  • Brilliant, thank you. I'd never heard of him but I'll not forget his name, now

  • 4:18... just godlike!

  • beautiful--sung like only a tenor can sing this... and not just any tenor.

  • You cant improve on this recording! Ive listened to Tenors all my life, and as a musician myself I love Gigli but Jussi sings this song so beautifully! He was underrated by British audiences when he came to the uk.

  • if you dislike this you dont know how to love

  • This is not just Oh Holy Night. It's THE Oh Holy Night!

  • This is the single best vocal performance I have ever heard.

  • Merry Christmas from Hawaii

Finska mormor gav Johan namnet Jussi.

  • Incredible. That is all.

  • Beautiful!!! That is the most appropriate word that seems to describe this singing.

  • Truly wonderful this is Christmas for me Thanks Jussi

  • The advertisement before the video ruins the entire experience.

  • IMNSHO Bjorling was the greatest tenor in the 20th century.

  • I like to believe that Adolphe Adam must have let out such a huge sigh of sheer joy when he heard this sung by Jussi! This has to be the ultimate healing balm for tired and sore ears. Thank you inca48 for this sublime upload!

  • If your tears don't well up and you get goosebumps at 4:13, you are dead inside.

  • I AGREE.He was absolutely wonderful! I first heard him sing this on a library album of opera singers singing Christmas, when Mom was alive, and we both agreed that "the Swedish guy" was the best ever. Lilli

  • The tenor of all tenors!

  • I think that this is the best version of this epic song. Best tenor of the "nordmen" (past and present). This recording is The One that others should compare to. If it's necessary., but anyway Happy Holidays for everyone!

  • There are no other "nordman" (past or present), who can sing this like J.B. did. Great song and even more greater tenor. Combine these two and that's pure classic. Happy Holidays for everyone..!

  • And this is recorded in a time where you couldn't really temper with the recordings. This is how he sounded. Amazing.

  • The one and only J.B. The great tenor. A good example of how to sing this song. It's a shame that so many performers have ruin this classic tune. But not Jussi, no never.!

  • If someone ever consider to sing or make a record of this song. Listen to this version first and then consider it again. Because I think that no one could even get close to J.B. 's version of O Holy Night. And everybody else should leave this classic song alone, 'cos so many performers have ruin it allready. This is the one and only J. Björling, great tenor!

  • Jussi on aina huippu! maleenax

  • Proud to be swedish like Jussi..:)

  • I have to agree with PSPSM, this is the best I have found.

  • @MsRuthes

With all respect to Andrea, Jussi, among other things,is multi tonal and it suits this song excellent. This factor dominates other interpreters of this beautiful piece. The swedish translation also vocalises the song in a positive direction. It seems that Jussi Björling and this song in swedish met for a long lasting glorious historic reference.

  • The one and only. RIP

  • @MsRuthes Yes...they are probably the same ones who think Il Divo and The 10 Tenors are the best ever also. It's a sign of the world we live in. Justin Beiber gets 50 million hits and Jussi Bjoerling only gets 356,122. Just goes to show that quantity is definitely no measure of quality. Merry Christmas!

  • The best ever. Jussi was fantastic.

  • To me the song has a therapeutic effect. My mood change to the better every time I listen to this song and Jussi. Just amazing :-)

  • I love it !!!

  • Splendido!

Cordiali saluti. Wilhelm.

  • What a voice! Wow

  • simply beautiful

  • Never, never a more perfect tenor than Bjorling. Thanks for this.

  • I love this version, its nice and powerful like this song should be. Get outta here with those soft versions. Wish it was in English though.

  • perfection

  • the perfect piece to lead the angels when accompanying Hamlet to heaven

  • @asdfasdf862 That is so true

  • takk for din vakkre stemme jusse- alle engler i himmlen lærer å synge hos deg nå!!!!

  • My dear Jussi...!!! Thank you for your divine voice with which I have been able to overcome so many adversities, with which I have been able to find so huge consolations. This song and your nessun dorma as well as the aria of prince Igor,.....I will have them by my side even in the grave. Truely thank you.

    deskfruit from Korea.

