I Wanted to thank you for your commonsense approach to health and diet Dr. G. I agree with you hole heartedly. Wish we had more doctors like you out there to save more people from all of the false information they have been exposed to. Thanks for all that you do Dr. Look forward to your next video. Larry
Great video Dr. G. Do you have any input on where we can find a better diet for our dogs? I do buy premium dog food and always have. But I am not sure who to trust on what would be a good weight management diet for my dogs. Would you elaborate a little more on what you feed your dog? Very Interesting subject. Thanks
You are right Dr. G. I know what I am talking because am vet and I would never sell that crap in my Vet. Hospital. I like to make money but not the crocked way. Thanks for the video.
I agree, low carb is not the way to go..in a long run it will cause health problems, brain feeds on carbs, it will not live without them, when body doesn't get enough of them, it will break down it's own muscle since fat can't be broken down into ellements that brain can feed on. In a low carb diet we would actually lose muscle tone. We need to eat a balanced diet of whole foods, not processed junk, and fatty meat.
@BytomGirl I think Dr. G meant low cal, or low fat. And btw..fat can be broken down to ketones, which can make the brains requirements for glucose drop to 30 gram or less per day. I'd be a skeleton by now if what you say were true.
@Viewtiful22 Yes, many so called diets are low cal but many dangerous diets are very low in good carbs where you can eat all the meat and bad fat but no fruits or whole grains, ketones in a long run can be very dangerous and you can;t live in ketosis forever it will kill you. The best diet is the one you can eat for the rest of your life, full of nutrients, natural and organic. People who fast long on water long time get delirious because their brains don't gey enough food. I did it 21 days..
@BytomGirl My experience doesn't match that. The brain can also feed on ketones, and studies suggest it actually generally fares better on ketones than carbs.
@fuzzwarmy How long was your experience? You can;t live on ketones forever, it will kill you eventually...read up on it, it is a short term diet and not very healthy...the healthiest diet is one you can live and be healthy on for the rest of your long life.
@BytomGirl I didn't say anything about living on only ketones forever; I said that the brain can feed on ketones as well as carbs, which you'll find is correct if you read up on it. Plus, studies indicate that the brain fares even better on ketones than it does on carbs (see for example "Dietary ketosis enhances memory in mild cognitive impairment"). Plus, our bodies can turn protein into glucose via gluconeogenesis and even fat into glucose via the CYP2E1 enzyme.
@fuzzwarmy Not even forever but more than two weeks of ketones can cause hiuge health problems for kidneys, liver, gallbladder, digestive system and heart. I was on hetones 3 weeks during a water fasting when I was stupid, now I am fighting gallbladder stones. Yes, ketones sometmes are used for people who have seisures bot for someone with normal brain function it is not advisble to be on carb free diet. Inhancement though is short lived. . Brain like our whole body needs normal food.
@BytomGirl Again, I didn't say anything about "carb free." That's another straw man. LC doesn't have to be zero carb. Water fasting is fasting, not a low carb diet. I don't recommend extended water fasting. Symptomatic gallstones take years to develop, not weeks. I've been eating a relatively LC diet with intermittent and sometimes extended ketosis for over 7 years. It has worked better than anything I've tried and I wish I had never listened to the sort of fat phobia you're promoting.
@fuzzwarmy No carb diet or fasting will produce the same result: ketosis so that is why I mentioned it. However if I had a choice for a shprt time between the two, I would take fasting as it doesn;t put such burdain on the stomach from just protein and fat, at least it restts and there is a cleansing process. A very small amount of carbs will not give enough nutrition or fiber and long lasting energy and is not a life long diet. That is how I feel. Of course they have to be unproccessed carbs.
@BytomGirl For me it's the opposite, LC with no or intermittent fasting works much better for me than extended fasting. I feel way better on LC, especially when eating plenty of high quality animal fats. It's not even so much LC that's the key for me as eating biologically appropriate natural whole foods that I fare well on. It just so happens that it works out to LC, high fat. I'm not looking to convince anyone to do LC, so do whatever works for you, I just don't buy that LC is evil for all.
@fuzzwarmy Of course, I agree, we are all different and fair well on different things. I don;t do well with animal fats, if I ate more than few grams at once, I would have a gallbladder attack. I don;t handle heavy animal fats so I don;t eat them often, I mostly eat fish, avocadoes and olive oil for fats, if I eat meat it is always the leanest I can find.
I do best on fish, veggies, fruits, beans, nuts and whole grains
@fuzzwarmy Just remember that too much animal fat no matter how well you think you do on it can in a long run cause many problems, too much acid and wrong PH, gall stones, liver problems and kidney problems, bad circulation and heart problems. So limiting it might be a good idea and combining with other sources of protein like nuts and beans.
@BytomGirl That hasn't been my experience over seven plus years. In fact, my experience has been the opposite. Sorry to disappoint you. The chronic kidney stones, chronic urinary tract infections and poor circulation I had on a low fat diet with plenty of "healthy whole grains" and fruits and veggies went away on a gluten-free Paleo diet. Beans have a terrible effect on me. Beans and I just don't mix. Nuts I can tolerate in moderate quantities, but I don't notice any benefits at all from them.
@fuzzwarmy P.S. Instead of prescribing for me before you've learned anything about me, why not first seek to understand? Physicians don't prescribe until they've first examined the patient and asked them questions.
gree that ketones will temporarily deliver energy to your brain but with prolonged use of such diet will cause many health problems, especially for kidneys by high production of uric acid and causing kidney stones and gout as well as burden on kidneys as with such diet there is a lot of liguid passing thriugh the kidneys and bladder overworking the kidneys. another negative side, you don;t get much fiber on such diet and will get digestive system problems.
You're quite correct that unprocessed animal foods, including fats, meats and organs (and bones and blood), are what dogs (and cats) naturally thrive on and the video was excellent, though I got the wrong impression from the video text summary, which seemed to suggest that low carb is source of the problem. Interestingly, wild canids like wolves and coyotes also eat some wild berries and dropped fruits in season, though it shows up largely undigested in their scat.

Doc, what do you think about the Perfect Health Diet?

The corn and soy added are GMO as well which are causing huge problems. Switch your pets to grain free organic food and watch their symptoms vanish.
