Muay Thai is best for standing and striking, but when things go to the ground, jui jitsu prevails. Now the best and "proven" defense against blades, weapons, and being in hostage situations is Krav Magaw. So dont say thier aren martial arts that do njot prevail against specific attacks.
Brazilian Jujitsu is very effective against people that don't know how to fight. Even if they're stronger and bigger than you and you use brazilian jujitsu, you'll win like 100% of the time. However, against people who know how to fight and are stronger and bigger than you are, and you try to use brazilian jujitsu, they will kick the living shit out of you.
Jiu jitsu is the best martial art in a competition, fact. But in real life, whit no rules when someone can put their finger in your eyes or press another "eject" point, u will prefer a martial art like boxing, kickboxing or muay thai somenthing that will keep your oponent away from you

For all the 1v1 and 2v1 guys... simple fact: no one will attack you unless they think they have an advantage. Guys who want to fight train for the cage. Most guys on the street want to assault either for material gain or to feel tough. So look for that advantage. Size, strength, numbers or a weapon.

Thats true to an extent, the refs looked extreamly confused often. But still, there were some moments when royce knew that he should have let go and still didnt. Could have alot to do with the Shamrock fight tough.
The ground game is important to know! You can fight more than one person too. But you'll have to break there bones with fast hard submissions. Quick takedowns is needed on the streets. slamming someone in the pavement will KO or injure a person seriously.

lol, I do BJJ, Karate and Kickboxing, I agree that its good to be well rounded, but for self defense I would much rather be good at for example Boxing, or any other decent standup art. 80% of all fights I have seen have not been 1 on 1, the only fight I´ve gotten into was started 2 on 1, me being the one, as soon as they saw that they were not getting the better of it, they called for for their backup, another 10 guys. Thats when I decided that running is the best option.
I have trained in Martial Arts for 15yrs in BJJ and Karate, a nice mix i must add. I got into a fight once in the street, a car incident, but to make a long story short, I popped the guy's knee and he went down. This is after he trid to punch me. I told my Sensei about it and he asked me "What could u have done not to get into that fight?" My training took on new meaning, my respect for my teacher grew even more. Training means discipline, not aggression. A suspect message from Gracie I think.

I forgot the specific name for this martial art (or system), but two JKD guys did make a system of fighting where it teaches you how to fight multiple opponents. Or you can ask Marlon Sims for TUF5 =P.
Hugo Duarte was talking shit publicly about the Gracies [rickson] and was saying that the gracies would only fight standup fighters and not any Luta Livre fighters and that luta livre was better than gracie jujitsu. Hugo was a luta livre champ. So, Rickson simply put him in his place.
The smartest thing Gracie should have done was just simply walk away. Street fights like this are unpredictable. Unless he has a secret death wish, this Gracie can get shot by some crazy assailant. Fighting is not the solution. Humility and meekness is better than always having to prove you are better than others.
Great fighters don't patronize any one martial art. They are very open to learning other martial arts, especially those of their opponents. That's why Frank Shamrock and Matt Hughes are so good. Hughes called the Gracies outdated (before his fight with Royce) bec although bjj is very good martial system, Gracies still patronize just one martial art. Hughes is familiar with both bjj and also standup striking.

he didn't lost in the traditional sense, since the rule of that fight state that the moment one person's shoulder touch the ground he lost, so rickson's shoulder touch the ground and he lost but in all likelihood he would have put the ron tripp in an armbar eventually

For all the 1v1 and 2v1 guys... simple fact: no one will attack you unless they think they have an advantage. Guys who want to fight train for the cage. Most guys on the street want to assault either for material gain or to feel tough. So look for that advantage. Size, strength, numbers or a weapon.
Thank being said, Brazilian Jujitsu rocks.

still is, havent seen a fighter yet thats as small as him, and went Three rounds of non stop brawling of no RULES, remember Gracie vs Dan Severn, in Ultimate fighter 4 i believe, dude was almost twice his weight and had a strong discpline of roman wrestling... and still gracie took the Ultimate fighter win over and over,Now there all matched by weight, and size and height and theres rules , gloves etc..dont forget gracie doesnt talk shit, hes really quiet and calm... i admire that in any fighter

Thats true to an extent, the refs looked extreamly confused often. But still, there were some moments when royce knew that he should have let go and still didnt. Could have alot to do with the Shamrock fight tough.

