  • Thanks, really helped. I just have a question. I have two fancy goldfish (Orandas) would it be possible for one of these guys to live in their tank? Please let me know soon. I have had these fish before but in my tropical fish setup. I just want to make sure they would be ok, my water all winter is 72, and during the summer it's 70 or above.

  • @Laurencia7 72 is a little on the low side, but these guys are quite tolerant, so it might be alright. They're very friendly, but all the darting around that they do might annoy your Orandas... who knows. However you should keep more than one SAE, preferably more than 2 as they're a sociable species.

  • @sp1lurus Thanks! I picked up my two today, they are a little small and my Orandas do not even notice them. I bought them a hideaway and acclimated them to the water. Unfortunately when I ordered them from my local aquarist he was convinced they were "Flying Foxes/Sharks" so I was not sure until I got there they were the right fish, but thankfully they were. I guess even the biggest fish dealers cannot tell the diff. He ordered 6, & I wished I got them all, but it's best if I keep my #s small.

  • I recently got one. I really enjoy watching him. Even though they don't have much color, I think they're really cute.

  • LOVE MY 2 SEA TO BITS ! they are so funny to watch and always make me smile as they do the gardening and chase each other around :) (great vid btw )

  • good job!

my LFS sell them as flying fox and then label as flying fox siamese . I'm quite sure they all true SAE. Might get a few. Have one pari of barbell too.

  • i bet their saying CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN ^^

  • SAE can become lazy too. Once they hit about 5 inches. It's very typical for them to stop eating algae but I have seen very big ones still active as when they were young. Depends on the fishes personality.

  • Nice. Planning to get a few of these as soon as my Molly's die off. Have 3 rainbow barbs & I'm regretting that purchase. They've been killing my plants. But the Siamese Algae eater... Well, I hear they leave the plants alone & the tank clean.

Thanks for the video, dude. It'll help me identify it when I check local pet stores.

Wondering though... What kind of lighting is that? I can never quite get the lighting that good in my tank.

  • @GarrestheWarrior I'm happy that the video helped. I use an off the shelf T5 lighting unit. 2 x 24 watt tubes for my 100L tank. Supposedly meant to imitate sunlight.

  • @GarrestheWarrior I have 2 of these fellas, although they do an amazing job of eradicating beard algae etc they tend to be over zealous when rasping at leaves of plants and soon destroy them if they are delicate. I'd stick to more robust types of fauna such as Java Fern/Amazon Swords etc if you are acquiring these dudes. They are fairly harmless to most plants when small but grow very quickly... Mine have grown to about 10cm and dart around like speed freaks uprooting my plants :/

  • @911Mothman I've got water lillies. And I won't be getting the fish anytime soon. No shop has them in my state. I found a site willing to ship them, but that's across the country & too expensive. Thanks for the info anyway, dude.

  • @GarrestheWarrior No worries pal. I'm suprised you can't get them as they are fairly commonplace in England??? I just re-homed mine as they ended up boshing my Java fern as well!

  • @911Mothman Maryland, USA, actually. I'd have to order from California. "Boshing"?

  • Nice. Planning to get a few of these as soon as my Molly's die off. Have 3 rainbow barbs & I'm regretting that purchase. They've been killing my plants. But the Siamese Algae eater... Well, I hear they leave the plants alone & the tank clean.

  • the Siamese flying fox ate my fish tail D:

  • My algae eater(definitely a siamese) is about 5 now, a big chunky thing with gorgeous bronze colours now. He does eat algae, but as he's aged he's been more interested in the flakes and pellets the other fish get, though I've read that's typical. He's constantly on the go with the algae all the same, I think there's just too much for him. Might get me a sweet little bristlenose plec to help him with the job, TEAMWORK :D

  • Wow, I have been duped big time, my tanks are filthy with algae... Got a bunch of what are supposed to be SAE but they look nothing like these pretty little guys.

  • Thanks for taking the time to produce this video. Can't wait to get home and check if I have the real thing.

  • Your video is very informative. I'll give it a like. I am starting to have algae appear in my planted 22g tank and want to go a natural route like everything else. I don't want a false algae eater.

    Thanks for the video.

  • Thanks for the video

  • dammit i falsely bought the flying fox...

  • mine is a fake, but he still does a great job and looks better,

  • I think I had bought a false SAE! Thanks for the video.

  • I like the music. Thanks for the good explanation

  • excelent video, thank you very much, it really helps. But the music is shit, pls change it.

  • what song is this?? btw great video

  • "Stranger on the shore" by Acker Bill

  • @sp1lurus Do these eat beard algae or staghorn algae?

I putted some in, but they just swam around 1 day and ate nothing...

then 4 jumped out of 6, so I moved the 2 to a nursing tank.....

    help :(
