I designed a two claw gripper using the same design for a 2007 capstone ITT TECH project for our graduating class which involved building an E.O.D robot. The gripper used a 12 volt drill motor and it was able to pick up objects 1 foot across down to a few milimeters with plenty of gripping power. Worm gear designs are simple, elegant and relatively cheap.