  • mycket vacker! :)

  • DALARNAS STOLTHET!

  • It's just not christmas if I've not heard Bjørling sing O Helga Natt.. So beautiful!

  • Sometimes the creator of our Universe produces a human who touches perfection .

This is as near perfection as is possible - through the medium of great singing .

    Truly powerful & humbling .

To those 10 individuals who posted a dislike - I would suggest they

consider the old adage - ' CASTING PEARLS IN FRONT OF SWINE '

  • What a magnificent rendition......It simply doesn't get any better than this.

  • the last christmas my dad was aive , he spent in the hospital . I went to see him christmas night and he told me george gelinick was going to play this on his vocal scene radio program. I recorded it that night, and my dad died the following year. it remains one of the great recordings of all time , by probably the most perfect singer of all time,. God bless us all.

  • Oh My......Outstanding!!

I thougt the best verison of this magnificent Qristmas song was by Ms. Sarah Brightman....Until I learned about Jussi Björling......

This is as close to perfection, it can ever be..... What a power- what a voice.....

I thank you Jussi- If you can hear me from your heaven.....

  • Perfection indeed. Jussi how great thou art, thank god for recordings. I cannot believe how wonderful this is !!

  • Fantastiskt. Underbart.

    Agnetha, 16

  • I only ever heard his voice after getting the 1956 version of La Boheme (the one Llloyd-Webber copied to create 'Phantom of the Opera', and he ISbetter than Pavarotti, Lanza, etc

  • I'm violating my "no christmas songs outside December" rule by listening to this & I don't even care.

  • @Caiaphas18

    Jag med.

  • ...This song reminds me of a friendship of mine.. Or once had..

Sad how such good things can end so tragically... Even so, one may terminate that friendship, even though the other dosen't wish it to be so... At least this beautiful and powerful voice can sooth old wounds.

    God bless you all.

  • I was introduced to this wonderful voice by a dear old friend, who has now retired, but I play it to bring back the good times. I loved the comment "Added to Gods iPod favourites"

  • This is the version my family always plays at cristmas. I have been growing up with this. Jussi is the greatest.

    cheers from Stockholm, Sweden

  • Wonderful singer and wonderful renditon!

  • 4:18... GET IT JUSSI! So good

  • Å, jeg elsker Jussi! Den største tenor noensinne. Det sier jeg, en norrman. Jussi er unik!

  • Nothing can be compared to this! Amazing!

  • We will never hear another tenor like Bjoerling again - that tone is unique.

  • The voice of God

  • even though it is nearly Easter I need my Jussi "fix"!! this is the most wonderful version of Holy night I have ever heard, simply breathtaking!!!

  • @lutomsky oh so right its now june!! isnt it gorgeous (i'll save meself till december now!!)

  • Absolutely beautiful, even though its nearly Easter I need my jussi fix!! wonderful.

  • Absolutely beautiful, even though its nearly Easter I need my jussi fix!! wonderful

  • How I wish,

How I wish you were here...

  • This is my all-time favourite christmas hymn and have only heard it sung in English. But this is absolutely sublime.I've not heard of this singer, but would happily listen to his magnificent voice again and again!

  • There are 8 people who are tone deaf that disliked this....

  • @happywealthyme

I like that comment :-) That is a very good one.

  • @happywealthyme I'm also tone deaf but i just love this!

  • @happywealthyme or no taste at all for REAL tenors. considering IL DIVO tenors.... plz

  • well said @happywealthyme

  • I cannot get enough of the beautiful Jussi. Thank you for the video. All the best, diana

  • wonderful, wonderful

  • I wonder if we will ever see the likes of Jussi again,

  • Tomorrow, I am cleaning out Mom's room, she died in October. Not something I really want to do, so just trying to do the Ave Maria hymn that gives me so much comfort and the operatic stuff that Mom loved so much. I usually do not like old recordings, sometimes too finger nails on the chalk board for me, This is a phenomenal recording, Mom Loved Jussi Bjorling's voice. Sorry I missed this growing up. What a phenomenon. Thanks for posting this,

  • 4:11 - 4:22 ... JUST TRULY AMAZING....

