  • Hi Will, thanks for the great tutorial! I have two questions for you which concern things that sound different when you play it on the tutorial live to when I play it (or when the tabs are shown):

    (a) Something in bar 7 (theme B) sounds very different when you play it live (as opposed to the recording while showing the tabs). I don't think it's just a matter of speed and I cannot really figure out what happens.

(Sorry, not used to posting, there will be part II.)

  • Part II of the question:

    (b) More importantly, there seems to be a fairly noticeable transition piece you play live but left out in the tutorial: between the second repetition of theme A and just before theme C. This transition seems important, can you add it?

I apologize in case my ears fooled me -- otherwise I'd be happy for some answers! THANKS!

    Christina

  • @EdinAndCountin Well, two comments here: (1) When I made the video 4 years ago, there were both size & time limits on what you could post on YT. So, no time to include the little break within the 100Mb/10 min limitations of YouTube - really only time for the absolute basics of the tune. (2) When I play live at speed it's not easy to recreate the slow, clockwork-like playing required for tutorial purposes. Adrenalin kicks in and you're in performance mode... such is life. :-)

  • @HenfieldWill All right. Thanks!

  • this guitar instruction video is the best i've seen. looking for more.

  • Cheers Will... This is spot on mate.. im just getting to grips with it.. Your video has jumped my guitar progress from basically chord structures to fingerpicking in a matter of a few days.. i cant put the guitar down now.. :) top job..

  • @jason17182 Then it's all been worth while! Glad you found it useful. :-)

  • this is by far the most comprehensive guitar tuition video on the internet no matter the song!

  • Many thanks for putting this on. This is a piece I've always loved and, although I'm a keen guitarist, I don't read music so working it out was a bit beyond me. So to have it set out in such a clear way is great. I have had to adapt it slightly as I can't quite get my thumb around to hold down the E string on the first fret but it seems to work all the same.

Anyway, thanks again for helping spread the music of the great and now sadly late Davy Graham. It's much appreciated.

  • Thanks for this - you inspired me to post a video response of me playing this wonderful tune that Davy Graham gave to us - it was at a live gig just about four weeks after he died, I dedicated it to him then, and do so again now. Thanks again, Best wishes, Dave Merrick (Small Days)

  • @SmallDays1 Cheers Dave - well done! :-)

  • @HenfieldWill Thanks Will - appreciate your kind comment - thanks again for a great channel!

  • Excellent lesson - very clear instructions

  • i started to learn this yesterday, its going realy well atyally! i cant believe it!! x

  • I'm going to start learning this now, It's going to be easy thanks to Will :)

  • Half the time I'm screwing around with a blues or something the same thing happens to me.

  • Thanks Will, I never could get my head around tabs before watching this video. That little red arrow crawling across the bottom makes it look so easy. Now for my question. How do I get my thumb to reach around to press the low (top) E string?

  • @wordweaver58 Ah - the thumb! Not easy and depends on finger/thumb size. I can't do it as easily now as I used to be able to - age and stiffer fingers have taken their toll... It's possible to alter the fingering slightly and use a finger crossed over to the bass string. If I can remember it, I might tab it out sometime. :-)

  • An amazing lesson, not seem better!

  • This is a fantastic and really helpful video, i've been able to pick it up in a few days using this.

    Thank you.

  • have you got the tabs anywhere for the ending?

  • @cuteysar also i notice you didnt put the ending to theme A... is the tab available for that too?

  • Great video, thanks. I've been trying to learn this for a while now.

Bit stuck on a few things:

The open E bit at 6:13 (Theme A) isn't tabbed how you play it.

Theme B at 6:13 (open strings 3, 4 ,5 to E then Am) doesn't sound right and again is not how you play it.

The end at 8:36 isn't tabbed.

    Can you help with this.

I am almost there but for the issues above. It's like making a cake but forgetting the topping !!! OK but I know I could do so much better !!!

    Thanks again.

