Del Monaco had two dynamics - forte and fortissimo. The instrument, as pure muscle, was superior in every respect. That said, I'm sure no one would ever crown him the most nuanced or subtle of all tenors. But dear heaven what a set of pipes...
@RichieLeone You are totally correct! In Otello and elsewhere he COULD (at times) show that he had piano and even softer. What a pity (as you suggest) that he did not use his brain too often - certainly in concerts! I saw him live many times and the "set of pipes" made one forget; it is just that when one heard him live you could be drunk with the sheer volume and presence. And it made one think everything was possible, that life was sheer visceral passion - wrong of course...
With all due respect, I disagree. Mario was not the most subtle tenor, for sure, but neither was he entirely lacking in subtlety. Both on the stage and on in the studio he could and often did sing way below forte. Besides, there is a good deal of repertoire (Canio, Turidu, Chenier, Otello, Manrico, Alvaro, Radames, even Cavaradossi) where passion is more than adequate substitue for a certain lack of subtlety.

Del Monaco was bigger than life! I know, I was paid $1 as a super to carry a banner across the stage in Pagliacci with Del Monaco as Canio. I love Björling. I love Del Monaco because he loved Björling, once called him "Il Commendatore." And, perhaps most of all, I love Del Monaco because of the love and joy with which he sang. It was out there! is this not what is meant by "dramatic tenor"? I'm not up to speed on these classifications, but if this is not dramatic tenor, what is?!!
i have to agree size is not everything, i prefer beauty of tone and the other musical aspects like phrasing, legato etc. which is why i prefer pavarotti to all others as he is superior in these other aspects imo than pretty much anyone else. however beauty of tone is in the ear of the listener. no one can tell me caruso had a better voice or more beautiful sound than pavarotti did because #1 you cannot tell from the recordings and recordings are all we have now days.
@bigus I kind of agree with your statement, but it's important to note that many tenors have stated or intimated that Caruso was the greatest tenor ever.Caruso was also the stepping stone & foundation for all tenors that followed him because of his original interpretations,legato,range,size&beauty of voice etc.My favorites are Del Monaco,Corelli,Di Stefano,Volpi&Lanza depending ofcourse on what they are singing.I do listen&enjoythem more than Caruso& it's possibly because of inferior recording

I think he was the last link to the yesteryear tenors whom were so great.I feel Pavarotti also helped make opera more popular and fun for the average person.Pavarotti was very humble&complimentary when speaking of other artists like Tucker Bjorling Bocelli & even pop singers.Not only was Pavarotti a great tenor,but he also had a surprizing charisma that capivated both opera&pop audiences throughout the world.Enjoy

A perfect technique - but to achieve what MDM did you also need musical sensibility, talent, and amazing vocal cords. The greatest of all recorded tenors!

As far as being the greatest recorded tenor that's very debatable. Corelli, Bonisolli, Caruso, Bjorling and the list go's on Tucker, Di Stefano etc..FYI Corelli was voted Tenor of the Century

@Etnalleb im sure tucker had a good voice i just find his production ugly. i believe everyone has a great voice (unless of course its ruined beyond repair), but some are freer and produced purer than others which is why we find certain voices more appealing. i believe the technical production of the instrument makes or breaks the actual beauty of it, but everyones God given voice has the potential to be just as beautiful as the next if produced properly, even though the timbres are different.
@bigus I never really considered Tucker's voice "ugly". It is well produced, his diction is great and he rarely ever pushed it beyond what it could do. No, it did not have the "honey" to it that Bjorling or Gigli had but then again they were very rare animals indeed.

@FERMAT0123 Bonisolli and Tucker had just as big as Voice as MDM and let's not forget Enrico Caruso who MDM himself said was the greatest Tenor of all. James McCracken is the only tenor i know who dwarfed all other tenors as far as sheer depth and volume and biggest voice . Jon Vickers , Jess Thomas , James KIng all had as big a voice as MDM but they lacked the passion and Bravado that made MDM so great.
@Etnalleb I am sorry to disagree with you..from experience. MDM's voice was much bigger than the people you mentioned. About Caruso? His was the most beautiful. I sang with McCracken and he was not as big at Vickers by a long shot. My mentor was Jerome Hines and he said that MDM had the biggest voice by far that anybody had ever heard. But size is not everything. :)

I love Corelli too, but find this impression of your teacher hard to believe. Several of my teachers heard or knew Flagstad and I have listened to their descriptions of the "black velvet" or being enveloped in a great resounding bell or encompassed by an unimagineable sound - that have mainly made me sorry to be born too late to experience this! Thank God for recordings, even if we must complement what we miss with our imagination. And hope for a new generation of singers ...
I love Pavarotti and we sure miss him,but del Monaco remains the most glorious voice and so passionate, full throarted ,exciting singing.Corelli used to say to me that he was in awe of the great Mario. He liked Pavarotti but thought that Domingo was incredibly overrated and not a worthy heir to himself and del Monaco in the spinto roles.
