To the posters saying this could all have been done easier:

Keep in mind that this isn't a tutorial on how to achieve a certain result but on how to work with certain tools, so a slightly more complicated approach is sometimes better to show off all the features of the tool.

For Color Range Selection, why don't you just select the skin around then invert selection. lot easier no?

One thing I dislike with a lot of these, is that you make it far more complicated than needs to be. If your going to paint in a mask ANYWAY, just only paint in the mask from the start!

@TokyoZeplin Well, that wouldn't show how to use the command, also fixing up a mask is much easier than painting it from scratch

And in this case, painting in the lips would take far less time than this.

i could have gotten to this same point a lot easier just using good ol' regular masks!!! but it's interesting anyway!

You could do this job quicker and better with the "Extract filter"... (Missing in PS CS4)

@ANDiTKO it can be downloaded from adobe's site. Just google "adobe cs4 extract" and choose the first one called "Adobe Photoshop CS4 * Extract an object from its background"... You can download it from there (for me it was under the yellow box in the top right corner) :D