  • @muscatramble ...The end isn't tabbed but you can figure it out yourself. What Will Fly has done here is to lay the foundation for this song. If you learn all three themes, then you start to improvise on your own. That's what this song is all about...improvisation. Just look at some of the other people playing it on you tube. Particularly, look at the version by Penquinharry

  • pretty stupid they dont show the hammer on / off in the tabs

  • If you can't learn a guitar piece with this video...you just can't learn!

  • Would this be good for a college audition? I can play this pretty fluently, havn't done grades and I'm really worried what to do :/ Thanks for any answers in advance :/

  • @BStarkings I'd love to be able to advise - but I don't really know anything about college auditions, I'm afraid! Whatever - good luck! :-)

  • great tut, thanks

  • My late father used to play this so much. I thought for years I'd never find it let alone a tutorial. Learning to play this on his guitar has made me immensely happy.

    Thank you so, so much!

  • Will,

Thanks! I've been playing the guitar on and off since the early 1960s. I used to fake Paul Simon's version of this tune.

I put down the guitar for the last 10-15 years. Recently I picked it up again. I found this a few weeks ago .

I'm now at the point where I can play it nearly as you do at the end of the video, except for that transition you do between theme A and the others, and the end.

Did you ever do the tab for those? Several people seem to have asked.

  • Hey man im 14 and im learning this and i had so much fun honestly thank you so much this is the first song im trying to figure out and you taught it soo excelently its amazing how 160k ppl watched this video and you probaly got 50 thousand ppl into the guitar your so inspiring and u never know maybe out of those 160k ppl u tuaght 1 may become a musician cuz of this nd tht one might be me ; )

  • amazing tutorial, i spent ages trying with online tabs and didn't get anywhere 'til i found this

  • Great playing and tutorial, did you leave out the hammer ons and string bends in the tutorial? Many thanks Chris

  • I've nearly learned this now - thanks so much for the vid - really excellent. One question though - would you say it's easier to learn on a nylon stringed classical? I'm learning on a steel strung acoustic and I picked up a nylon string one the other day and found it much easier. Probably answered my own question there!

  • @iSteerpike Superficially - if you've been used to steel strings and then try a nylon-strung guitar - then, yes, it will seem easier at first. What you won't get, if you play a nylon-strung guitar as though you were playing a steel-strung instrument, is very much attack or volume. To get that attack and volume on nylon, you have to know how to pluck the strings - which needs a great deal of control and discipline. Worth checking your guitar setup - the action might be too high... :-)

  • Very well done.

  • Thanks.

The part I find really useful, is where you use the cross bobbing along the Tabs.

It allows one to pause and play the tabs after having just listened to your playing.

I haven't noticed that methodology in your other tutorials.

I learned to play Anji in a few days and I'm only a very average player

  • @macmaflon Ah - that bit! Yes - I've only used it once because - at the time - it was very labour intensive to produce (as were the chord diagrams). I might get round to improving the production method and making it quicker and easier to do. :-)

  • @HenfieldWill

I don't suppose you could find the time to put the bobbing cross into some of your other tutorials.

  • @HenfieldWill

I don't suppose you could find the time to put the bobbing cross into some of your other tutorials.

  • @macmaflon

I remember guys playing this in folk clubs way back in the 60s. And I see you have had 158,000 views. Amazing that it is still so popular,

    You teach it very well.

    all the best

    Graham Forbes

  • @GRM382

    Graham

I wish it were me doing the teaching. I am a mere student who has found the Anji tuition method very useful indeed

  • Thank you so much for all your work posting these instructions. I am so inspired:) You have given me a lot to work on. It is nice to have you as a guitar teacher, even though I can't sit with you. I only wish I had not waited until I was 59 to start this journey (61 now:), but what a fun time it is, and you have offered so much for me to do:)) I wish I could sit down and buy you a beer.

  • @hiaway Glad you're finding the stuff useful. When I started paying, 45 years ago, I had some good friends who taught me a lot - time to pay back some of it... :-)

  • Thanks for this video.

This is a really excellent tuition method. Do you have other lessons in the same vein and, or, do you know of a site on the web which uses the same methods

  • @macmaflon I've several tuition videos on my YT channel which use fretboard diagrams and slo-mo as well as live action. Just go do down the list of my stuff and see if anything interests you... :-)

  • thanks excellent tutorial, really nice, clearly explained and made easy to follow.

