Why Stephanie meyer sold so many copies of this trash is because of 3 reasons. 1. Women do not like to settle. This is just making it harder for men. I guess you could say that Rowling is a good writer, but you cannot compare her to Shakespeare, Hugo or Cervantes. You cant even compare her to Tolkien. You can find some decent female writers throughout history, but theyll never achieve the brilliance of the authors I mentioned above

Yes, and back then women were not allowed to write. In the time of Shakespeare if a woman wrote anything, not only would no one publish anything for her, but she'd be openly mocked and perhaps throne out of her own home.

And as for other excellent female writers, what about Anna Bradstreet (renowned as one of America's best poets, but had to have her brother publish it because she was female)? Emily Dickinson? Kate Chopin? Virginia Woolf? Dawn Powell?Agatha Cristie? Cornelia Funke? I got more.

I guess its a matter of perspective. Personally I could give you many reasons why half of the writers you mentioned are just plain bad compared to most male writers. And even if back then women werent allowed to write books, nothing prevented them to shine in the XX century. And if you quote A. Christie and V. Woolf as the best competitors, I give you Hemingway,Camus, Sartre,Orwell,Remarque,J. Joyce,Márquez,Kafka,Proust,S.K­ing,Rushdie,Tolkien,Nabokov and many many more.

While I agree that Hugo and Tolkien are absolutely brilliant, there ARE female authors who can compete. George Eliot, Charlotte Brontë etc. are absolutely amazing. The reason most females did not write books like Les Misérables was because they were denied a proper education. And these days, I would say most women writers are better than the male writers.

I also read a good vampire book called "Embracing Darkness" that I got from the library. Now, though, I would like to purchase it, but, like avaster, I can't seem to find it with so many Twilight and Twiliight-like vampire stories. It's really quite sad... =(

1: I understand you hate the book, good for you!

2: I'd love you to write a best seller yourself. Show us how a "good" book is written.

3: Lord of the Rings Characters were also based off myths and legends... just like Satan. Gandalf = Merlin or Odin.
