Do NOT step up, that is a common mistake.Keep the back leg bent instead. I know it is much harder ;)
If you are stepping up when you are kicking, you are just telling your opponent, hey watch for my legs now.Back down ...now I'm punching. Try to always keep the head at the same height and your kicks are going to pass the defense much more often !
@alinor777 i know this kick from taekwondo.. we call it para palton.. and in fights its not usual to use it. the way you say it is another kick called jap palton in tkd. its used way more often in fights. so i wouldnt say this is an improper way of kicking either just another technique :)
@alinor777 unless you skip when you step, which makes it instantaneous. if you step right, the opponent hasn't the time to realize your kicking them.. this is the way it is tought, and what your doing works, but has less power and momentum.. its not a round kick, its a sliding round kick, if he didnt slide, it wouldnt be a sliding round kick..
When you're talking about kung fu/wushu in general there is one thing you must have that I feel isn't stressed enough. Conditioning. With good conditioning you can hit with almost any part of your body instep and shin included. And remember to condition properly. Shaolin does it, karate does it, Muay thai does it, jkd does it. I haven't seen one art that doesn't do it. It's almost the samething with every art.
Striking with the top of the foot is not only threatening to hyperextend your ankle, but it also absorbs the impact that is intended to go into your opponent.
Actually, I study under the corriculum of Si Gong Lee Chi Wai(Chung Wah shaolin kung fu in Toronto), and Chen Taichi from Tsung Si Joseph Zhonghua(He has a mountain!)
Anyways, I choose to believe a 31st generation shaolin monk, and grand master of the Lee family fist is correct in the proper form of a kung fu kick.
Jeezus, please don't try to learn from this video!
he said himself "This kick is like a slap"
Is it even sane to think of slapping someone with your foot during a fight?
Even if you could use slapping someone in the face as an effective attack, you would certainly never play chicken with your foot bones against his knee.
ok.. i can go with you for the first part of what you said, but yeah if i hit your knee at an angle with the instep of my foot(a low roundhouse instep kick)....well you probably will never walk right again....no disrespect intended, i just know what i know. you better have a wicked horse stance(IRON horse stance) to take a hit to the knee...almost any hit.
Thank you

lol yes a roundhouse instep kick though there is usually a more significant pivot with any kind of roundhouse.
remember people.....different styles, same technique,(maybe with slight modification),different name for that technique
ex:
chinese = leaopards paw (kung fu)
japanese = (shotokan karate) hurakan(spell check?)
other = half nuckle punch
different name same strike

Top of the foot? no no...
The surface of impact is your shin.
ShaoLimper 2 years ago
what are you practicing...muay thai? yes the surface of impact is the top of your foot with the toe's pointed down in sho-lin-do