    Thanks again.

  • That was brilliant - I have wanted to play Anji for so long but all the tabs I've looked at previously havn't sounded right.

    Thanks - great video.

  • Thank you so much for this excellent tutorial. I discovered this song through Will Hodgkinson's book 'The Guitar Man', it was that book that made me pick up the guitar but I never thought I'd be able to play anything like Anji - your tutorial has proved me wrong - I can now play it reasonably well! Once again, thank you.

  • Great tuturial - been trying to work this out for years and got the jist of it in one evening with this. Thanks!

  • thanks for that, i unfortunately i cant find the tab on the website, would help a lot to print that out other than looking at the video.

  • @snorrevonflake It's on the "tabs" page - left-hand column, 5th file up - "Angi"... :-)

  • @HenfieldWill sorry for wasting your time, i think i did a text search on the site but most somehow have missed it. thanks

  • Can you post the tab for the links inbetween the 3 themes and the ending? Thanks!

  • Hey thanks a lot for teaching this great tune. I really enjoy playing it.

  • i have to say that version is really easy

and don't sound so good like others

  • @federfuchsCh Well, it's the original, not the flashier version by Bert Jansch... Glad you find it easy.

  • whats the real spelling of the name cause i have seen 3 is it Anji, Angi or angie?

  • @Redlabel0 The ORIGINAL spelling - and I have the original EP disc on which it first appeared - is "Angi". :-)

  • Thankssssssssssssss !!!! that helped me a lot !! wonderful video!

  • Thankssssssssssssss !!!! that helped me a lot !! wonderful video!

  • This is a serious afford in putting into a free guitar lesson. Thanks for your time.

  • One of the best tutorials i've seen. Thanks very much for putting the effort in.

Learning it now :) Then just to start really attacking the guitar Bert Jansch style!

  • Theme B reminds me of the Queens of the Stone age riff to nobody knows. Wonder if they were DG fans.

  • Absolutely amazing tutorial! I have tried to play angie for ages and in the first hour of watching this I started to get it. Many thanks!

  • @TheNakedQuack Glad it worked for you! :-)

  • this video is what i learned the song from completely, nothing else, great video and thanks.

  • many Thanx wonderful straight forward, to the point , you inspire confidence

well done more should follow you great example

  • Comment removed

  • if all internet guitar lessons where like this we would all be jimi hendrix lol

  • You're a very good teacher. The video is very helpful. I'll check out your web site too. Thanks.

  • sweet-

  • You just thought it to me. Thanks!

  • Just happenned upon your video: great tutorial. I alway thought this piece was a DADGAD piece but noticed on your TAB that you are playing it in standard. Did you re-arrange it for standard tuning as I've heard a lot of modern guitarists are doing that to Davey's stuff, or was it originally written in standard (before Davey started experimenting with alt tunings)?

  • @hoplitekris It was written and played by Davy in standard tuning. :-)

  • i just tried to play by theese tabs and them to add some cool stuff... i don't know why but i couldn't play the same as in this lesson and now it sounds weard :D

  • thanks, absolutely stunning tutorial, also do you by any chance have tabs for "40 ton parachute" another masterpiece by davy graham?

  • Glad you found it useful. 'Fraid I don't have tabs for 40 Ton - never tried to play it! :-(

  • Will Henfield?? it must be the excitement. Will Fly of course.

  • Oh sweet Lord I have long searched and lo Will Henfield appeared to me this very evening.

Wonderful stuff. Love this lesson, the website, the DADGAD info etc. Have now got a boost to try again after about 10 years. Ta muchly.

  • Cheers man, your tutorial had given me the confidence to play similar pieces with basslines running alongside the melodies. I can play all the the three themes, i'm just trying to work out how to link them together now. Thanks

  • I also notice with theme B, when you play, you are adding some extra stuff with your pinky. So, when I play theme B according to the tab, there's something missing. Suggestions?

