  • @7ustice nvm found it lol

  • @7ustice rockhouse method? idk no way to torrent or get these tabs as far as i know, registration is more complicated then the cryptex,.

  • I use all those chords...

in clean though, never really practice that much with distortion although it's hard for me to find chords that compliment each other in an evil way, atleast for me it is.

  • Press CC, select transcribe audio at 1:25 hidden message.

  • @SpoonsXownXsinceX92 Your discovery made my day, thank you sir :D

  • @broodrooster22 I always help fellow Dutchies, and others. . . So why I specified, I don't know. . . Anyway, cheers.

  • They are technically not even chords; they are intervals. lol.

  • @Russelcrewe Yeah, lol.

  • @Russelcrewe Exactly

  • @Russelcrewe ppl call them power chords? id even know what intervals are ><

  • 0:06 ?↓

  • wow, now I no the names of intervals! thank you SO much alexi *sarcasm*

  • Thanks, now I can play a new cool song to show off with my guitar)

  • O.O ...

  • screw the playing the nail polish is were it is at

  • what esp is he using here?

  • @thlemaxoslaiho its his signature guitar

  • That last riff is just a typical generic riff? lol

  • is that riff actually in any Bodom songs?

if not, then it should be!

  • so to resume, all the badass variations you can do starting from a powerchords shape. sounds awesome

  • @bhong32 <-- STUPID STUDENT

  • alexi makes trhis stuff look easy and to me its freakin hard lol and the ending chords soudned awesome and part of a song to.

  • @hijacker1234565 its actually not that hard. just practice the fingering slow.

  • @hijacker1234565 you should stop playing music then, because it seems you're too dumb for it.

  • @Arjozof im not that dumb im still learning how to play this stuff on guitar my memory isnt good at remebering things in children of bodom is the reason why i want to learn how to play guitar in you should think more before commenting on someone elses comment im not dumb!!!!!

  • @hijacker1234565 then you shouldn't learn CoB songs but some good music guitar-wise. Start with SLAYER

  • A lot of his chords I can't find in Guitar Pro, or any website, by the names he gives. I know these are little midget 2 string versions of things but it's confusing. I just think it's a metal terminology issue.

  • @Kjelldon It's because they aren't actually chords, they're harmonic intervals. Just get familiar with the interval names and how to apply them to what key you're playing in. for example when he says "minor 6th" if you were playing in E minor and you played E as your root note and C on top of it, you'd be playing a minor 6th. Hope this clears things up a bit

  • can this be played in E standard tuning? or just Drop C

  • @dieandgoaway Any Dropped tuning

  • alexi rules!

  • was the riff at 1:27 from anything?

  • You could just do both, self teach and have a teacher. Then you get the best out of both. I cant afford a teacher so im pretty much stuck to learning what i can from myself atm haha.

  • teachers are good. i've never had a lesson in person, but i'd love a good teacher. it's not about how much you struggle as an indication of necessity, it's about how much you gain from fresh perspective. randy rhoads took a lot of lessons even after becoming a guitar hero on the road. he took lessons in all the towns they stopped in...even though usually he was beyond the teachers. he definitely saw value in practical training. get a teacher if you're able, what's better, pride or skill?

  • men thats a fucking good advice, y the fuck thumbs down?

  • @alexisXcore93 haha thanks, i have no idea why they'd thumbs down it but hey, we're all entitled to our opinions. i'm guessing they're on the "pride" side rather than skill and they didn't like the idea they might be hindering their own progress :D notice the guy who said self-taught beats a teacher got thumbs up. even though most of the big names took lessons and are teachers themselves.

  • lol i like the way he sets up his hand for a chord he puts his whole body into it lol watch youll see :P

  • what?!!!! and the way he compose? he studied classical music for several years theory is water for him

  • Classical theory is actually fairly simple... a few cadences, and use the harmonic minor as your standard minor scale!

  • Classical theory is chock loaded with rules of how to use things. Harmonies, counterpoint etc... Only use certain scales in one direction, like descending harmonic minor and ascending melodic minor, or vice versa.

I don't know much classical theory, as I've based my theoretical foundation on more jazz-based music.

  • I know classical theory, and fugues and all that stuff has quite advanced theory, but there are no fugues or canons, and no counterpint, in COB music, instead using much simpler harmonic-minor and minor scales with no real rules involved.

  • then you need to listen to more of it dude. theres a lot of classical influenced stuff in their music

  • I've listened to, and still do listen to their music, and to date I haven't heard 1 truly classical section. Could you give me an example of where something classical occurs? I'm not trying to sound like a wise ass, just curious

  • The end of black widow is variated off of a Beethoven piece, but I know what you mean. Sure its classical influenced but as far as following strict classical theory, CoB doesn't do it. Hardly any bands do it for that matter.

  • His 9th symphony I looked it up =)

  • If you listened to Something Wild it should be obvious he knows theory.

  • You can be self-taught and know theory

just buy theory book , learning with the books doesnt mean ur not self-taught

  • but its easier to learn if u have a teacher thats why i try to get one

  • I find it better self-taught unless ur really struggling then u should get a tutor

  • I disagree, its best to get a good teacher as soon as possible, of course if you cant aford one then thats fine and some people do well teaching themselves but the overwhelming majority of the best have had a fair bit of training and thats not a coincidence.

Starting off self taught can lead to a large number of technique problems in the future which will be very hard to iron out. Also detailed theory is pretty tricky to learn from just buying a book, having someone to explain and clear up

  • anything you find confusing (and there will be ALOT you do) and motivating you to push on is extremely helpfull. Do you think you could learn enough maths to become a teacher just from reading text books without any help from another teacher? I doubt it.

The other issue with being self taught is you may think you are playing really well and thus dont need any help but the chances are you are messing up loads and are simply not experienced enough to realize these mistakes. 90% of people with

  • covers on youtube seem to fall into this category. They play with the backing track super loud to block out their playing yet seem to think they are amazing...most of these people seem to be self taught, a teacher would have pointed out their mistakes and told them how to get over them.

So yeah, it is possible to learn on your own but much MUCH better to learn with a GOOD teacher.

  • teachers are fine and all

especially if you find one that doesn't impart too much of their bias on you

in other words if they help you develop your own style then you are set

(never had a teacher like that :)

  • he studied viloin for some time plus thoery doesnt have a lot to do with technique when it comes to fingering and things like that

  • i agree

  • Alexi has classical background, of course he knows theory

  • i luv the way his guitar sounds. it's so thick!

  • "its so thick!"

    thats what she said.

  • lolz0rs

  • Do you have a life?

  • i doubt it since yours as thick as a penci

  • lamest joke evert

  • @ancook58 LMAO AHHAHAHA!

  • grindGore

  • I wanna see that riff at the end on their next album that was awesome!

  • alexi studied theory??? awesome i need to do same thing

  • yea i didnt know that either

  • MAN the last thing he plays is SICK

  • @DangerousMusicProd it is also called "musical kindergarten"

  • shut up

  • hahaha he plays root 5 twice!

I suppose he is going down the whole thing, Maj6th, Min6th, perfect5th, Flat5th etc.

    But still prety funny.

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!! that crazy Alexi....ROOT 5 TWICE!!!!!!!!!! AHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!! OH MY I CANT STOP LAUGHING ITS TOO HILARIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • roflmao

  • lol

  • Prolly spinning. Alexi is always drunk lol

  • actually during the lessons he was really sick
