Let's get one thing straight: Christopher Guest and Fred Willard are in the same class of comic genius as Groucho Marx, George Carlin, Mark Twain, Bill Cosby, and Shakespeare
This is excruciating. I mean, this is really Curb Your Enthusiasm/Peep Show type of stuff. Charlie Rose is a dumb hillbilly who can't shut up, but for Christopher Guest to sigh audibly at 9:00 or so? That's shocking. You're good, Guest, but you can only get away with so much--many people have survived grueling Charlie Rose interviews without behaving like that.
@calvinklein457 Oh come on. He should have given him the treatment Gene Simmons gave Terry Gross. Have you seen the "interview" Rose gave with Noam Chomsky? Don't let our greatest living intellectual finish a sentence, Charlie-boy. On the other hand, when he interviewed Obama - worship the ground the empty suit walks on. What a putz he is, Guest was too patient with that half-wit.
@mattlove1 I hear you. I suppose this could be worse: Charlie Pierce, writing in Esquire magazine, said that he couldn't bear to watch Charlie Rose interview Tom Brokaw because "putting Brokaw and Rose at the same table might trigger a critical mass of sonorous banality, causing the world to end in an explosion of oatmeal." (If you're a Charlie Rose hater, check out the mock interview on the Colbert Report. Colbert gives Rose a dose of his own medicine, and it's absolutely devastating.)
Guest is dumbfounded by Rose's idiotic reaction to the New Delhi/rash bit. And Rose just keeps lobbing it up with that clueless giggle...'it give it a kind of multilateral feeling...wouldn't it?...and that's good." Guest's face is priceless. i had no idea Charlie Rose was such a fool. how has he managed to stay on the air? How awkward.
I'm reading Live from NY right now. It's a collection of stories about SNL from its cast/staff. I forget who wrote it, but he said that Guest has the driest sense of humor, and some people may like it, but it's not for him. I think he was basically saying Guest was a jerk to him. I like Guest. I think he's a genius. But I can see why he might be called a jerk. Charlie Rose, I don't know very well, but it seems like he was making Guest extremely uncomfortable in this interview.
wow! charlie is one of the most boring people i've ever seen. there aren't many people who can suck the life out of the room that christopher guest is in, but ...
I don't see what you guys are seeing with Charlie Rose. The job of an interviewer isn't to just sit and listen to the person talk and ask a couple questions then shut up. It should be like a conversation.
Watch some other of this conversations with others. In my opinion he is one of the best interviewers there is.
@TheHockeyCentral I agree. Rose seemed to have a hard time with Guest because Guest is notoriously private and shy. He's obviously hard to draw out in an interview and rarely does them. I'd think Guest must have some respect for Rose because he agreed to do this very rare interview. I like "The Charlie Rose Show" because it's one of the only venues left where you can see someone sit down for 30 minutes or more and just talk. Let's be thankful we have this interview with Guest.
This is kind of uncomfortable to watch because Guest looks uncomfortable, especially at the end. Is he annoyed at Rose? I think Rose is a good natured guy, but I agree, there is too much of Rose trying to finish Guest's sentences and put words in his mouth. But poor Rose, he looks so uncomfortable at the end.
charlie rose is pretty clueless here and keeps asking the dumbest questions that show that with all the research he's done he doesn't understand thing 1about his subject
@bigfatbugface I have heard that Christopher Guest can be a bit "prickly" but I don't think Rose made it easy on him. I just don't think the two clicked, and Guest got impatient.
That last bit was spontaneous Guest style comedy with Charlie Rose laying a huge egg of unawareness. He was doing Fred Willard and he didn't even know it. Hilarious and unsettling.
I really enjoy christopher guest, but charlie rose proves once again that he is one of the worst television interviewers. he is constantly interrupting and attempting to complete the interviewees sentences with inaccurate statements. .
@jayjayjigsby2 HALLELUJIAH!!! I live in UK and I think Rose is viewed as almost Godlike in the States..BUT Ive always known that he always puts his fake gravitas voice on, asks stupid, pointless questions, and always fails to really understand his guests points of view. Truly the worst tv interviewer on tv, closely followed by Craig Ferguson.
@jayjayjigsby2 Changing track I must say I enjoy Letterman...defo NOT Jay "Big Jaw" Leno...but Dave somehow seems to get the mix right for me, at least when he isnt being blackmailed....!? In the UK Jonathan Ross used to steal the Letterman style with "The Last Resort" on Ch 4 & was great, but Ross now sticks to cheap innuendo, bravado & shallow questions, I rarely watch now, always a let down with potentially great guests...
@jayjayjigsby2 Yeah, the interviewer seems to think that everything Christopher says ought to be "funny", and therefore just laughs, when all he is doing is answering the question. Christoper Guest is rightly irritated by him.
oh man, don´t you just know the type. You say something randomly funny and some...person starts to hammer it in until they truly killed the initial fun and put a blanket over the whole situation. Poor Christopher to be interviewed by such an unfunny guy.
Christopher Guest is a comic genius! I have been a huge fan of his since Tap and his year on SNL ( a show he seems "ok" doing) btw, that season was the best ever!!
he and his wife are wonderful people. I met them on the streets of NYC and she gave permission for my acting company to use selections from her book. Good People!
Also my favorite SNL season ever, 1984-85. Very creative and different from the other seasons. Guest, Crystal, Short, Shearer -- terrific writers and performers all!
@Vortigern99 You're absolutely right. Best season ever for SNL was '84-'85. It's in a class of its own, without a doubt. What's odd, is the following season with an entirely new cast was probably their worst season. I think Carvey, Hartman, Miller, Hooks, and the rest of the '86 cast revived the show again, but it's never been the same. I sure miss those days!
Wow, that was some of the best 20 seconds of unintentional comedy I've ever seen. I think Charlie Rose was just fawning too much over Guest and ended up driving that last question into the ground. Funny stuff, though--.
Guest is just an incredibly cerebral guy. The awkwardness towards the end comes from the fact that he's taking Charlie Rose's questions incredibly seriously. Hardly a bad thing.
"Do you take advice?" Was kind of a stupid question for Rose to ask. Guest is a director making movies and writing scripts .... in what context would he be taking advice?
The idiocy is due to ROSE, when he goes off the path, dwelling on the offhand example of Guests and I think Guest is just annoyed at his missing of the point, as Rose is often want to do.
what may be considered stand offish is him part acting, and part reflecting awkwardness back on the interviewer who said "I knew you were gonna say that" he called him out, he playfully tried to make him improvise, and he couldn't
Guest is a brilliant talent. I love Spinal Tap, and his first 3 movies with his troupe (FYC not so much), but he seems shy, complex, standoffish, and a borderline jerk. .
Not a comfortable interviewee subject but I love the guy anyway for what he's brought to the screen.
haha, yeah he made it awkward there at the end, because as usual, he doesn't seem to be able to connect with his guests ever...geeking out about a throw-away example.
But I do like Charlie's show and interviews more than any other because it's so honest and relaxed in the time frame.
i've heard that chris is a dick. but this interviewer is terrible. terrible. i feel bad for chris. i think he did a great job dealing with this idiot.
I've seen Christopher Guest in person a few times, not in concert but backstage and on video shoots and stuff, and he's TERRIFYING. By far the scariest celebrity alive. I don't quite know why, but others with me said the same thing. Scary, scary, scary. But brilliant and funny when he's on TV and not in the room with you.
Very intimidating, kinda snobby, just looked at us like we were peons not worth talking to. Then Jamie Lee Curtis came by and was SOOO nice and warm and funny... I don't get that relationship at all!
