  • what size of strings you are using?

  • Are you sure this bass is a piccolo ? It looks like a tenor to me ...The one that Stanley Clarke uses...

  • What is the scale length of this bass? Can you tune a 34" scale up the octave with piccolo strings? I've heard you can't without a slightly shorter scale.

  • @Jakfrost944 Spector makes a "shorty" bass that's just a hair over 30"...that's probably what the bass in this video is.

  • Kudos man!

  • Wow

  • This is amazing. It fills the groove slot but also clearly takes the lead with this song.

  • He plays the bass like it is a legitimate instrument, hat's off to him.

  • @DangerSheep Yeah, that'd probably be your best bet. I still pluck away on my guitar every now and then for fun but I find it too hard to keep both going and be happy with my progress on both. I'm a 6 string bassist personally so that satisfies all my needs, but if you want even higher notes again then yeah; a Piccolo tuned bass is probably your best bet :)

  • stupid question... can i use piccolo bass strings from d'addario on my ibanez sr300f?

  • @rakk462 dont see why not.

  • Not to piss on the guy but isn't this just the first four strings of normal guitar. It's cool and all but really. Give the guy a six sting bass if all he needs is a bigger guitar.

  • @Drunkcitymusic

A Piccolo bass is actually an octave lower than guitar, and an octave above a normal bass, and there are things you can't do on a guitar, such as slap, because of the tiny string spacing. The scale of the neck also affects the tone massively, piccolo bass is a totally different instrument to guitar.

  • @Sambou96 The first four strings on a guitar EADG are actually an octave higher than a bass guitar. And a piccolo bass is also an octave higher than a normal bass. So essentially it is the same as the first four strings of a guitar, but you know, just bigger guage strings, wide string spacing, and just that sexy bass guitar timbre.

  • Superb. I've wanted to own a piccolo bass, or at least get light enough strings to tune one of my basses to A through C. Anybody know of full-length strings that can do so? At any rate, this solo is excellent1

  • I'm tired of seeing idiots who know nothing of the piccolo bass, and say its pointless. The piccolo bass is an instument in its own right, and the purpose of it is its SOUND. The pickups, scale length etc. make for a different tone that neither a standard guitar or bass could produce. Most guys who play piccolo bass probably play a standard bass for the most part anyways.. well except jeff schmitd. Piccolo bass is just a good way for bassist to experiment.

  • nice!

  • *looks at bass then looks at hands* fuck it, im gonna play drums!

  • this guy is sick

  • what's the point of piccolo bass, when it's tuned like a guitar? it sounds very similar too...

  • @DangerSheep It's just a different tone, and still being played like you would a normal bass there's things you can do with this that you wouldn't be able to do with a guitar; different techniques, but more so different lines that a bass player would think of that a guitarist wouldn't. (starting on guitar then moving to bass I'm well aware of the differences in how a bassist thinks compared to a guitarist-it's a very different way of playing music, even the same line sometimes)

  • @seanevans1992 i see, haven't thought of it like that before :) in fact, was thinking of buying a guitar but i think i'll just go with a piccolo since i already play bass :)

  • If I`d heard this without audio and someone told me it was a nylon -string guitar, I would have believe them. Now I want to learn piccolo bass!

  • wow i had to see it in slow mo just so i could catch a glimps of his black belt fingerwork. keep showing us how its done. a true bassist jo, thanks for inspiration and you carry yourself so well.

  • how much is piccolo string?

  • great tapping

  • Piccolo basses just overcome the idea of the bass being "unversatile". You get the sound of a guitar, but the versatility of playing many other different styles. I'm not dissing the guitarists or the guitar, it's just that bass>guitar.

  • WOW!!!

  • A piccolo Spector... could there be a better tone than this?

  • ohhhhhh you're amazing! that bass sound incredible!

i've heard a lot of guys that says the piccolo bass sounds like a guitar but a guitar cannot be slaped!

    keep playing!

  • @LuxoCuebass i can slap guitar...

  • Fantastic! I am about to be late but I just have to watch this again. Love it.

