Right at 3:28 you see the stick blade over the line and Nystrom's skates are still behind the blue line. I grew up a Flyers fan and I never bought that one. Onsides.
blown offside call by Leon Stickle and blown high stick call on the isles first goal...... back then any puck that was in the air and was struck out of the air was automatically considered a high stick no matter how high the stick was up........ so that should have went to game 7 and history could have been changed. i know that and im 13
@BirishB : The failed offsides call was NOT on the OT winner by Nystrom at 3:29 (as you mentioned). Linesman Leon Stickle failed to wistle an undoubted offside play on Duane Sutter's goal that was "set-up" by Goring and Gilles (at 1:00). Notice how the development of the play was conveniently left out in this video. Gilles entered the Flyer zone with the puck, passed it back to Goring, who was clearly out in the neutral zone and brought the puck back into the Flyer zone before passing to Sutter.
Thanks for the video highlights...it was fun watching Long Island succeed while I was growing up...People, watch the language - tact is best (none of us were even on the ice!).
HEY GUYS, not sure how old u are,but im old enuff to have seen em all & Habs of 70's were a bitch, but lets give due to the isles & their records, blackhawks guy here,no biases. most playoff series to win,4 in a row cups , etc,..bossy, trots, potvin, billy,..might have been toughest team to ever win cup just on resileincy. Great isles team. They stack up with the All -Time best, period. They had it all, offense, defense, & goaltending. Never forget them blowing out the OIlers & Gretsky,,,amazing.
First of all, you can't spell. Secondly, youre just another prick from the United States of Assholes. And thirdly, you claim they blew out the Oilers. Wrong. A blowout (by definition in hockey) is a victory by 5 goals or more. Look it up. The Canadiens were far superior to anything ever assembled. Even if you claim the Islanders were the best. Wrong again. You just got schooled bitch.
Start with Bossy who was the greatest goal-scorer in the history of the NHL...573 goals in 752 games...I believe he still holds the record for PPG in NHL playoff history. NO ONE and I mean NO ONE could put the puck in the net like Bossy. The guy retired at age 30!! If he played like today's players until he was 40, he might have scored 1300 goals. His average of .762 goals per game is the BEST IN NHL HISTORY!!!
The teams the Islanders faced in the 81 and 82 playoffs deserved to be there. Fair enough. But dont call them great teams. And dont think for a minute the Isles would have won in the 81 playoffs had they faced better opponents. The Canadiens had superior everything except offence. But defence wins in almost every series, so there you have it. And the Islanders couldnt win at the Montreal Forum. I remember some dumbass saying Nassau Coliseum was fort-never-lose. Wrong. Forum was. Look it up.
You CLAIM TO KNOW HOCKEY!!! Are you shitting me??? The Islanders teams of the early 80s were some of the best in NHL History. they didn't have 1st round byes and 2 series to win like the Habs.
I cant believe the Islanders didnt face a single top notch opponent in the 81 playoffs. Garbage Leafs garbage Oilers (at the time), garbage Rangers (of course) and so-so North Stars. Now only the idiotic phoney hockey fans will think Im dumb because they clearly fail to see that great teams have great reputations such as teams that win 1st place overall or the Stanley Cup. It doesnt matter if the Oilers beat the Habs in round 1, the Oilers didnt win anything until 84, so they werent "great"
And the Edmonton Dynasty was interrupted 2 years later when one of their defencemen (Steve Smith) scored a great goal in Game 7 vs Calgary (too bad it was the wrong net).
But don't forget your dynasty ended when Mark Messier scored a great goal in game 3 in Edmonton in the 84 cup final. It was a total, laughable rout after that. The Oiler dynasty had arrived!!
I watched this game in the Sears TV dept in Santa Barbara (with two other desperate hockey fans)...while I was there studying...for a Canadian who grew up with NHL hockey and watching the playoffs every year..it was absolute torture not be able to watch all the games...I think the american network picked up the HNIC broadcast for games 5 and 6...other than that there was no playoff hockey on TV in Southern California....unless the Kings were playing..a great moment in play by play for Dan Kelly.
I live in Florida and our CBS station showed a John Wayne Movie instead of this game, I had to listen to the game on ShortWave Radio.(There were no sportsbars in 1980.)
Isles got to two questionable goals that game...Potvins stick was clearly over his shoulder when he made contact with the puck...no reviews back then.
Not sure what you mean by two as you don't mention the second, but Potvin's stick was down when he made contact. He swung it from above the shoulder, but it was clearly aa goal.
I think Potvin's goal is debatable (he actually admitted to it a few years later in an interview). none the less the Iles were full value for the win...the other goal in question was Sutter's goal. As I recall, he appeared to be offside when he took the pass at the blueline...but then so did Lafleur when he took the game tying pass from Lemaire against the Bruins in 79. Good teams find a way to win and Al Arbour's teams did that for a good run of time....classy organization back then.
Great Job on the video! The good old days.

@ goIsles ... You fail, stupid. Read again. I said it wasn't offsides, you 'tard.

Ach! Offsides nothing ... pause this video at 3:29 and you can clearly see -- even from the odd TV angle -- that the puck beat Nystrom into the zone.

yah ok so what's you pt?

Thanks for posting.
I noticed that you did not mention the offsides that was not called by Leon Stickle and resulted in a goal. This play still haunts me 30 years later.