  • One of the problems when playing a piece like Angi "naturally" and playing it as learning demonstration is that the "demo" version tends to be a little stiffer and simpler than the "natural" version. The purpose of this video is to help people get the basics - something on then which to build by listening to the original. There's also a subtle swing to the original which, frankly, is impossible to capture exactly with tab or music... :-)

  • I also noticed the same as boomshanka9. I was practicing the Theme A and then I realized that what I played didn't sound at all like the original one, but I'm glad you tabbed it this way because once you learn the basics it is easier to add that little something that it is missing - in this case the swing. Sometimes I see tabs that have everything in them, all the small pick scratches and feedback noises and they are so very difficult to learn if you can't simplify them.

    Thanks!

  • Great lesson, but except for theme A the TAB is not exactly the same as what is played live. I like the live version better than the TABs so i had to see this vid over and over to learn how to play it the same way as shown. I think i succeeded quite well and i will keep practising this song untill i can play it with my eyes closed :-) Tanks!!

  • I'm re-doing the tab at the moment... watch this space... :-)

  • Did u make this instructional video? Cos i would love to buy the whole thing!

  • I did make it. The video is available on a DVD - check my website for details... :-)

  • Thank you... great playing, and great instruction.

  • Thanks! You've inspired me to get back into guitar playing after 4 years out. Keep up the good work and nice one for being so responsive

  • Agree with Michael56799. Love the tutorial but it's really frustrating me now that I can't play the full version. Please teach us the variation on theme A

    Cheers

  • I'm currently working on a fuller tab version of the tune which shows all the slight variations in the original. Watch this space - I hope to get it done in the next few weeks. :-)

  • K-PO

  • Great lesson, cheers! What are the notes you play the end of theme A in the faster version at the end of the lesson? They sound great, just cant figure them out!

  • Hi!

I didn't heard this nice song before I bought Guitar Man by Will Hodgkinson: what a nice suprise!!

I'm going to learn this song while I read the book (obviosly not at the same time!! :-) )

Thanx man for this useful guide, very nice job for me!!!

  • thanks! nice tutorial. i start practice that later.

  • Cheers for the encouragement and advice. Very astute i think!

  • Great tutorial- actually going to have a bash. Still a bit intimidated tho lol!

  • Relax - take your time - a bit here and a bit there - and it'll all come together. :-)

  • I first heard of this song reading Guitar Man by Will Hodgkinson so last night spent all night listening to different versions on Youtube then found this tutorial.

So now I'm getting to grips with actually playing it - the tutorial really demystifies the song and I'm actually getting somewhere (it sounds so much complicated than it actually is)! This is my first ever go at fingerstyle after 20 years of playing the guitar so proof it's never too late to learn.

    Thanks , appreciate your effort!

  • Good man - glad you found the tutorial useful. :-)

  • I'm reading that book at the moment, very funny :o)

  • That's so funny! I am reading that book right now too and found out about the song for the first time as well. Great book and what a wonderful song. I can't believe I'd never heard it before. I am plugging away at it right now, very slowly, but you're right, it's simpler than it seems. This is a most useful tutorial!

  • Hi Will just stumbled upon your excellent website via youtube! Our paths must have crossed in those early years!

I too bought a 1964 Epiphone Texan in 1966 and have gigged with it ever since - a testament to its build quality!

    cheers

    Wizz Jones

  • Hi Wizz - great to hear from you - and good to see (from your website) that you're still doing great gigs. I used to see you now and then at the good old Cousins - seems like a long time ago now! Keep on rocking - let me know if ever you get to Sussex... :-)

  • what happened to the original recorded version? I cant find it anywhere on here anymore! I used to listen to it all the time...

  • It's at: watch?v=92qxDCah2ag

Put this in after the basic YouTube URL

  • im looking for Davey playing it....

  • Ah - gotcha! I can't recall it being on YouTube. :-)

  • idk maybe im crazy...I swear i think it was tho. Ah bother

  • Thank you so much for this video. Davy is amazing and you break this down so well for us.

  • Really great video! Thanks a lot.

  • this helped me so much! thanks :]

  • So clear and well explained , thankyou for genorously sharing your hard won skills .

  • Thank you for a very clear and effective tutorial!

