I believe what Omerk88 was referring to was a survey that was taken years ago showing that the three most recognized faces in the world were Jesus, Mickey Mouse, and Muhammed Ali. He was just that famous worldwide.

I barely remember this from when I was little. I see that it follows the same mystery plot formula as "Scooby Doo, Where Are You?"

As to criticism of Ali's ego, he was as much a showman as he was an athlete. He was playing to the audience. On top of that, he stuck to his convictions and he knew he was a role model.