  • que SABOR ermano, ESO es sabes tocar bajo

    wooooow

  • you are simple awesome!!!! I can see clearly that you feel your music and thats what it takes to create this sound. I honestly envy you. I play guitar and bass but still have a long way to go to play like you. Take care my friend and long live your music and talent!

  • so this is a bass, that is tuned to the guitar range?

  • Great playing and sound..welll done..what gauge strings etc

  • that's not bass playing! too much treble!! switch to guitar if you like that!

  • @psyber84 If you knew anything about jo's playing you would know piccollo bass is just one of the many facets of his playing.

And what do you think you know about bass playing?

Please post a video response to show your worthiness.

  • @psyber84 On a guitar you can't slap as well as on a bass, and you don't exactly get the sound of a piccolo bass :s

  • I've got some friends saying that bass is easy, but bass is just as easy or as hard as you make it yourself, rock on! \m/

  • Freaking awesome

  • it doesn't count when you're black.

When your black you automaticly have rythm it's in your roots

  • @boilingpoint3 thats bullshit, and a stereotype

  • sorry

  • wow

  • Nice tecnik, but if you play salsa and latin music be carefull with the clave,at the begin of the video you play not on clave or the maybe change your drummer. But at the end of the video you play good and on clave

  • I have to say, I've never liked how piccolo bass strings sound. But I also have to say that was some amazing playing.

  • @SpaceRitual

I don't like the sound but I can appreciate the playing. Hard as fuck to play salsa :P

  • Piccolo has changed me forever I just got my first pair.

  • Nice :D

  • how come his strings are so light?

  • piccolo bass... smaller gauges

  • how does he not break strings that thin when he pops?

  • nicE!:D

  • i was reading a book while hearing this @ 1:07 i was about throw my book at the computer lmao

  • .....wow

  • the bass in this video is amazing

and the skill this person has is incredible

    very inspiring

  • yes.

  • amazing stuff man amazing

  • Crazy wonderful play!!

    I love Spector ,too.

is that Piccolo Bass just change a different string on normal bass? maybe the guitar string? or they are something different from normal bass?

  • Lighter strings so they can tune them an octave higher (same octave range as guitars, but thanks to the pick ups, play style and stuff they have a different sound and tone.)

  • Can they be played at the normal bass octave?

  • You probably could do it by turning your amp's bass key up, but I haven't really tried. Lack a set of piccolos atm. :<

  • we bass players will take over the earth

  • hello?! you guys are THE foundation of the band. Us guitarists would sound thin without you guys!

  • You're so humble, I can't believe it. I never meet humble guitarists. I respect you!

  • THANK YOU! Finally a guitarist who says that.

  • @gilbertvanvai5150 Respect 4 u mate!

  • @gilbertvanvai5150 actually, not with this instrument. its tone is too high. it wouldn't help you with your sound too much :-). but it's great instrument

  • @NapoleanXV will? take a look around, my friend.

  • What you are doing is really nice sound's awesome but you're totally wrong about the salsa concept .

  • Wow. 5*

  • yes because we all know that a guitar has a neck that long

  • A piccolo bass merely differs in pitch from a bass guitar. The string tension, string thickness, amount of wood in the bass, and the technique required (all determined at least partially by scale length) define the differences between a piccolo bass and a guitar.

  • actually, you are pretty much right, tuned exactly the same as the top 4 strings on a guitar(e,a,d,g), just different frequency

  • actually piccolo strings are harder to play/bend than normal strings on a bass, it's like they have more tension or something

  • How about it's for people who just want to play a higher register on a familiar instrument or in a familiar layout so that they don't have to resort to a guitar -_-

  • exactly :D

as i said: a junior version

  • No a junior would be tuned to the same pitches but smaller much like my mini-guitar. It is slightly larger than a tenor ukulele but tuned the same as a guitar of typical proportions.

  • Sexy Grooves!

  • Cool video... this guy rips!

  • sabroso¡¡¡

  • holy shit.

  • it kills me when people get on here and question someones skills. it's pretty obvious that this guy can flat out play. what more do you need. i always wonder if these critics can play any instrument. let alone a bass.

