  • Before this game, fischer has sent an article to a magazine that Evans was editing. This article described why Fischer considered kings gambit to be an inferior opening for white. Fischer knew that Evans edited that and still beat him with kings gambit. Quite some nerve there huh ? :P

  • Spassky also beat karpoov with it in a "must win" game with his favourite king's gambit when karpov was the then world champion and at the height of his powers. ( See the game here on youtube in the "TV CHESS" series) Brilliant game!

  • @serrie85 There is many alternatives to Qh4+

Even d5 is a playable move, followed by Nf6 or even Qh4+ .. But the main main line is Bc4, Nf6. and only then c6.

  • I think the Bishop's Gambit is a valuable weapon for the Club player and not only in Fischer's time was it used but even recently Morozevich used it against Anand with succes. Also a beautiful game.

  • "a modern Adams"?!?...still,nice vid

  • If Spassky can beat Fischer and Seirawan with the King's Gambit, then it is more than viable at the club level. I play it all the time on the internet. The games are usually exciting.

  • i don't understand why people accept this king's gambit...especially against a guy like fischer. just play 2...Bc5 and cross your fingers.

  • because pratice and theory prove than it is better to accept the gambit or propose the counter-gambit Falkbeer than protect your pawn on e5

  • ...

fischer's game was kinda pretty but it was a tad one-sided...black put up very little fight

the vid gives prevention of 3...d5 as justification for 3. Bc4; i was under the impression that Bc4 in fact allows d5, since for instance after 3... d5 4. Bxd5 Nf6 black gets a lovely game with quite decent development at a net cost of nil. i've consulted my books and databases both of which agree with me, could somebody confirm if that is indeed the case or if i have no idea what im talking about?

  • in a sense, it has to be correct. black at least equalizes in any king's pawn opening if he can play ..e5 and ..d5 without incurring any weaknesses or lag in development. it's more important to develop than it is to hold the pawn.

playing ...d5 and giving back the pawn is much more practical than playing ...g5 and trying to hold on to it, IMO, unless you know exactly what you're doing. ...Qh4+ is tempting, though.

all this discussion is pointless though. 1. e4 c5!! is much better.

  • Fischer has only lost one game in these Kings gambit accepted lines in a Simul. And there were 7 games where he played the Kings Gambit; he also beat a computer with it.

  • evans sucked balls this game: wtf kina plan was he goin for?

  • no. the evans gambit was introduced by captain william davies evans in 1827. larry evans was born over 100 years later, in 1932.

  • Is this the Evans who innovated the Evans Gambit?

  • No, that Evans was a sea captain from the 18th century.

  • Personally, I don't see this as a major weapon in tournament chess, but as surprise opening and club level plays the 3.Bc4 move really wrecks some havoc

  • Really really cool game. I like the way fischer played this!
