@timothybrannigan - I DID TOO!!! Finally, REDEMPTION! I found someone else who was there! . People have never believed me when I told them. They say Queen would never open a theatre for someone like Mott. I think it was the first or one of the first shows Queen played in the US. They sure looked alot different than they did it later years. Boy would I like to get a bootleg of that show. I loved Mott and no one wanted to go w/me so I went myself. Do you remember the setlist? Cheryl
They were famous if at all, for one song and it was written by, produced by, and sounded like David Bowie it's the only way these spinal tapish losers could make it !
@lerxt42 posuers pretending to be rock stars an unfunky audience for a criminally unfunky band. I,ve heard bands playing high school dances with more originality.
@jsilence418 what do you mean spinal tapish losers you prat? i an hunter is an absolute genius and is still playing today and sounds amazing for A 70 year old bloke-
@tokaicarl Careful how you throw that word genius around, it may come back in the form of real genius and bite you on the ass !drop the poople were a mistake of the seventies, not unlike you!!
@jsilence418 i dont know what my profile age say qnd who fucking cares- what the fuck are you even doing on this page if you hate it- what do you think you are some fucking comedian or something? ive looked at your uploads and i thought so- boring fucking load of crap(apart from j beck)- ps leave jokes to someone whos fucking funny
Marian Gold from Alphaville (remember the song, "Forever Young"?) does a damn mean version of this one with his amazing voice, as well...from his So Long Celeste CD and AV's Dreamscapes collection. What year was this segment taped?
Great music... but the show? Which show? This is a fake TV live show, not a single note was live here, just canned music with mimicked playing..... maybe that explains why the audience is acting like a dead fish.
Really don't like the anti-german prejudice in some comments here... fake shows like this were very common all over the world in the 70ies.
@tomkittelkey The show is called Disco, however it is hosted by non other than comedian/actor Ilja Richter and he does sketches for over the 45-min limit.
Absolutely right. Hunter makes a good effort trying to make it appear that the little girl is singing but he can't pull it off, and the attempt to make her seem like she is filling in for the whole choir is laughable. But you are also right that this stuff was more the rule than the exception during the seventies.
The drummer is Simon Fox from Be Bop Deluxe, they borrowed him as Buff had I believe, Tonsillitis .. & it's definitely NOT Trudy, probably just a TV studio rent -a- miming singer type ....
I once seen one of my lover Stevens Hoople albums. I forget what one it was because I dont really give a shit. Well anyway it was the one that shows Ian Hunters empty bloody eyesockets. Freaked me out or some shit.
I see the audience is intrigued by Ian's ability to rock the soundstage blind like he is. Or they are trying to get a glimps of his empty eyesockets. I dont know but they seem uncomfortable being around the man.
3sat is a German tv station, so what else would you expect from the audience? :D
Mott the Hoople, the first band I was ever in to, the live album recorded at the Hammersmith Odeon, with Aerial Bender, what a classic, still got it in my collection, albeit scratched to bits. Great to see these old clips and many thanks for posting.
Won't you roll away the stone. Ancient burial tombs (similar to Jesus' tomb) had a heavy round stone in a detent to seal the entrance. Why be cold and so alone. They would roll away the stone to add another family member. Maybe the family members are rock and roll, and rockabilly. Don't you let it die. Reference to decline of rock during disco era? Maybe Mott instructed the pro-disco audience to be subdued? Just a guess, thinking out loud, don't hold me to it.
this is from a german tv-show called "disco". throughout the early 70s it came every saturday. back then it was the only show on german tv that featured international rock and pop acts. since the producers of "disco" didn´t knew that this kind of music was about fun it was part of the concept to let the audience sit still and be in awe.
if there is WHERE IS IT?...I'd KILL for that DK footage - never seen it, whether it was "Memphis" or ANY OTHER...what year was it and are you sure it exists?...also, I don't see any of it here on YouTube...please inform...thanks much...
I agree - no doubt, but mind you, the Mott Live version of ALWFM w/Aerial Bender blows the studio version w/Ralphs away in so many different ways imo...
as a DEVOUT and DEDICATED MottHead (my personal all-time favorite r&r band) I have often wondered why most critics and fans alike harken back to the roots of Mott with Ralphs and Verden - they were great then to be sure, and I realize that I am firmly in the MINORITY on this but Mott NEVER sounded better ANYWHERE at ANYTIME in their history than they do on Mott the Hoople Live 30th Anniversary with Aerial and Morgan Fischer (recorded in 1973)...do any Hoople fans out there feel the same?...
I agree!!!. I attended the Hammersmith Odeon Show in 1973, and they were absolutely mind blowing Live. Mind you, Ralphs is great on the Mott Album. His guitar interplay with Andy's Sax on All the Way from Memphis is, to my ears, a masterpiece!!!!
I've loved Mott since I was 10, Had all the albums, even Madcap Shadows. The stuff with Aerial Bender, what a name, was pretty good." Jimmy's feel down 'cause he ain,t got a pound". The Great White Wail kicked ass too!. I think Ian wrote Cleveland Rocks because I spent all my money on his albums. I had the book 'Diary of a Rock n' Roll Star" by Ian, which I got in Ireland, and had stolen in Cleveland. A cycle I guess, at least it was read.
I Love MOTT forever and I had the good fortune to see them perform at TOLEDO SPORTS ARENA in the early 70s I dont know what to make of the audience , maybe they are asked not to move around I've seen this before from these european show clips.
kids- forget the SAT prep. Spend your jr. high and teen years practicing your guitars, drums, voice. Make a contribution to art as these guys did. GREAT stuff!
One of Mott's best songs ever, and the band is having fun. HOW could the audience just sit there like that? Or---did someone slip downers into the punch? Incredible.
Very miserable audience - I mean come on I love this song how can it not make you want to dance!! In fact I can imagine myself dancing to this at my wedding [if I ever get married of course!!]
I first saw Hoople on ABC's "In Concert" with Uriah Heep on the same show. That was when they would "simulcast" in stereo over an FM station. That was a great show. I wish someone could unearth that one! I've got it on audio but would love to see the vid.
Well I guess that would place me in the pre-mid 20th century. Okay, I admit it was a cheap shot. Too lazy to be clever. Nice use of the term "Bluenosed." You must be living in the 18th century.

I think it's one of the road crew - not sure why Buff wasn't there at the time.
Also, it's not one of Thunderthighs or Lyndsey De Paul doing the "party rap" bit. Is it Trudi, Ian's wife?

Hmm, OK, well, you are remembering incorrectly.
The album was Shades of Ian Hunter, and his eye sockets are not empty.
The shades thing was done for a gimic/image and it stuck. His eyes are also sensitive to light.
