@xsuzheartx Joel does not view women as unequal, lesser beings. How would you feel if a boy touched YOUR daughter in such a sexual way? I seriously doubt that you wold be ok with that. So leave him alone. He's standing up for what he believes is right. How about I start attacking YOUR beliefs. Would you feel different then?
@BornAgainByChrist1 Ok i dont like his choice, and you saying that daughter crap is stupid. its wrestling its a sport, they arent touching eachother sexually they are just trying to win a match. if someones daughter wanted to wrestle im sure they wouldnt like it but they would still support them, and they would want people to go there hardest against there own kid. my person opinion is this kid shouldnt even wrestle, he joined the sport he should give his all against everyone not pick and choose
@loonmaniac. Do you have a daughter? If you do, would you feel comfortable with a boy touching her in a sexual way? Whether wrestling or not? That is this outstanding young man's point. Ask yourself that question, "Would I want a boy to touch my daughter sexually like that?"
@xsuzheartx joel was one of the favorites to win the 112 class while herkelman went 0-2 after taking the forfeit. besides, she is the same weight as him, so his size wouldnt be a problem. none of it had to do with the possibility of losing, it had to do with his religious beliefs as a strong christian and his principles as an athlete. hes just a good guy.
@DOWORKINATOR If by "strong Christian" you mean one who views women in an unequal, demeaning, patronizing way--then I suppose he is. I don't think the Christian message is about inequality and injustice at all, and I think we've seen that time and again people have used religion to advance oppression when in reality it's meant to do the opposite. The first person to proclaim the gospel was a woman...
Don't let the losers get you down, kid. You did the right thing. As a wrestler you know that you are more of a man then 95 percent of your critics as well.
That move right there says it all why girls should not be wrestling men. It would have been genitalia to genitalia. What a joke that this kid is catching flack

This boy weighs 103 pounds. Maybe he forfeited because he was afraid of being beaten by a girl in front of a large audience.

Joel is now up to 112 pounds of muscular fury!
What religion is Joel Northup that he feels so strongly about not wrestling a girl?
BAD journalism not to track down that fact.
Is there only ONE religion in Iowa now?

All respect to you Northrup. I'm sure with the conviction you clearly have, the haters mean nothing to you.
