What a talented douchbag. I know loving the band make you want to love Thom as a man and this is why you feel drawn to defend him. But deep down you know he's a douche.
What works about this interview is that most interviewers are the ones with the upper hand. They are usually straight forward, confidant and curious making the interviewee feel a bit interrogated. This can sometimes make the interviewee a bit taken aback by thier forwardness and close up or get annoyed by their questions.
This interviewer however seems to be so happy, blase and carefree that Thom feels as if he is ontop (no pun intended) and therefore comfortable.
Thom Yorke is such a person to admire. He's an intellectual as well as a damn amazing musician. He doesn't bullshit about his personal life in interviews like most people do these days. I say he's a gem.
Anyone who studies Art, whatever the medium, as well as its producers, the true artists, can't help but see a consistent quality of social difficulty. It is the price of artistic vision. We are not all created equal. Thom has a quality that sets him apart from the masses, and it gives him joy and pain simultaneously. Ezra Pound wrote,"The apparition of these faces in a crowd-- Petals on a wet, black bough." He's a part, and apart from the people he loves. Play on, Thom.
@srimecrime Jeff Buckley's influence on Radiohead is like Mike Patton's influence on nu metal : IT WASN'T HIS FAULT... and we can go on like this until the beguinings of music! :S
hey guys... i'm not English... can anybody explain me what he talks about when he talks about Blur, please? thanks. BTW: this is incredibly good interview
Thom is unfairly misunderstood, i believe a lot of interviewers piss him off, however this lady is a great interviewer thats why he is being a great interviewee
@rcomm400 You're so right about the thing with Thom being missunderstood. He talks about his family problems, his problems with the society etc. and she doesn't realise it. I hope, that I will put all my anger, fear and thoughts in good words and good notes to create music like thom. Music, which helps me inside.
@Miasatif Well, now we know you can use a thesaurus. I know you think it makes you look smart by being capable of using words that are not in the common vocabulary, but it doesn't. It makes you look like a smug bitch.
he's talking about HAIL TO THE THIEF. Which is funny because i didn't realize until far into the interview when he says it. Also funny because I think it's the only Radiohead album I haven't heard! Gonna get it now
@SultanAbsinth. Your comment is conflictual and illustrates that you are in some sort of discord. To vocally rebuke Thom Yorke as you have simply demonstrates your ineptitude in appreciating or having any redeemable conceptual analysis of what constitutes as good music. You must provide evidence for your statements and since Radiohead have, your comment is a bunch of shit mate.
he thinks like me... im scared how similar we think...but i just wish i had his music talent XD the world is frightening and i feel uncomphortable now...
I never got into Radiohead's music, but I am developping more and more of a man-crush on Thom Yorke each and every day. He's jsut an awesome guy, and interviewer is great, too. They both seem to be intelligent, and aware of their surroundings. It's bloody RARE to see that on TV nowadays.
thats not saying much considering Oasis and Starsailor suck. And yes they did try to copy Radiohead...for real those are a couple of the bands he is talking about, yet he never mentions them by name. It's one thing to be inspired...its another to be a complete rip off. Coldplay...eh...they have their moments...but I really tried to give "A Rush of Blood To the Head" a listen more than once...and they just flat out bore me.
"oh my god this is really awful, have i been responsible for this?" he must have been referring to Oasis, Starsailor, and Coldplay. If you are a fan of any of those bands thats okay but they do rip off Radiohead, its just a fact.
Well Coldplay is like 100 times better than oasis and Starsailor and they didn't copy Radiohead at all. I hate it when people compare the two, they are different in so many ways.
Anyone know who that interviewer is? I'd like to see her talk with some other artists. You can see here that all the talk about Thom being a dick in interviews is untrue...When the interviewer asks smart, relevant, questions he seems to really enjoy himself.
I like how at the end when she says that politics are sexy to her viewers, Thom glances straight into the camera for a moment, as if looking at them...
@jbag16023 I'd like to think so, but it sounds to me as though he's talking about the release of Hail To The Thief as something that's already happened. He'd already have written and named Backdrifts...

Lovely interview. And, as you have said, this is the kind of thing MTV is missing. They can't take the time to let us have a real listen for fear that the 13 yr. old emo-heads will become bored.
Thom is so damn adorable! I love how he's midway through a rant, then gets all self conscious probably thinking he's boring her and looks down mumbling about "politics not being very sexy". then the pleasantly bemused look on his face when she leans in and says "it is to my viewers". I think she definitely means herself. she clearly wants a piece of Thom.
I like how people pretend Jeff Buckley somehow made Thom magically sing better. First and foremost, this is no disrespect to Jeff Buckley as he was a great singer. But let's get our facts straight, Thom Yorke has been singing in falsetto for years, even before Jeff Buckleys records were out. Go search for the 1988 demos and you'll see Thom Yorke's incredible range even in those days. To Be A Brilliant Light is a good example.
She is a wonderful interviewer! I've never heard Thom open up like that. She was thoughtful with her questions and gave him plenty of room to express himself.

I'm truly impressed. I'd like to see her do more.
