In 1982, we had the cutting edge Harrier, today we have the Typhoon, the most agile and highly advanced aircraft and unstable in a dogfight, in 82 we had Sidewinders, today and soon we'll have the BVRAAM Ramjet powered METEOR capable of Mach 4 and the largest No Escape Zone with the highest Kill probability and already called the "game changer". Argentina has not improved its hardware for a decent scrap since 82!

The Argentine pilots didn't know how to properly set the fuses on their missiles/bombs. Many of the bombs they dropped on the British fleet failed to explode. However they did serous damage to several British escort ships protecting the carriers. Interesting how the Argentines mostly used US military equipment.

Actually, the Americans provided us with the Sidewinder missiles. They would have helped more. The then US Secretary for Defense said that if Britain asked for it, they would have given it, even if we had asked fora carrier group. But, being the bulldogs we are, we refused all other help as it was a British afair.

@cwood4ever - Actually the US didn't allow it in the end, as the KC-135 aircraft had to be manned by US personnel and Reagan was not going to risk the US getting involved, so the RAF used their own from own airbase in South America.

The royal Navy is still one of the most advanced navies in the world - It's one of only three "blue water" navies on the planet (and the Russian navy ISN'T one of them). Our type 45 destroyers and type 23 frigates are easily just as good as their US counterparts. Our Vanguard class submarines are some of the best subs in the world and we're about to get two brand spanking new super carriers, so "perthetic" my arse.

@generalg12 - The won't scrap the type 45's, maybe some of the frigates but I doubt it. Usually cuts mean they don't build any new ships, not scrap already existing ones unless they are getting on a bit. Yes I have heard this about the carriers, but then a lot can happen in 9 years. We might find ourselves at war for instance and then everything changes with government spending.

To be fair, The Eurofighter Typhoon and the Tornado is superior to the Harrier now.Although both of those aircraft are not Vertical Takeoff aircraft they have better weapons and abillities than the Harrier. @honga We are currently building two super carriers but they're not needed. We now have a massive airbase on the Falklands capable of accomodating both the Eurofighter and GR4's. We have Type 45's that were asked to turn their radars off by the Americans recently as it was hindering the military excercise. We also have new SSN's. Astute has just come back from war games against Americans super SSN's and it completely outclassed them mate. Google 'HMS Astute returns to Clyde'

The Harrier just has the ability to take off and land vertically, like a helicopter. so it doesn't need a huge massive run way like most planes, so i still do not see how Venticinco De Mayo was a more powerful Aircraft Carrier.
