great video , espesially for people my lvl , helps alot when talented drummers like yourself takes time to explain for us not quite ready too see it all by ourselves. And offering too help at the end aswell :)
Really cool beat and a really cool drum tutorial, thank you, any other cool drum riffs, I am new to drumming , well 3 years and really appreciate you taking the time to slow it down and explain the process. also I am a lefty and play open hi hat.
HI Herl, even though you can't even know I'm posting here (or maybe you can from somewhere out there), I want to thank you for all you did for others. Like now I can play this cool groove, thanks to you! Cheers man, gonna have a drink on you tonight!
Your welcome man, I am glad it helped you get started. Once you get started with this sort of beat, you can pretty much develop it into your own thing.
OK, so I'm sitting here trying to figure out Ballroom blitz, and I'm struggling. I remembered you had a cover of it, and in the process of looking for it, I find this instructional--crazy. I'm off to spend hours(days) perfecting this Sweet cover. Thanks dude. Rock on!
@HerlPearl I know you weren't talking to me, but this is the best Ballroom Blitz drum tutorial on youtube right now :) Thanks, this song was causing me some PORBLEMS (those are much worse than problems). Now if I can just get the end part (it is weeeird).
Lol, I guess everyone likes that groove and it is FAIRLY easy once you know how. Getting it to flow naturally may require a little practice, but once you have it, it is no problem at all.
thank u very much herl. that really helped me. i was trying to make it sound like it and didn't know how. i thought u were doing some kind of magic. o.O lol
Well, I am glad to hear that it helped you. There is no magic; just a lot practice to get the right feel when playing the groove. Once the groove feels right, you can begin to make variations and things.
Yeah I've probably had about a total of 1 hour of drum experience, but I found it to not be as hard as I thought it would be. I will definitely try to get a kit at one point probably when I turn 16 and get a job since money a little tight right now lol. I'm planing on getting a Pearl set (I've always loved those the best). I'll be sure to make a video when I get one!
It is not hard getting a little good right away, which all drummers will testify. Then your development stops temporarily but it starts again, stops again, and so on for the rest of your career.
My very first kit was a Maxin by Pearl, then I got a kit called "Pearl Wood Fiberglass", then a Yamaha Power V Birch Custom, and now the Roland.
I have always been a Pearl/Zildjan hippie, then it changed to Yamaha/Paiste, and now it's Roland/Roland. I am still a Pearl man, thus my name :)
Yeah that goes with the development of guitar also it is on again off again. From the kits that I have played my favorites are Pearl and I've played a Roland kit...both very sweet, and zildjians are my favorite cymbals to play.
Thanks, Roberto. I am glad you find it interesting. If you play this on the guitar, the bass drum is your right thumb, left hand is your index finger, and right hand is your 2nd finger on those strings. Just an idea!
Thanks Stu. You know, no matter who wins the US election, I think the government wants a translator that knows the difference between left and right, hahaha.
Thank you very much -- One of the things I am aiming for is to "enlighten" non-drummers as well as helping other drummers. People will appreciate the music more if they are aware of the whole rhythmical aspect.
Looking at it now, I must admit that there is some level of self-irony but really; when I mixed up left and right, I HAD to make fun of it.
Very Good tutorial Herl These are very informative and you have a very relaxed way about you that makes it very comfortable to listen and learn from Thanks Gord
I hope, they are informative, but I am sure that I am relaxed. I just wing it, most of the time (and forget things, hahaha). The main thing is that someone out there can learn something, get a good idea, or otherwise benefit from the videos.
After shooting this one, I had 15 minutes of footage and decided to cut out most of the babble for two reasons; 1) I shouldn't waste the viewer's time and 2) YouTube only allows me to make 10-minute videos.
RIP Mick

Hey bro
I think, I did a very poor job of explaining it in this video... I have often thought about making it simpler.
Also, I think I am getting some of the bass drums wrong.
Still, I am not explaining how Mick Tucker played it because I simply down't know. I am trying to explain my approach to it.
If you want me to, I will try to do a better / simpler explanation on this one.

Hey man. Thank you very much, and you really should get a kit of some sort. No matter what you play, you'll get better at it once you know the drums.