  • Fantastic! Proud to be Swedish!

  • @Kotlettbengt: Fantastic! Proud to be human!

  • So great!! Thank you Jussi!!

  • @MsRuthes: They are and they are. Actually, the wise guys have to make themselves known. They live in an upside down world in which bad is good and vice versa. This recording blows every male and female singer out of the water and the 'dislikers' are complete idiots if they don't realize this.

  • @wiseroldfart

Those people have escaped from "The Twilight Zone"

    Unica, irripetibile, "immortale"!

  • From his heart to my heart!

  • Jussi was the best opera singer in hole world

  • Jussi was the best oprasinger in hole world

  • @CpFlumpe

  • I only like good things. Jussi is at the top of my list. Bravo Jussi.

  • u who dont speak swedish, when he deliver the big punch he tells us about freedom, and what we should be happy about, its just incredible....

  • All right. I've been driven CRAZY by tiresome christmas music played in our store, and now christmas is finally over! At last (and we're past New Year's, too)! So what do I find while surfing my way through YouTube? Oh Helge Natt, Oh Holy Night, after I was about to chuck a milk bottle (I work in a dairy store) into the stupid radio and stop the stinkin' noise. Jussi Bjorling has redeemed christmas for me. Thank you, Jussi Bjorling.

  • Simply awesome! I never tire of listening to it!

  • On a very down day nursing a very ill 92 year old Mum , I came across this

wonderful God given voice, it lifted me up, and I thanked God for all that we have

and for allowing us the privelege of hearing this divine voice,Thanks to technology it will never die.My Mum had always spoken about him, so I turned the sound up for her, I'm so moved I could just bawl. dawnjude

  • @babalon1971 why thank God? Thank his father and mother and teachers instead. Why not thank Jussi himself? You americans and you "god"

  • @babalon1971 Yes

  • Simple, direct, emotionally powerful, reverent and sublime! A rendition of

timeless artistry, deeply felt and performed with peerless beauty, elegance

and soul! Thank you inca 48 for the gift of Jussi Bjorling for the holiday

    season! Bravo!

  • This is the greatest vocal performance I have ever heard of my favorite holy song.....I've looked a lot too.....God is great..........thanks for this song

  • Stunning - this piece is stunning. The power in his voice at 1:12 is absolutely breath taking. I feel my bone marrow shake when I hear this recording. Thank you Jussi. This is a gift from God through you.

  • perfect

  • PERFECTION

  • You know of what you speak sir!

  • WOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOW

  • I've listen to him every night before Christmas Eve in more than 40 years. I'm moved to tears every time by the beauty of his voice. He was truly the greatest tenor ever.

  • I've listen to him every night before Christmas Eve in more than 40 years. I'm moved to tears every time by the beauty in his voice. He was truly the greatest tenor ever.

  • This is a thrilling performance of a Christmas favorite, and the power with which he ends it is pure delight. Now, having heard this, check out his tender reading of Rachmaninoff's "In the Silence of the Night".....the comparison offers a hint of Jussi's range and artistry! I was fortunate to have heard him sing both live at Orchestra Hall in Chicago in 1958.

  • This really is a magnificent recording of a voice that was a gift from God.

There is no other version that comes close to this one, even though I only understand English.

    What a gem.

    Merry Christmas.

  • Hyvää joulua kaikille

  • This is so beautiful even as an atheist I get moved......

  • Extraordinario tenor

    Gracias querida Mariana Feliz Natal!!!!!!!!!

    Besos

    Juanita

  • Unbelivable!!!!!!

  • Best version ever!

  • No other singer ever recorded has this influence on my Christmas feelings. I am freezing down my back, tears are pressing, and I feel blessed that I can hear a voice like Jussi Bjørlings. THE Christmas song, period.

  • Merry Christmas to you peopele all over the world!

This is the christmas song with the big C.

Performed by the greatest male voice of all time in an uttery brilliant recording.

-22 degrees (celsius) outside my window and 70-80 cm of snow.

Two days to christmas eve (wich is the day we celebrate here in Sweden.

