Often I observe different versions of the same song and how they are presented. Where ever I start, I always somehow end up back at a Kingston Trio song. Their music moves me and they have presented the most enjoyable body of work over an extended period. Tonight I began with a non-Kingston Trio version of 2:10, 6:18 and listened to many renditions. Then more selections of other songs and I still ended up here. Bob's voice still has the magic. Thanks for the music.
Bob is living Pfoenix, AZ and retired. He does not gun his Corvette into the front door of his fave bar in Marin. He is the last surviving member of this iconic group! He and Dave Guard were the heart and soul of the Trio.
There's a fantastic PBS special about the Kingston Trio, and I bought the DVD about three years ago. I watched it last night. I've been a fan since the 50's, and there's never been a sexier song or singer than Bob Shane.
Bob, you still have it! I have been a fan since their first release in the 1950's. As a musician, I have covered many of their songs. Of course, I didn't make as much money from them as they did. LOL But I may have had as much fun. Thank you Kingston Trio.
Music is memories and this song brings back so many good ones. I can remember, in a slight moment of intoxication, walking down a steet in Toronto, singing this song with a friend. A great song, a great friend, a great momment.
I am proud to perform this with Club D'Jive and The Bruce Barley Combo. Classic! No one can top Bob Shane on this. He "owns" this song. RIP John Stewart. You are missed.
Haul away joe, that was one of my favorite obscure Kingston Trio songs.I loved DG's flailing banjo style in it. I wasn't aware they all got together more recently before John Stewart died. Was that in Phoenix? Too bad the producer of "Wherever we may go" couldn't post some of the concert/ tv footage she must have waded through to create the film. Thanks Again
HOW MUCH do I love this song? Ive been singing this for donkeys years. Its the only song short enough to remember all of when you are drunk, and makes the PERFECT party piece!:-D
I have been a fan of the Kingston Trio since their first album came out. Nad "Scotch and Soda" is just as fabulous a song today as it was when I was very young and heard it in mono - not stereo. Bob Shane does wonders with this song. And I am also sorry to hear John Stewart passed away. He added so much to the Trio. John, you were a true "Daydream Believer" who will be missed.
This song is the last one sung at the final concert in 1967, when the "old" trio broke up. A fitting end to a great 10 years. I got to meet Bob backstage a few years, before he stopped touring & recording. Believe me, it was a highlight of my life! I wrote the Trio's publicist afterwards that seeing Bob perform "Scotch & Soda" was better than seeing McCartney perform "Yesterday". She wrote back & said she would pass that on to Bob.
AND - this is the song that Frank Sinatra said he would NOT record as long as Bob Shane was alive, playfully referring to him as a threat to his rep as "The Voice"
Bob Shane is a favorite even with us younger people that were not yet alive when The Kingston Trio first gained fame. Wish could have enjoyed their music the first time around. :) I was born in 1973... got here as soon as I could...
yeah, my Dad said the Kingston Trio he liked their music in the early 1960s. but he said it was the music for the more sophisticated. the college boys listened to it and suddenly he didn't find it cool anymore. He pulled out the records years later and loved it again and til this day. Their music is timeless. and Scotch & Soda is a great song that all drinkers can relate too :)
The songwriters last name was Simmons

what fun and how interesting how long the song languished until the Trio made it such a favourite.

Bob Shane is a great entertainer. I never tire of his rendition of Scotch & Soda, probably one of the best songs ever written.