  • Absolutely brilliant, such an enjoyable song to play, such concise and clear instruction Thanks!

  • Thanks for posting this tutorial - it's really well done. One request... Could you post a more complete tab that includes the small embellishments, and the ending, as in your final run through. I can't find the classic Davey Graham tab anywhere else.

  • Hi Will, I second what was written here by "nblott"... I have been practicing this for a while and have a lot of it down, but can't quite figure out some of the theme transitions and the some of the embellishments. Any additional help would be TRULY appreciated. Regardless of any additional help you may provide, I am deeply thankful for all the great work you've done already.

  • Hey Will, this is the best tutorial I've ever seen - you're an angel for for helping us learn this beautiful song. Just wondered if you have any tips as to how to streeeetch my thumb onto the 6th string? I have a classical guitar with a wide neck! Thanks, Rachel

  • thanks very much for this! ive not been playing guitar long but you made it so easy to learn this song

  • I was an avid folk clubber in the 60s and this was the test piece for aspiring guitar players,if you could play this you'd arrived.I can't remember hearing Davy play it but almost certainly heard Bert Janch at Cambridge. I bought a guitar a few years back and struggled to play it at all and was about to give up when | found your video, a month later and I have almost 'got' Angie. Thank you so much for a great lesson.

  • Well done! And my pleasure. I played with Davy few times in the late 60s, at the Cousins, and he was a true gentleman and a man of genius. :-)

  • Best lesson on youtube, great teacher!

    thank you so much

  • This is such a great lesson - thank you so much! :-)

  • that recorded! A string is really bugging me

    but the live sounds nice

  • this is an excelent lesson like everyone said, i learned how to play this in 2 minutes! Thank you very much!

  • This is one the best guitar lessons I've seen on Youtube. You've come up with the perfect combination of diagrams and instruction that make it very easy to see and hear what you're doing and how you're doing it. Thanks you for taking the time to create and post it.

  • brilliant lesson

  • Thanks for sharing, very nice.

  • a great instructional video!

  • this is a great tutorial. I personally play F with the thumb 90% of the time, but not in this song! Mind you I play a version of Anji with all the best bits from everybody else's versions!

Not keen on the sound of your guitar... I mean, each to their own but piezo... ugh! ;-)

  • Brilliant, thanks for sharing!

(it seems Youtube actually has a purpose other than wasting my time... shocking!)

  • Hey Will - Just wanted to say thanks! This video is **excellent** I can't wait to show it off to my guitar teacher.

  • My pleasure - go on - be a show-off! :-) Will

  • Excellent, thanks for sharing.

  • excellent, thanks !

  • Thanks for posting.

  • this is a fantastic video, can you do more davy graham? I really want to learn leavin' blues.

  • Extremely educational. Thanks alot!

  • I have to say that this is one of best formatted tutorials I have seen on the web, let alone youtube. The way it is broken down is simple and ingenious. I picked it up in no time at all. I wish other people had the foresight to teach in such a simple way. No messing around, just useful. If I had a hat, I would tip it.

  • Thanks JP - I'll consider it tipped! :-) Will

  • An Excellent lesson Thank you..

  • Very useful!

That's a gorgeous sounding guitar by the way.

  • The guitar's a limited edition Martin XC1T. :-)

  • Thank you!

  • very helpfull. Davy grayhams version is much better than the bert jansch version. thanks!

  • THanks!!

  • thanks a lot. great video and lesson i hope u decide to put up more videos like this.

  • Great lesson. Much gratitude for helping.

  • I'm very glad I found this lesson - thanks so much for taking the time to make the video. I'm determined to practise and practise this until I can get it cracked!

This video shows how relatively simple the song can be to play - although im not finding it easy! - which is great as I initially looked at plain tabs and couldn't make sense of it.

    Thanks again!

  • Dear Will thank you for posting this fantastic video it's with complete sadness that I am writing this as I have just found out Davy Graham has passed away. I knew very little of Davy until only a few months ago and since then I have really been listening to his work and your video has been excellent as I have seem to have picked up Anji very quickly from it. Thank you again and RIP Davy.

