You cant improve on this recording! Ive listened to Tenors all my life, and as a musician myself I love Gigli but Jussi sings this song so beautifully! He was underrated by British audiences when he came to the uk.
I like to believe that Adolphe Adam must have let out such a huge sigh of sheer joy when he heard this sung by Jussi! This has to be the ultimate healing balm for tired and sore ears. Thank you inca48 for this sublime upload!
I AGREE.He was absolutely wonderful! I first heard him sing this on a library album of opera singers singing Christmas, when Mom was alive, and we both agreed that "the Swedish guy" was the best ever. Lilli
I think that this is the best version of this epic song. Best tenor of the "nordmen" (past and present). This recording is The One that others should compare to. If it's necessary., but anyway Happy Holidays for everyone!
There are no other "nordman" (past or present), who can sing this like J.B. did. Great song and even more greater tenor. Combine these two and that's pure classic. Happy Holidays for everyone..!
The one and only J.B. The great tenor. A good example of how to sing this song. It's a shame that so many performers have ruin this classic tune. But not Jussi, no never.!
If someone ever consider to sing or make a record of this song. Listen to this version first and then consider it again. Because I think that no one could even get close to J.B. 's version of O Holy Night. And everybody else should leave this classic song alone, 'cos so many performers have ruin it allready. This is the one and only J. Björling, great tenor!

With all respect to Andrea, Jussi, among other things,is multi tonal and it suits this song excellent. This factor dominates other interpreters of this beautiful piece. The swedish translation also vocalises the song in a positive direction. It seems that Jussi Björling and this song in swedish met for a long lasting glorious historic reference.
@MsRuthes Yes...they are probably the same ones who think Il Divo and The 10 Tenors are the best ever also. It's a sign of the world we live in. Justin Beiber gets 50 million hits and Jussi Bjoerling only gets 356,122. Just goes to show that quantity is definitely no measure of quality. Merry Christmas!
Splendido! Voce unica ed inconfondibile quella di Bjorling. Un timbro che tocca il cuore.
Con quella del grande Caruso, a mio avviso, l'interpretazione più bella. Grazie per averci concesso questi bellissimi video. Cordiali saluti. Wilhelm.

This is my all-time favourite christmas hymn and have only heard it sung in English. But this is absolutely sublime.I've not heard of this singer, but would happily listen to his magnificent voice again and again!
Tomorrow, I am cleaning out Mom's room, she died in October. Not something I really want to do, so just trying to do the Ave Maria hymn that gives me so much comfort and the operatic stuff that Mom loved so much. I usually do not like old recordings, sometimes too finger nails on the chalk board for me, This is a phenomenal recording, Mom Loved Jussi Bjorling's voice. Sorry I missed this growing up. Stunning - this piece is stunning. The power in his voice at 1:12 is absolutely breath taking. I feel my bone marrow shake when I hear this recording. Thank you Jussi. This is a gift from God through you.
I've listen to him every night before Christmas Eve in more than 40 years. I'm moved to tears every time by the beauty of his voice. He was truly the greatest tenor ever.
I've listen to him every night before Christmas Eve in more than 40 years. I'm moved to tears every time by the beauty in his voice. He was truly the greatest tenor ever.
This is a thrilling performance of a Christmas favorite, and the power with which he ends it is pure delight. Now, having heard this, check out his tender reading of Rachmaninoff's "In the Silence of the Night".....the comparison offers a hint of Jussi's range and artistry! I was fortunate to have heard him sing both live at Orchestra Hall in Chicago in 1958.
No other singer ever recorded has this influence on my Christmas feelings. I am freezing down my back, tears are pressing, and I feel blessed that I can hear a voice like Jussi Bjørlings. THE Christmas song, period.
This is THE Christmas song. I have heard almost all versions of it sung by the likes of Lanza through to Il Divo and whilst they all have merit, this one gets me every time. Extraordinary!
@SMOOTHEST10: My favorite version. I prefer it to Caruso's. It's funny how some people are raving about Josh Groban and the like after listening to their versions of "O Holy Night." They have no idea how mediocre these cutesy popular singers are and no idea how great the greatest tenors were.
@SMOOTHEST10 I too have heard many wonderful singers perform this wonderful song but none have such impact as this. Bjorling is in a class by himself.
@Johnx88 I totally agree he is the best tenor ever! at the end when he opens his mouth and throat and hits the high C it brings tears to my eyes like no other.
@Cirebeer If you love this you'll be equally impressed with his voice and artistry as displayed in Rachmaninoff's "In the Silence of the Night"....brings tears to my eyes!
@Heinalicious sorry to say that you are wrong: Johan Jonatan "Jussi" Björling was born in Borlänge, Dalarna, Sweden, in February 1911. The midwife's register shows he was born on 5 February; however, the church baptism records erroneously show 2 February, and this was the day on which he celebrated his birthday throughout his life.
He could have sung it in the original language which is French, or in Italian or in French or in English. But he was Swedish and recording it for a Swedish public. Personally compared to the original French I regard the English words odd and not completely logical.
I personally regard Björling as the greatest tenor ever. He heralded in a new singing approach combining the best of the German and Italian techniques.
Heinalicious, you can't be more wrong. Johan Jonatan "Jussi" Björling was born in Borlänge, Dalarna, Sweden, in February 1911. The midwife's register shows he was born on 5 February; however, the church baptism records erroneously show 2 February, and this was the day on which he celebrated his birthday throughout his life. During the night of 9 September, whilst asleep at his summer house on Siarö, he suffered a fatal heart attack which cut short his life at 49 years of age.
In addition, I have listened to pavarotti and Mario Lanza and while they are excellent, I believe Bjorling has the finest and most reverent interpretation.
Brilliant, thank you. I'd never heard of him but I'll not forget his name, now

Merry Christmas.

SMOOTHEST10 1 year ago 30
@SMOOTHEST10: My favorite version. I prefer it to Caruso's. It's funny how some people are raving about Josh Groban and the like after listening to their versions of "O Holy Night." They have no idea how mediocre these cutesy popular singers are and no idea how great the greatest tenors were.
wiseroldfart 1 year ago
@SMOOTHEST10 I too have heard many wonderful singers perform this wonderful song but none have such impact as this. Bjorling is in a class by himself.

This is THE Christmas song, I've listened from Mario Lanza to Il Divo sing this and this version gets me every time. Joyeux Noel to one and all.

Jussi Björling is the best. What strength.
stensopp666 1 year ago
@Heinalicious sorry to say that you are wrong: Johan Jonatan "Jussi" Björling was born in Borlänge, Dalarna, Sweden, in February 1911. The midwife's register shows he was born on 5 February; however, the church baptism records erroneously show 2 February, and this was the day on which he celebrated his birthday throughout his life.

@Heinalicious You are quite wrong; Jussi was born in Borlänge, Sweden and only something like 5% of the Finnish people speak Swedish.
johx88 1 year ago
Yes it is in Swedish.