    /Take Care

  • I keep coming back to this recording. At Christmas and throughout the rest of the year too. I'm moved with each and every listen.

  • @amalek80 You aren't alone!

  • Another rare version of this manificent singer

    wwwDOTyoutubeDOTcom/watch?v=JibjDjbofRg&feature=recentlik

    change DOT for actual dots

  • Epic!!! Its sounds like God is singing for His Son.........

    Just Perfect!

Merry Christmas to everyone from Greece!

  • This is THE Christmas song. I have heard almost all versions of it sung by the likes of Lanza through to Il Divo and whilst they all have merit, this one gets me every time. Extraordinary!

  • @SMOOTHEST10: My favorite version. I prefer it to Caruso's. It's funny how some people are raving about Josh Groban and the like after listening to their versions of "O Holy Night." They have no idea how mediocre these cutesy popular singers are and no idea how great the greatest tenors were.

  • @SMOOTHEST10 I too have heard many wonderful singers perform this wonderful song but none have such impact as this. Bjorling is in a class by himself.

  • This is THE Christmas song, I've listened from Mario Lanza to Il Divo sing this and this version gets me every time. Joyeux Noel to one and all.

  • @Johnx88 I totally agree he is the best tenor ever! at the end when he opens his mouth and throat and hits the high C it brings tears to my eyes like no other.

  • @Cirebeer If you love this you'll be equally impressed with his voice and artistry as displayed in Rachmaninoff's "In the Silence of the Night"....brings tears to my eyes!

  • @Cirebeer Actually a high B.. However very well done!

  • @Johnx88 Actually a high B. However very well done!

  • I find it sad that this glorious voice falls too often on tin ears

  • incredible voice this is the best thing about the internet finding this kind of music

  • My favorite tenor in the best rendition of this song ever.

  • Once again; 'balm to my soul'. Thank you Jussi, wherever you are in the Celestial Realms...

    All my love and repect,

    diana

  • Oh my God. I am crying. Its like Gods voice. The best tenor ever!!!

  • Jussi Björling is the best. What strength.

  • @Heinalicious sorry to say that you are wrong: Johan Jonatan "Jussi" Björling was born in Borlänge, Dalarna, Sweden, in February 1911. The midwife's register shows he was born on 5 February; however, the church baptism records erroneously show 2 February, and this was the day on which he celebrated his birthday throughout his life.

  • @Heinalicious You are quite wrong; Jussi was born in Borlänge, Sweden and only something like 5% of the Finnish people speak Swedish.

  • Yes it is in Swedish.

He could have sung it in the original language which is French, or in Italian or in French or in English. But he was Swedish and recording it for a Swedish public. Personally compared to the original French I regard the English words odd and not completely logical.

I personally regard Björling as the greatest tenor ever. He heralded in a new singing approach combining the best of the German and Italian techniques.

  • Yes in Swedish. Very Beautiful!

  • Comment removed

  • Quite possibly the greatest five minutes, four seconds, ever recorded.

  • @Heinalicious

He was NOT from Finland! He was born in my Hometown Borlänge wich lies VERY much in Sweden!

The midwife's register shows he was born on 5 February; however, the church baptism records erroneously show 2 February, and this was the day on which he celebrated his birthday throughout his life. During the night of 9 September, whilst asleep at his summer house on Siarö, he suffered a fatal heart attack which cut short his life at 49 years of age.

  • Merry Christmas!

    Thanks Jussi!

  • Wonderful singer. Truly 'gifted'...

  • @aussiechickdiana

Well spoken mademoiselle. I concur totally.

Good day and God bless you and yours.

  • This truly is the best rendition of this ong, he even beats Pavoratti's balls off in my humble opinion..

  • im an atheist and i have nothing but love for this song

  • im an atheist and i love this

  • Wonderful...

  • He hit's every note so...crissply, and powerfully!

  • In addition, I have listened to pavarotti and Mario Lanza and while they are excellent, I believe Bjorling has the finest and most reverent interpretation.

  • I have never heard a more powerful voice.

  • Gives me goose bumps!

  • NOW thats an artist.

  • Incredibly moving, such vocal beauty.
