Good tutorial, quick question though because I'm new to 3DS, why is it necessary to UVW map a model? What difference does it make as opposed to just applying a material to a model straight from the material editor? Thanks for any help.
@GohanSama because your UV's will be overlaying one another, meaning that if you add a texture you will see a lot of repetition of the same exact parts of that texture on the model, making the finished product look less realistic.
@Velixae if you need to have all the parts on the same texture then yes it IS helpful. what you can do is ATTACH all the parts into one model and the uvw map them, THEN DETACH them all to separate objects. that's how i how i do it at least.

hi great tutorial, i have a problem, when i set the cilindrical uvw mapping, and check the unwrap all the seams are aligned in a single thin line that goes way outside the square, do you know what am i doing wrong? the model is a simple tube

Why the hell did you unwrap it when in the end you just opened material editor and put it on your model? Wasnt the unwrapping extra useless step?

Dude. What if the model has many parts? Does it still work or do we have to group them. If yes, how to group?

I like this simple tutorial. I was having a rough time learning from other uv tuts because they make it look so damn hard.
