So I'm thinking of starting ham radio. I'm 15 years old. How much money do you think I should spend to at least get a basic system to operate ham radio? Thanks. -Scott
@phoshizzo Probably a couple of hundred for a new handheld 2 meter radio. More for HF. Google Teen Radio Journey to listen to Paul's podcasts about getting licensed and going on hamradio. Randy
The name hamshack sounds like something one of those sleazy people would take their dates to. It still looks cool though. I wish I could have even half the stuff you have,
Hi Randy, great video's. Thats one nice shack you have. Shame you dont use your 990 so often. I have a 990 and im wondering if you or anyone else has used a vhf transverter with the 990? 73s
You need a real radio like a cobra 2000 or a ranger, thems big radios unlike them crappy icoms or yazuus, man my antrons got 60 dolby an talks rings around the best ham beam, it takes a professional to do cb
just go search a video called ' anti ham radio cbs are better ' by redneckmikesr and he shows yall why, hams are jealous cause they dont have fancy stuff like echo mikes
Subdivisions are little communist dictatorships many times, other people live telling you what you can and cant do with your own property, Glad I'm in the boonies - no zoning and no one dictating what I do unless it's unhealthy or illegal.
Ah but you can work through the internet using IRLP - I was hesistant to restudy for a license after 35 yrs since my novice license expired until I saw the thing Randy and other hams are doing, and found you can use Echolink and not even own a radio - and the fact that there's no more CW test since Feb 07. Taking my test Nov 14th, hope to be able to pass and get Extra but Tech would be great too.
You can get a license at 16. I got my technician when I was 12. If you mean can you do plain voice transmissions, yes you can. What you talk about depends a lot on what kind of radio your interested in. If you are QRPing, a lot of it is simply how your transmission is coming through.
not! Used to mess with dad's hf radio as a kid when he wasn't around, took my buddies into the shack and we annoyed and pranked active conversations 3 thousand miles away....Priceless good clean wholesome fun!!
Awesome setup Randy, I can only hope to have one similar someday. I did however fabricate a 2 meter antenna off plans from the net today using copper piping and brass nuts and bolts. Hope it works after I get my license. It is a 2 meter square dipole, made of copper water pipe designed by someone named Koff. I am itching to try it out, I should have my tech license in a few weeks. I'll let you know how it goes. Got my fingers crossed that it works, because it was super cheap to fabricate.
Randi, you're enticing me into it. How much range do you think will I get with 65w of 2m Yaesu, w/out repeater, with beam and omni. ant. respectively, in a terrain like Massachusetts?
Hi randy i have been working PSK 31 for about 3 Years now and love it a lot had lots of QSOs State side and all over but i liked you Video and i think its very explanatory and a very good video for the new comers to PSK love watching you Video Keep up the Good work randy one Day i may see myself on Youtub in a QSO with You
Randy: Work with local Boy Scout group and currently teaching 51 scouts Radio Merit Badge. Love to show them some of ur stuff. Done well with good commentary. Of course, I am teaching the class how to become Ham radio operators.
Randy, great shack! Can I ask if you had problems with noise running 3x computers? I run 2x computers, and get heaps of noise, and can not remove it. Running Kenwood TS-480S/AT and TS-830S. Regards Kevin, Zl1KFM.
Hi, I have never had any problems. My antennas are about 200 feet away from the radio and computer equipment, so that helps. I guess you need to to some trouble shooting and try and figure out how the computers are getting into the radios. Is the antenna picking it up? Are the computers connected to the radios and passing the noise along? This may not be easy to fix. Randy
Haha, I have the same old Apple mousepad. Cool QTH.

I live in a subdivde so I don't think they would be happy if I put in a 200 foot Cellphone tower in my back yard with all of these beams in the sky.

what do you talk about over ham radio
can you use it like CB
can i get my licenc at 16 no one answered that yet
IWANNABEFAMOUS15 2 years ago
You can talk about just about anything over ham radio. Unlike CB, though, you need a license.
Obtaining a Technician-level license isn't hard. You just need to study basic ham radio skills and regulations, and take a test on them.
You can get you license at any age. I got mine at 13.
There is plenty of info and resources out there for anyone with interest in ham radio. I encourage you to get your license and try it out.
If you have any questions, feel free to send me a message.