  • Glad it's been of use! I was quite upset when I heard of Davy's death. I had the good luck to jam with him occasionally, at the Cousins in Greek Street in the mid-60s, and found him a kind and considerate (and brilliant) character. His later work was a mixed bag, for reasons we all know, but in his early days he was the outstanding guitarist of his generation. RIPS indeed... :-)

  • I'll second MancBluesman's comment - Thank you, Will. And rest in peace, Davy. You'll be remembered.

  • I've played "Angi" since the late 70's - moving closer to the orginal DG version in the past few years. I certainly appreciate your analysis and the excellent production on the video - especially the final full-speed version. I've certainly learned from studying your version and my version will certainly change as a result! Thank you for so generously doing the work to post this.

  • Glad you're getting into the original version - bit by bit! Bert's version is fun, but I've always loved DG's original. A sad loss that he passed away on 15th... Will

  • Great job. Many thanks.

  • Mr Fly,

Thanks so much for posting this lesson. I find it so accessible even though I have been playing guitar for 4 months. I never heard of Davy Graham until I read "Guitar Man - A Six String Odyssey" by Will Hodgkinson. I live in NYC so I am grateful for being exposed to so many other guitar players through this book from around the world. 'Anji' is a beautiful song and thanks to your excellent teaching methods some day I can make it my own. Everyday is a school day :-)

  • that's a GREAT lesson! thanks so much for posting this!

  • Hello Will I've watched your videos on youtube and really enjoy them all - great playing!!! The method you use in this instructional video is brilliant and as a 'not quite beginner' a fantastic help in bringing my playing forward. I do find the guitar hard work ( I practice two to three hours a day) but the rewards, well we all know about that. What I most appreciate most is the time and effort you take in producing videos like this to benefit other people. A big thanks from me to you,

  • Glad you liked it and found it useful - that's what I hoped when I made it! :-) Will

  • best lesson plan on site!

looking forward to delving in,thankyou for sharing...

  • Hi whats the tab for the little twiddle you do at the end of part A (in the full video).

    Great Tutor Video..Nice One

  • Yes, I'm aways getting asked for the "little twiddle"! I'll get round to tabbing it one day = promise. :-)

  • yes please, i have the same question and i´m looking forward to see it! Thx (-:

  • hehe i was about to ask the same thing! :)

i've just finished to play the song right like it was in the video (there are 2 notes in the tab that are different), i'm trying to find out how to do the little twiddle and it's exhausting :(

    thanks for the effort mate!

  • Hi Mr.Fly

Thank you for accepting my videorespons. And thanks alot, again, for this wonderful teaching method! seriously the best on youtube, well atleast for my self. I have tryed many times to understand tablature\fredboard, and now i understand it,

I will do as you say! PRACTISE PRACTISE & PRACTISE!

  • i really love this teaching video, too!

but i printed out the tabs from your website and theres sth different: In theme three is after the high e a low g and not a low e. so whats right?

i think the e sounds better, but i don't really know.

  • ups, i mean theme B

  • Mmm... I'll check the tab out and let you know! :-)

  • thanks a lot! 'cause i really love this song :-)

  • Hey awesome vid

best Guitar tutorial video ive seen in a while

    good job

    keep up the good work!

    thanks.

  • hey this vid is simply amazing! keep up the good work!

  • wow, thanks alot mate! ive nailed it sown, finally. best how to vid on youtube, so i subbed ;O) thanks again

  • Glad you nailed it - that's why I produced it! :-) Will

  • Theme B reminds me of that Queens of the Stone Age track..

  • great video, in the beginning you show the actual song, is that particular one on youtube anywhere?

  • I don't think the actual Davy Graham original is on the Tube. I believe my version (URL in More info - top right - is perhaps the nearest to the original that you'll find. But check it out - new things are being added every day! :-)

  • ooh ya i wathced that one, its a great piece, you did a very good job of covering it

  • You are far too modest Will. This is the piece that made me start learning the guitar at 30 years of age, but I thought it would be beyond me so I never tried it, until now. And I can play it now after a few days. You are a brilliant teacher. Everytime I play it you will be fondly remembered. Thank you so much. Keep up the great work!!!