  • perfectly put. probably the best thing Ive ever read someone comment on youtube.

  • It kills when whenever someone "can play" it automatically means you can't say anything wrong about what he does without being harassed by suckers.

  • lol,ur so right!@codia12!

  • Does anybody know how a piccolo bass is tuned? I always thought C G D A.

  • yeah...and does it require a specific set of strings?

  • yeah...its like the highest four strings of a six string bass set. But it could be anything. it could be F C G A, Bb F C D,

or Ab Bb F C as well

  • I heard it was same as the normal bass E, A, D, G but one octave higher.

  • It is. The other fellow was thinking of a tenor bass which is ADGC.

  • piccolo bass is tuned the same as a standard bass

the only difference between piccolo and standard is the set of strings they have theyre an octave higher and cost about $15

  • Great. Thanks man!

  • string?????

  • ive only seen very short clips of this guy and i thought he was fucking amazing. im glad i found this. really righteous.

  • respect man respect! thats awesome. i just found out about piccolo bass and this has really got me interested.

  • No!!!!! please this is salsa not this! man get back to school and please stay!!!

  • Great melody! keep them comming

  • Got your message ! I first i thought you were CONFUSED only

about flamenco but now i see ALSO about salsa.

I AM NOT questioning you playing skills as a bass player

    RAHTER THAN A MUSICIAN.

The point here is NEITHER of what you place on the title is correct.

    NOR SALSA NOR FLAMENCO.

here is a hint of flamenco CARLES BENAVENT. " "" "" "" "" Salsa RAY RAMIREZ

    familiar at all ??

  • mate, fuck off, this guy is an amazing bass player, superb in fact, no one cares about your definition of Salsa or Flamenco, you're probably some shit bag loser who's barely able to play Green Day songs, stopping taking time to go on this guys videos and questioning his musical knowledge, becuase I bet he knows a hell of a lot more than you.

  • lol!@wikipederules!~

  • 1:23 - 1:33

    Love those chords

  • Wow what a great playing!

  • Nice groove I really enjoyed the two hand tap section and great technique. It sounds nice and clean.

  • dude needs to find his own voice.sounds too much lick victor wooten

  • What happened to just the fun of playing?

  • This doesn't sound that Victorish at all.

    Just good.

  • just wondering, what would be the difference between the piccolo bass and the regular guitar, since its just up one octave.

  • Fewere strings, a tone more similar to bass than a guitar.

  • much longer scale, to the tune of like 10-12 inches. much rounder, deeper, more bass-like tone

  • This guy is GREAT!

If somebody can answer my question, what is the point of a piccolo bass, it it's just basically a really long, four stringed guitar?

  • It's a bass guitar with special strings. Tuned high. :)

  • Haha, well I figured that, but it has the same notes as a guitar, so really, what's the point?

  • For that matter why play a 6 string bass? If you have to aks a question like that you have little reason to explore possibilities outside of the little box you live in. Its like asking why Niel Pert need so many drums? Cant he do with just the basic kit everyone else has?

  • No, asking Neil Peart why he has so many drums is just idiotic because I know he can't do what he does with a standard five piece. What i'm saying is, a piccolo bass is just a long guitar without b and e strings.

  • Can't do this on a standard 4 string bass.

  • Either way, I think we're talking about different things. Have a good one.

  • what a master of bass

  • Awesome!! Great playing, great sound!!

This is standard long scale ( 34' ) bass guitar?

    Greetings from Poland!!

  • yes with piccolo tuning, an octave higher then normal

  • Thanx 4 answer :) I have one more question 4 U...

What sizes of strings are you using? Of what company?

Thanx from up :) Cheers! :)

  • im not jo sallins i wished hahahaha

i think he uses D'addario piccolo strings

    Gstring: 020

    Dstring: 032

    Astring: 042

    Estring: 052

here is the link they also ship

  • I'know who are U not ;)

    :D

    Thanx! :)

  • haha damn.... too good!

  • Woooo brill Skanx! cheered me up no ends thankyou ;-) . . . Phil

  • wow... really nice sound.