The ground game is important to know! You can fight more than one person too. But you'll have to break there bones with fast hard submissions. Quick takedowns is needed on the streets. slamming someone in the pavement will KO or injure a person seriously.

not really. gang fights are for crypts and bloods or whatever. confrontation 9 out of 10 times is between two people. look at fights on youtube and tell me how many are 2 on 1. not as many as 1 on 1 i can tell you that. but if you want to refuse to learn bjj then thats your business but it is good to be well rounded. pussy

lol, I do BJJ, Karate and Kickboxing, I agree that its good to be well rounded, but for self defense I would much rather be good at for example Boxing, or any other decent standup art. 80% of all fights I have seen have not been 1 on 1, the only fight I´ve gotten into was started 2 on 1, me being the one, as soon as they saw that they were not getting the better of it, they called for for their backup, another 10 guys. Thats when I decided that running is the best option.

I have trained in Martial Arts for 15yrs in BJJ and Karate, a nice mix i must add. I got into a fight once in the street, a car incident, but to make a long story short, I popped the guy's knee and he went down. This is after he trid to punch me. I told my Sensei about it and he asked me "What could u have done not to get into that fight?" My training took on new meaning, my respect for my teacher grew even more. Training means discipline, not aggression. A suspect message from Gracie I think.

i'm tired of this argument. if you get jumped by 4 dudes you're best bet is too run. i don't know of many people, even pro mma guys, that could win a 4 on 1 fight. another thing to think about is there's no rules in street fighting as you said. i'm not going to sit here trying to submit someone, but i'd use jiu jitsu to hold someone down while i pounded them. have you ever rolled with anyone who actually trains BJJ? i bet you wouldn't make the "little man syndrome" to a shorter BJJ guy.

I give all credit to the gracie's but...The unpredictable reality of the street is getting stomped in the face by dudes homie while you roll around on the ground with him. It really is only effective in a one on one street fight where no one else gets involved. And thats not always case on the street. So saying its the the ulitmate self defense for real street fights seems a little silly to me.

In any fight today, people will do ANYTHING to win. This includes everything from getting friends to help to using a weapon. you're almost correct...but many forms of martial arts practice bunkai, breaking down the moves and techniques, finding other ways to apply them, which means even preparation for multiple opponents...to think that no form of martial arts prepares you for multiple opponents is rediculous

Hugo Duarte was talking shit publicly about the Gracies [rickson] and was saying that the gracies would only fight standup fighters and not any Luta Livre fighters and that luta livre was better than gracie jujitsu. Hugo was a luta livre champ. So, Rickson simply put him in his place.

The smartest thing Gracie should have done was just simply walk away. Street fights like this are unpredictable. Unless he has a secret death wish, this Gracie can get shot by some crazy assailant. Fighting is not the solution. Humility and meekness is better than always having to prove you are better than others.

Great fighters don't patronize any one martial art. They are very open to learning other martial arts, especially those of their opponents. That's why Frank Shamrock and Matt Hughes are so good. Hughes called the Gracies outdated (before his fight with Royce) bec although bjj is very good martial system, Gracies still patronize just one martial art. Hughes is familiar with both bjj and also standup striking.

It's true. But you have to give the Gracies and vale tudo artists their due as they took us from Karate and Kung Fu fantasy land to real mixed martial arts that actually work. People used to think kung fu monks could fly around and karate guys could kill with a word or chi. It was ridiculous.
